The IOC are now playing fair. It's other sports orgs that are the concern.

GriseldaandMike · 30/03/2026 18:43

Gosh why can't the IOC just be kiinnnnddd and ask people who want to complete as women if they like pink and if they have a twirly skirt? That way those are the very bestest at womaning will be in and any rubbish women who don't like laydee things will be out and so they won't offend the sensitive ones with lady feelings with a lack of lipstick or wearing of trousers. That will go a huge way to knocking the stereotypes on the head.

Thanks for clarification.

So athletes will be tested to get the biological evidence of whether they are male or female.

Yes, of course. What else could the purpose of this test be?

IwantToRetire · 30/03/2026 18:27

ErrolTheDragon · 30/03/2026 11:54

The test will show that they are males and so can no longer unfairly compete as females despite having their sex misidentified in infancy and therefore in some cases ‘raised as girls’.

But whereas these males could unfairly beat elite women they have no more athletic prowess than any other man, and doubtless in some cases less. Well, so what? There are many genetic/developmental factors which mean an individual will never be an elite athlete! Peoples thinking has become clouded because the misidentification ever allowed males with DSDs to compete as females.

As usual they go with the big lie that transgender people are subject to a blanket ban.

The IOC’s new guidelines, announced on Friday, mandate genetic sex tests for all athletes competing in its women’s categories, as well as blanket bans of people who identify as transgender, intersex or with sex differences.

This comes out every time single-sex spaces or sports are discussed. Even Sean Ingle's article doesn't get this right, saying:

The International Olympic Committee has banned transgender women and DSD athletes from the female category of events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and future Games.

I'm assuming that female athletes with DSDs are not actually banned from the female category. I usually assume that this kind of statement is deliberate misinformation, but I think in Ingle's article it may be because a slip.

This Telegraph article does it too, starting with the headline: Olympics announces transgender ban in all women’s sport Exclusive: Ruling will also prohibit women with differences in sexual development, and going on to refer to The blanket ban on transgender and intersex competitors in women’s sport

Individuals with 5-ard and pais will be excluded from elite gender-affected sport because they won't be good enough to compete in the male/open class but can't safely or fairly be included in the female class.

I dont understand. Are you saying that these conditions mean that the SRY gene test (I think it is called) would be inconclusive and not be able to say someone was biologically male or female?

Or have the Y chromosome athletes compete as men. Simples.

Hard agree. Not ‘or’, but ‘and’

ie, anyone with a Y chromosome is banned from women’s sport and is able to compete in men’s sport

Personally I think we have a good case for 5ard and pais sportsmen to have a category at the Paralympics which they'll have a hissy fit at the prospect of for various reasons. Some of them pretty discriminatory.

However the point remains that disabled athletes are extremely unlikely to ever make it to the Olympics but no one has a shit fit about this.

WittyLimeBiscuit · 29/03/2026 11:06

Dragonasaurus · 27/03/2026 09:45

How about anyone with a Y chromosome is banned from women’s elite sports. Is that simpler and easier to understand? Yes there are some males with a DSD who don’t have the same attributes as other males. Unfortunately that means that, as a result of their genetic code, they will never be able to be elite athletes. That also applies to the vast, vast majority of the population - a point which seems rather lost as some people whine about inclusion. The Olympics isn’t an inclusive event.

Sharron Davies said that women’s sport currently receives 5% of total sports funding - but female athletes are still expected to share that with some men who aren’t good enough to compete in the men’s events?

Or have the Y chromosome athletes compete as men. Simples.

I happened to watch what used to be the Paper review or some such name on Sky tv. Its now called the Wrap.

In fact the night before when it was already known that the Olympics were going to return to women only and whoever the commentators were just said well of course and they moved on the the next item

Last night they had Shami Chakrabarti, formally Liberty and now a Baroness.

She just went on and on about how this was discrageful discrimination against a fragile minority. ie meaning women dont have rights but should give them up for this tiny minority.

Then she launched into a whole thing about how the testing wasn't fair because not everyone was one sex or the other. How was this fair on them. they wouldn't able to compete at all.

