“Heated Rivalry” author Rachel Reid on J. K. Rowling - “the bar is pretty high in how evil you have to be,” “ I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes”

Well, this is disappointing.

”[Reid] has a keen desire not to disappoint her fans, especially when they’re sending her photos of freshly inked tattoos of her words on their skin. ‘I know of another author that a lot of people got tattoos of but then wanted them gone. Like, J. K. Rowling,’ she says. ‘The bar is pretty high for how evil you have to be, but I don’t want to let a single person down.’ I ask if she’s a TERF. ‘No, I’m extremely the opposite of everything she believes,’ she replies.”

Well, too late, she let me down. “Extremely the opposite of everything she believes,” huh? I guess Rachel Reid thinks teenage girls should be forced to undress after PE in front of naked male classmates who gawp as their dicks get hard. Or that female inmates should be locked in cells with male inmates serving time for serial rape.

I don’t expect Reid to agree with Rowling on trans issues. It’s the monstering of Rowling that I take issue with - the “evil,” and the framing of Rowling as so extreme that Reid feels the need to be extremely the opposite of everything she believes.

Edit: title should read “on how evil you have to be”

You speak on behalf of sex realists. Sex realism is largely backed by US right wing christian conservative men. It is a globally-focused effort to reduce the rights of LGBT people and eventually return culture to align with its core biblical belief that women are subservient to men.

That is your belief. But it's WRONG. Gender Critical feminism is overwhelmingly backed by left wing feminists globally. It's the T that is largely backed by the far right Mens Rights Movement, and their goal, as is yours, to reduce the rights of women and LGB people.

No, it's fact.

This is already covered by discrimination law.

Similarly you can suffer discrimination on the grounds of religion because somebody thinks you are a particular religion regardless of whether their assumption is correct.

It does not therefore follow that you are that religion.

Yes, fully agree! And it doesn’t mean, for example, that white people with a tan can start self-defining as BAME because they might be mistaken for a member of an ethnic minority from a distance, at night, by someone short-sighted.

The normal men I see throughout my day sure aren't obsessing about my potential gametes as we interact.

Oh my. There is a reason for that.

Yes, you can be discriminated against because you are the charateristic, or because someone assumes you are the characteristic. We can all be discriminated against probably all of the categories, except men are rarely discriminated against for pregnancy.

Catabogus · 27/02/2026 17:35

Quite. I can well believe transwomen might get some of the same discrimination if people genuinely can’t tell that they’re not women. But that would - presumably - apply to very few transwomen, and depend entirely on “passing”?

Men as a class are very unlike trans women as a class. Sex realist belief doesn't change this.

There are lots of different type of men.

They are all men.

I've never had to consider the impact of pregnancy as a male, either. Biological children were just never going to be a thing in my life.

Most men never consider the impact of pregnancy, so not very female gendered there.

Sex descrimination is social. It is gender-based. It is class focused. Discrimination is not based on the knowledge of one person's gametes by another, it is focused at people grouped by the presumption of sex.

Edited

Sex discrimination is sex based.

The clue is in the name.

Yes, as with any other form of discrimination, discrimination by perception is also illegal.

Gender means assumptions of how a man or woman should behave, so sexist expectations. Gender non conforming women don't gain male privilege and avoid sexism.

Catabogus · 27/02/2026 17:35

Coatsoff42 · 27/02/2026 17:34

I know is it the presumption of sex, or the presumption of gender?

Catabogus · 27/02/2026 17:28

This is confusing me. You are saying that discrimination is on the basis of presumed sex? So transwomen are discriminated against because the person/group doing the discrimination can’t tell they’re not biologically woman (and if they can tell that, then they won’t subject them to the same discrimination?)?

I had thought you were saying discrimination was on the basis of gender, which could be divorced from sex. But seems I am wrong. Confused

Please tell me how the any of the above influences interpersonal day to day social interactions between people in the workplace, transit or shops?

Pregnancy massively influences interpersonal interaction in public transport, shops and the workplace. All sorts of people come up and start giving unsolicited advice like “you shouldn’t be drinking Coca Cola - think of the baby!” and either offering you a seat on the tube or studiously avoiding your eye in case they have to give you a seat. Colleagues make jokes about “baby brain”.

Menopause also influences these interactions, especially with unexpected flooding and public embarrassment and the need for a decent (single sex!) loo urgently. Also suddenly becoming somewhat invisible to men in public (this one is a mixed blessing). Oh and colleagues making the odd unnecessary joke when you insist on opening the office window.

Did you really think these things don’t influence women’s social interactions?!

I've discussed this in previous threads. My rapists were brought to trial after several more attacks. Men were not targeted. Multiple sex realists on mumsnet need to turn this crime into a crime against men. Good f*&king luck with that.

That does not change the fact that the risk of pregnancy means that rape is different for men and women.

midgetastic · 27/02/2026 17:21

Men raping men is not at all unheard of
I really don’t understand the link to transgender?

I am sorry that you were raped, but, given that we are talking bluntly, that does not stop me from saying that the experience of rape is different for a man and a woman.

As already discussed, sex discrimination is generally unlawful, so nobody should be treating anyone differently because of their sex.

However, lack of provision of facilities for women who are menstruating/breastfeeding/pregnant - anything sex specific - could lead to a claim of unlawful sex discrimination.

but unlike a woman, any choice to avoid pregnancy did not depend on access to contraception and abortion.

I'm sorry to hear you were abused. Trans people aren't responsible for the conduct of men.

Yes, I'm aware. I thought my post made that clear.

Sadly though, the allowance of transwomen in so called fenland spaces make it easier for abusers to go undetected.

No but one man is much like another and transpeople are present in the prison population for sexual offences at a rate greater than that of men in general
