John Davison BAFTA Tourette’s incident and competing rights

It’s interesting how this is being discussed atm. I see Ash Sarkar has framed it as an example of competing rights between disabled people and victims of racism, forgetting about intersectionality. But there is a struggle from those on the extreme left to see how women’s rights are compromised by ceding to TRAs.

not expressing myself very well but thought it had some interesting parallels with the sex and gender debate.

Show me where I say JD saying the N due to an involuntary tic is offensive? I said MBJ and DL experiencing this live in front of millions would’ve been upsetting and their feelings should be acknowledged. I don’t think the correct duty of care was carried out in JD’s case either so they were all let down.

Experiencing somebody with Tourette's live?

You still haven't explained why it is tolerable in one context, but not another.

ETA: and as far as I can see their feelings were acknowledged

I never said that though. I’m bothered about intent. I know I’m being facetious here but it’s like cunt, you can say it and mean it really offensively, or you can mean it like ‘he’s a good cunt’ between peers.

There was no malicious intent in John Davidson’s tic. The damage to him is going to be far greater than to Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo because of this ignorance of Tourette’s.

I understand that his involuntary tics mean that he shouted the n word at them, without wanting to.

I do get that.

But I certainly don't think it is the place of a white person to be either laughing at the situation, or saying 'well, it's in rap music anyway, so why do they care?' There's a difference between 'He didn't mean it that way and couldn't help it, so people should be understanding,' and 'Oh, it's funny and the n word isn't a big deal anyway, get over it!'

I have no time for anyone who uses the word triggered I’m afraid.

Couldn’t have put this any better.

You could still try. There’s quite a lot of room above it….

So why should someone with triggers, perhaps due to autism, past trauma, or other conditions or issues, who knows they may be triggered, be judged for choosing to not go to an awards show?

They're not blaming him, they're not trying to exclude him, they're just aware of their own limitations, and don't want to be set off/triggered/distressed, and you're telling me that they'd be doing something wrong, and deserve judgement?

It feels like there's literally no winning.

JFC.

He should be free to attend.

All people who witnessed it should be mature enough to understand his limitations and not be offended instead of making his illness about themselves, running to the press and announcing they're quitting. What an absolute palaver, totally inappropriate, ableist behaviour.

The fact so many people don't want to understand Tourette's very frequently makes people say the exact wrong thing at moments of high anxiety and they'd rather victimise themselves and seek attention is honestly depressing.

That’s not racism. It’s a question.

im sorry you can’t do rational thinking.

but please, don’t call me racist.

Well, Reddit should know, I guess!

I'd be confident without knowing anything else about you that I know more about the base rules of comedy than you. But let's not discuss it further. Greater awareness of your views on anything isn't enhancing my life.

Name me a slur he could’ve called an able bodied, straight, Christian/non-religious white man that’s on par with the N word and would’ve caused hurt and humiliation to the people presenting and global outrage? I’ll wait…

It’s still the funniest thing I’ve seen this week.

Man with Tourette’s does massive swear on live TV and everyone falls over themselves. Perfection.

I mean world war three is due to start next weekend when America sets two carrier strike groups and the whole of Israel
on Iran but don’t worry, a silly man sad a bad word on the tv.

it’s utterly hilarious.

NewYearSameMe16 · 24/02/2026 21:58

nicepotoftea · 24/02/2026 21:46

So you are saying that in some contexts it is not offensive because the reclamation of the word means that people understand that there is no ill intent.

But in this situation it is offensive even though people understand that there is no ill intent because it is an involuntary tic.

That doesn't really make sense.

It’s hilarious based on everyone I’ve spoken to about it. And Im tempted to say it’s objectively funny on the base rules of comedy to be perfectly honest but I won’t.

I don’t use the word and would prefer if it wasn’t used in rap, mainly to avoid situations like this where its usage is then used against black people. There’s a whole history around the reclamation of the word (similar to the F word in gay culture) which I don’t have time to go into but feel free to google it if you are interested.

I also never said it was unacceptable in relation to it being a tic; my point is around acknowledgment of MBJ and DL’s feelings in this situation and how they’ve been dismissed.

Some years ago a rapper invited a white girl up on stage to perform his rap,
He then got offended when she rapped the N word and turned the audience against her.
If he was that bothered he shouldn't have chosen a white person.

I bring this up as it seemed performative to me as does much of the offense that has been taken.

And as much as I have empathy and sympathy for those involved (JD, DL, MBJ) in this. I am more disappointed in the arty types (baftas, artists. actors media, bbc) that have spent so long preacching DEI, inclusion and be kind yet are slating this man and doing the exact opposite of what they are preaching.

Because they have no reason to be 'offended' or to 'manage their emotions' or to 'remove themselves'

A person with Tourette's blurted out a word they shouldn't. It's a complete non-story, it's Tourette's. People present around him knew he has Tourette's. It was then explained over and over afterwards.

Do people get offended when a severely autistic person in a supermarket makes loud noises too? No. Because that would be deeply inappropriate, unwarranted and, indeed, offensive. There's virtually ZERO difference.

How dark does someone’s skin have to be in order for it to be ok for them to laugh at this exactly? Can you give a number? I look Greek for example that’s quite dark compared to someone from Scotland.

The more I think about it, the more inane this 'if the Queen smiled and nodded and didn't get upset, nobody should' argument is. The Queen's USP was literally keeping a stiff upper lip and never showing upset or discomfort about anything. She'd have done that if anyone had said the same to her. 'Famously non reacting woman didn't react' isn't the win people think it is!

I see it more as to the people who are implying that he’s selective with his tics, that he knows what he’s doing, the implication that he’s ‘knowingly’ been racist (this is going on on the other thread at the moment) when he’s also tic-ed offensively at the Queen. The Queen! It’s to show these tics don’t discriminate. Yes she has a stiff upper lip but she wasn’t a shrinking violet by any means.

They weren’t personally called N’s. He tic-ed. That’s what people aren’t getting. Over and over.

I specifically said, "because they know they are sensitive to being triggered by a slur or shouted insult" so not, not 'massively offended', but triggered due to their own trauma or private issues.

And why would you judge them for self-excluding? It feels like you're trying to set up a situation where people will be judged just as much for taking responsibility for themselves and their own feelings, and removing themselves from the situation rather than trying to exclude Davidson, and I'm not sure why?

Breaking news: White person thinks someone involuntarily calling black people the n word is HILARIOUS.

Hm.

Yes.

literally yes.

the funniest thing I’ve seen in a week and I really do look out for laughs.

I regularly drive around playing Straight Outta Compton with my windows down, last black guy who heard me came to give me a fist bump.

It’s so frustrating, isn’t it?

What you’re both not getting is that the tic was triggered by seeing two black men (and the other black people he said it to that night), he didn’t shout the N word at white people. It’s involuntary and he didn’t mean it but context is also relevant.