I only going into the detail because of course in terms of the public she is seen as being part of campaigning for human rights, and is now in the House of Lords where she is "respected" for her time at Liberty.

The fact that she was talking total rubbish was not challenged.

I dont know if this is the right link but it illustrates just how the rainbow fantasy of what biological sex is, is still being promoted by well known people.

She's right, but draws the wrong conclusions. Individuals with 5-ard and pais will be excluded from elite gender-affected sport because they won't be good enough to compete in the male/open class but can't safely or fairly be included in the female class. Some problems don't have solutions.

There's no issue for trans people though. They can compete in their own sex class. If they count themselves out by taking drugs that affect their performance that's their lookout.

If you want to know the position some very senior people at the UN have on this matter, Alexandra Xanthaki, Special Rapporteur, was interviewed on Radio 4 last night, from about 9 minutes 40 seconds:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002t2w6

It was even worse than you might have imagined.

She sounds like a complete idiot. Also a liar, saying women don't want this (apparently because TWAW and they don't want it).

Sharron Davies is on afterwards. Very nice clear explanation of what female athletes want and why.

EasternStandard · 28/03/2026 08:20

Yep the men and misogynists will try to create backlash.

Women are getting somewhere, it’s important.

AsTreesWalking · 28/03/2026 07:53

I would love to hear Alexandra Xanthaki describe an olympic sport that is played not with the outrageously discriminatory and excluding body, but with all those really important things that make a woman - like feelings, identity, or choice
sarcasm alert

Dear God I have just listened to this. How Sharon didn’t get even more shouty I will never know! And what the fuck was that UN woman wanging on about re: this means women can no longer decide what makes them a woman because the IOC has determined it is just biology.

Right so apart from every cell in my body making me a woman, the other things are what, my hair, clothes, hobbies?? So a bunch of culture stereotypes and norms that everyone says are terrible and we should dismantle. So it can’t be that then, surely that determines what a woman is?

So what does make me a woman I wonder 🧐

As several UN independent experts have noted, binary definitions of sex reinforce harmful stereotypes and erode progress toward substantive gender equality.

How does recognising that there are only two sexes reinforce stereotypes? I want journalists to start asking these experts to explain what they mean when they say this kind of stuff.

Why bother having sex categories in sport at all? This has nothing to do with gender or stereotypes, if you are going to have women’s and men’s categories, the line needs to be drawn, and the decider is biological sex.

Rightsraptor · 27/03/2026 19:30

As Naomi Cunningham said in a recent article, this stuff is only complex if youre trying to think up reasons as to how it's all wrong. We on our side find it all very simple.

This! For me, an unexpected effect of peaking (over a previous Olympics, as it happened) was that I could stop trying to tie myself in knots trying to reconcile this growing ideology which had taken hold in my newspaper (I'm an ex Guardian subscriber), my workplace and my social circle with the biology and sociology that had been the basis of my education and my career and just file the whole fucking lot under "bullshit" and go back to basics. This stuff is fascinating around the edges, but fundamentally it's not at all complex.

I too thought that Brunel professor was a complete and utter loon. Yet look at her profile and it looks so worthwhile - working with refugees (do they just identify out of their problems?). Thank heavens Sharon Davis came along before I morphed into Nigel Farage and defunded everything.

popery · 27/03/2026 19:09

Being faster than another person is a binary judgement based on things like "measurable speed" rather than "how fast someone would dearly like to go".

It's exclusionary and literally judges people who are slower merely due to how their body moves.

We should absolutely move away from such binary measures and to a model that rewards anyone who feels fast. And that can mean whatever you want it to mean! That's how inclusivity works.

I bet they aren’t really independent. Perhaps a few journalists can test whether that claim is true, or is just identifying as being true.

OMFG that is unreal. Just when I thought I was going to start breaking things, Sharon Davis comes in, clearly enormously frustrated but sane and made me feel better. The questions SD was asked were so bloody predictable as well, delighted she dealt with them so effectively. Why was she asked if she felt sorry for trans athletes and the TRA from the UN was not asked if she felt sorry for the female athletes who do not want to compete with men!!!
Im going to have to step away from the internet for a while to calm down now.
