John Davison BAFTA Tourette’s incident and competing rights

It’s interesting how this is being discussed atm. I see Ash Sarkar has framed it as an example of competing rights between disabled people and victims of racism, forgetting about intersectionality. But there is a struggle from those on the extreme left to see how women’s rights are compromised by ceding to TRAs.

not expressing myself very well but thought it had some interesting parallels with the sex and gender debate.

Breaking news: White person thinks someone involuntarily calling black people the n word is HILARIOUS.

Hm.

I think any neurotypical person who is so massively offended by a word uttered by someone with a neurological condition they had no control over that they’d self exclude from something they’d enjoy is a bit wet. So I guess I’d judge them.

Edited

I specifically said, "because they know they are sensitive to being triggered by a slur or shouted insult" so not, not 'massively offended', but triggered due to their own trauma or private issues.

And why would you judge them for self-excluding? It feels like you're trying to set up a situation where people will be judged just as much for taking responsibility for themselves and their own feelings, and removing themselves from the situation rather than trying to exclude Davidson, and I'm not sure why?

They weren’t personally called N’s. He tic-ed. That’s what people aren’t getting. Over and over.

It’s so frustrating, isn’t it?

MBJ and DL’s feelings in this situation and how they’ve been dismissed.

They're grown men, they can't take it on the chin when they know that it's an involuntary tic. Not many people got away with telling the Queen to 'fuck' and she didn't turn a hair.

The more I think about it, the more inane this 'if the Queen smiled and nodded and didn't get upset, nobody should' argument is. The Queen's USP was literally keeping a stiff upper lip and never showing upset or discomfort about anything. She'd have done that if anyone had said the same to her. 'Famously non reacting woman didn't react' isn't the win people think it is!

OtterlyAstounding · 24/02/2026 21:44

Well, I just winced again.

I'm not sure it's really a white person's place to be laughing about how two black people were called n--rs on international television. Or using rap/hip hop as an excuse to say it.

There have been plenty of people saying he should either not have been invited or should have been segregated in case he offended someone. Its clear that some think DEI is just for black people.

I think this is terrible. He has a disability. End of story. The fact some people don't want to understand it or are unable to do so and they're making it about themselves with the undertone of blaming him for his disability is frankly disgusting.

You’re gonna get really angry and wince when you hear what NWA stands for 😇

absolutely banging album BTW.

and why does the colour of my skin have ANYTHING to do with this?

NewYearSameMe16 · 24/02/2026 21:38

I don’t use the word and would prefer if it wasn’t used in rap, mainly to avoid situations like this where its usage is then used against black people. There’s a whole history around the reclamation of the word (similar to the F word in gay culture) which I don’t have time to go into but feel free to google it if you are interested.

I also never said it was unacceptable in relation to it being a tic; my point is around acknowledgment of MBJ and DL’s feelings in this situation and how they’ve been dismissed.

So you are saying that in some contexts it is not offensive because the reclamation of the word means that people understand that there is no ill intent.

But in this situation it is offensive even though people understand that there is no ill intent because it is an involuntary tic.

That doesn't really make sense.

OtterlyAstounding · 24/02/2026 21:40

I'm not talking about Jamie Foxx.

I'm saying if any person invited to the BAFTAs were to self-exclude, politely and good-naturedly, because they know they are sensitive to being triggered by a slur or shouted insult and would rather avoid the possibility, would you judge them negatively? And if so, why?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/02/2026 21:43

I can understand them being bewildered if they weren’t warned, but surely once the situation was made clear, they’re big enough and old enough to get over it?

I was genuinely waiting for a gracious comment from them along the lines of understanding that John had a disability and letting this be an awareness-raising moment.

One million percent.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/02/2026 21:45

I think the US has an issue with ableism (along with all its other fucking issues) and this has just highlighted it.

So if it doesn't bother you it shouldn't bother anyone?

Impact matters

What part of ‘the feelings of two black men who were called a slur on global TV should be acknowledged’ are you having trouble with? My POV is nothing to do with John Davidson’s condition but all about the comments that MBJ and DL are millionaire snowflakes who should get over it.

They weren't 'called it'. They heard a person with tourettes, exhibiting tourettes.

They need to get over themselves.

aileme · 24/02/2026 21:41

It was really unfortunate but he has Tourette's that's what happens. He was excited and so his tics were particularly noticeable. He literally couldn't help it and he's apologised obviously mortified what else can he do, hide under a rock the rest of his life. That doesn't seem fair at all. I'm sure most people have empathy for what he must be going though now and what he lives with day to day.

OtterlyAstounding · 24/02/2026 21:40

DamsonGoldfinch · 24/02/2026 21:37

In this case? Yes. Because it’s a word that in Jamie Foxx’s case he’s had shouted at him repeatedly when he’s acting. He isn’t ’triggered’. He’s saying that his ethnicity trumps Davidson’s disability.

Can you explain why it's acceptable in the context of music but not in the context of an involuntary tic?

OtterlyAstounding · 24/02/2026 21:21

Out of curiosity - if someone did self-exclude, without any fuss or complaining, because they didn't want to risk having something shouted at them (perhaps they know they have certain sensitivities or triggers, and don't want to risk being triggered), would you judge them for that and say that they should act like grown ups?

In this case? Yes. Because it’s a word that in Jamie Foxx’s case he’s had shouted at him repeatedly when he’s acting. He isn’t ’triggered’. He’s saying that his ethnicity trumps Davidson’s disability.

nicepotoftea · 24/02/2026 21:31

Do many people watch the BAFTAs in a normal year? I'm surprised that anyone outside the UK has much awareness of what they are.

No, and awards shows in general now. Always a virtue signalling speech horned in and when it’s BAFTA a British actor always get it no matter who the nominees are. For once I thought Robert Aramayo deserved it though.

Please tell me you're black.

(Personally, no, I winced rather than laughing.)
