More children in the UK have an iPhone than a father living in the home.

Oh man. This story was the headline on the lunchtime news, but I (looked for it but) didn't see it on the evening news. And I thought - this is stuff I see on Mumsnet, there was a woman posting just last year saying how frightened she was of her teenage son, out late, skipping school, involved with drugs. Losing his temper with her constantly.

I think a few of you are reading a lot into the father’s ‘absence’ here. Ms Shellis had moved away from the area they’d been living together as a family - quite a long way away.

We don’t know why the relationship broke down and we don’t know yet if the father was trying to stay in contact. He could have been an utter shit who didn’t give a toss about his two lads, or he could have been trying to stay involved - it’s way too easy to read too much into the very little detail that the reports so far give.

And so sad for the mothers who had to be mother, father and everything in between.

I think that we need to have the chat about having a dad.

Many of us do not want to address that - but we need to.

Too many children are raised without one.

More children in the UK have an iPhone than a father living in the home.

This poor woman - left to deal with all of that on her own.

And she knew what was coming. Her diary entries show that she could sense it.

I could weep for her.

I felt there was a lot missing from the reporting. Where was the father? Why was nothing doing when the Mum flagged serious concerns about her sons mental health ? A family let down totally by various services yet again. And a loving mother who did her best but in the end her son made a terrible and evil decision. It’s heartbreaking.
Also the dangers of the online world - especially Discord, and the lack of any real mental health support in the Uk currently. Sadly I think there will be more cases like this. Also what did this murderer think was going to happen? All signs clearly pointed to him and other than a hatred (without a clear basis as she seems to have really tried to help him) of his mother there seems to be no actual motive. A horrible and senseless crime.

I think these is also the issue that many, not just because of lack of NHS resources, children and young teenagers with various conditions are said to be better to be allowed to continue to live at home.

But more often that not that means the mother becomes not just the carer as a mother but also some sort of substitute for professional care.

I dont know the balance, but also its is unacceptable that these women who have had this additional "duty" put on them, are then brutally murdered.

... In a victim impact statement, Angela’s eldest son Ethan said his mum was “the most important person in my life. We talked every day.”

He said “all my mum ever did was love Tristan. He’s the one who took her from us all.” ...

Just awful - so many parents, and particularly lone mothers, are just expected to cope with violent males in their house because they are their children. One of the hidden statistics is that, until 2022 at least, child-to-parent violence was included in domestic violence stats for ONS and was one of the reasons the male victim rate was elevated.

Services only step in when things have already hit crisis point, and even then will sign off someone who is clearly unstable because they choose not to engage. This is a boy who was already known to courts - how many "lessons will be learned" are we going to hear this time?

I see so many posts on MN where mums appear to be scared of their sons.

It is horrific. Evidently a major dangerous influence on this son was the internet.

He used the online forum “Discord” for several hours a day and laid out his plans to fellow users.

She never gave up on him.

Interesting though, never once was the a mention of the absent father.

Had the mother been absent?

They get a complete pass - these men who walk away from their responsibility and leave everything to the woman.
