I had just finished reading Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce when the Pelicot case hit the headlines and I wondered at the time what Harriet had come across to inspire the drug rape part of the story. I assumed there was a story or stories circulating in legal circles that hadn't hit the news yet.

I think it may have been the rape of the Sabines, and the rapists in that story were Romans. But the rape wasn't the sort we think of now; it was abduction for the purpose of marriage so the Romans wouldn't die out. I don't know whether that makes it better or worse.

It isn't appropriate to refer to these predators as men, they do not deserve to be called Homo Sapiens, but a subset, Homo Rapist (don't know the Latin for that, the story about the woman who an early Roman raped wasn't in book one) and to have relinquished their claim to human rights. Steal another's rights, lose your own. Become an Unman, not, as I suspect they think, an Uberman.

Her mother is trying to get the men who raped her prosecuted. I hope she succeeds. They should, imo, be charged with manslaughter too.

This is perhaps me being a bit petty but calling the task force after Medusa, who in some versions of her myth was transformed into a monster after being raped, is a bit off. Although in some tellings the heroic Perseus beheaded her (pregnant with her rapist's child) while she was sleeping. I think Hydra would have been a better name. It's just a detail though. At least they're trying to do something.

There's an international task force - only including 9 countries so far. It was set up in April this year. By July it was investigating 113 cases.

I really don’t know how we stop it. I genuinely believe that there are many men who will do terrible things to women if they think they’ll get away with it. How do we protect ourselves against the people we trust the most? It is absolutely horrifying.

I suspect it's getting worse. For a start, the internet has made it much easier for men to find other men who want to do this. It's probably made it easier for them to get hold of drugs.

On the other hand, grooming gangs predate the internet.

This is absolutely horrific, there are no words for it. How many of these sickos are out there and how do we stop them? Is it getting worse or just more reported? That poor woman, and her daughter.

I really do despair of men in general. I reckon the majority of men, yours, mine, anybody's if given the opportunity with anonymity guaranteed would do the same. The perpetrators that are known about are, after all just ordinary men with lives, lifestyles, jobs and in many cases partners and families. Just ordinary.

And if we are asked who are the most dangerous people in the world at the moment, well..... the first names to come to mind are all leaders of various countries, and all men, of course.

I suspect it's just the tip of the iceberg. My godson was a victim of the Manchester rapist - and only found out when the police contacted him. He fortunately didn't have to go to trial but there were hundreds more victims who weren't traced.

Gosh, those poor women.

He had three earlier convictions relating to abuse of women, then was given four life sentences in 2000, yet somehow he was released after only 13 years .

Filing this under ‘disappointed but not surprised’. A frightening percentage of men are utterly vile, I know it’s ‘not all men’, but the fact that there’s any is unacceptable.

Thanks for sharing that @IcakethereforeIam Utterly horrific. On what basis are these men risk assessed as being ok to be released? It seems absolutely incredible in this day and age that someone like that could be allowed out to re-offend, especially with all the technology available to monitor people. He had a second phone that he used to access dating sites ... 1) Why did nobody check for this and more importantly 2) If someone is so dangerous that them accessing dating sites is going to be a problem, surely they aren't safe to be a part of society?
