Guardian on Transgender participation in the Winter Olympics

No 9 of The Guardian’s things we learnt from the Winter Olympics:

Transgender athlete makes history
Sweden’s Elis Lundholm became the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Winter Olympics when he took part in qualifying for the women’s moguls, finishing 25th and missing out on the final. Last November, the International Olympic Committee edged closer to implementing a ban on transgender women competing in the female category in time for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

The 23-year-old Lundholm was born female and now identifies as a man but has not undergone any gender-affirming treatment or surgery. While this proposed ban will affect other transgender athletes, Lundholm would still be able to compete in the women’s category because it is the same gender he was assigned at birth. “I want everyone to be able to compete fairly against each other,” he said after finishing his run down the Livigno course.

A TIW speaks up for fairness.

Agree. Good for Elis. Competing fairly in the right category.

‘Woman competes in women’s category and is fine with it.’ That could have saved them some word count.

Haha, so true!

I do think it's a very positive thing though (not the Guardian spin which seems to be intentionally conflating trans men and trans women).

"Person identifies and presents how they like while competing in the sports category for their sex" is a great message and one I'd like to see more of.

Velentia · 15/02/2026 16:18

A trans person competing against members of their birth sex is not revolutionary. It is bowing to the massive campaign to put us back in our original boxes.’
Yes. Back in reality.

I agree, but I never mentioned anything about sexuality, it was the other poster replying to me. It was the BBC saying that she was the first transgender athlete competing at the World Cup, which is totally unremarkable, because at the end of the day, she is a woman competing in the women's World Cup.
I think I may be with the majority on here, when I say that my view is - LGB refers to sexuality.
T (which probably includes non binary and all the other 92 genders) refers to a gender identity.

Sorry @oldtiredcyclist, I see that should have been to @HoppityBun.

But that’s got nothing to do with whether she’s lesbian, straight or bisexual.

It just means she identifies as non-binary gender despite being female.

If you read my post again, I said she identified as "non binary", which I simply copied from the BBC article.

SirEctor · 15/02/2026 11:19

It doesn't suit the male agenda because it's not possible for a woman to cheat at sport by pretending to be the opposite sex. This person is genuinely an Olympic level athlete.

On some level most people do understand that the male equivalents are not outstanding athletes and wouldn't stand a chance in the correct category.

JellySaurus · 15/02/2026 10:35

To my mind, what this athlete did is solidarity. She did not have to announce her gender identity belief. It is like a Muslim athlete competing in clothing that meets the modesty requirements of their beliefs.

Helleofabore · 15/02/2026 10:13

Absolutely, Jelly.

I don’t think those men would even care that it is taken as a demand for subservience. Which I agree it is.

JellySaurus · 15/02/2026 10:02

A demand for solidarity, or a demand for subservience?

Helleofabore · 15/02/2026 10:00

Of course, people like Wu and Drennan are unhappy because her competing shows the lie in all the accusations of transgender athletes being ‘banned’. That group actually want female people with transgender identities to boycott sports events that they can legitimately enter.

Not only to add a false sense of strength to their argument about the ‘ban’ because people will assume those female athletes cannot compete if they don’t turn up in protest. The argument can then, of course, be that the bans ‘harms ALL’ trans people. When that is only partly accurate because those female people have chosen to self -exclude.

It is a demand for solidarity.

JumpingPumpkin · 15/02/2026 09:01

She is a woman competing in the women's competition. This makes perfect sense. The Guardian think this is newsworthy because otherwise she pretends to be a man and the G likes to also pretend.

Wu and Drennen are unhappy with the female competitor recognising her sex because men like them don't ever want their sex to be recognised.

All the above is very pleasing to us who never waivered from knowing sex is real.

Non binary is not the same as bisexuality.

Cheers, I thought I was going mad for a while.

Your post said she identified as binary. So you do have an idea about her sex life. My point was that the information is irrelevant

I don’t want to minimise someone’s life, but isn’t this a woman with a short haircut who has sex with men and women? She can dress how she wants and have any hairstyle she likes but I have no interest in her or anyone else’s sex life and I don’t see that it’s necessary to provide that information.

Why do you think that because she has short hair she is bisexual?

singthing · 14/02/2026 19:39

Meredithspants · 14/02/2026 14:20

So he’s a he until being a she gives him a chance to win a medal? But as a he, he stands no chance to win a medal… so returns to being a she for the olympics. And loses anyway… Really strong belief right there about the “wrong body” etc…🤦🏻‍♀️

100% this. I don't understand why everyone is cheering for this person.

She wants to be a he in all ways, yet clearly knows that means zero chance of a medal with her "fellow" men, so takes a place form a woman instead?

She is a traitor to women.

HoppityBun · 14/02/2026 19:27

oldtiredcyclist · 14/02/2026 19:16

I have absolutely no idea about her sex life, or for that matter any other person's affairs.
The simple fact of the matter, is that the BBC think it is news that a woman plays for a women's football team.

The discussion from the likes of Wu, Drennan and other male people with transgender identities has been eye popping. They have declared Elis is doing the wrong thing.

Drennen and Wu don't appear to be using he/him pronouns for Lundholm. Using they/them instead. How interesting.

Well done Elis, and thanks for being a voice of reason.
So much for all the inaccurate twaddle about trans people being excluded from sports.
I don't mind Elis being referred to as he, I just don't believe he is a he and neither does Elis clearly.

Elis probably just wants to kick free from the what women are supposed to do, be, and look like shackles and get on unemcumbered while still in their own body.

Wu hates anybody or any policy that he feels undermines his claim to womanhood 🙄

I can’t believe Wu thinks those filtered pictures he posts of himself fool anyone. I’ve seen lots of video of him that has no filters: he’s a massive unit.

If that’s what he sees when he looks in the mirror, that’s a worrying level of disconnection from reality. And somewhat explains some of his nasty attitude towards the women telling him to stay out of female spaces.

Instagram filters have been damaging for women and girls, and this is yet another way they negatively affect us 🙁

HoppityBun · 14/02/2026 18:36

oldtiredcyclist · 14/02/2026 14:16

This is exactly the same as Quinn, described as the first openly transgender footballer to play in the World Cup, when she decided to identify as "non binary".
Woman identifies as non binary, decides to carry on playing for the women's team.
Bit of a non event really, isn't it?

Good point about the treatment being described.

Would they do that for a transwoman? And women were scolded so badly for even letting their fluffy brains consider that boxer Khekif was male.

WaterThyme · 14/02/2026 17:47

InconvenientlyMaterial · 14/02/2026 14:53

I understand the bitterness but I'm actually really happy to see any person with a trans identity competing in the correct category (or using the correct facilities etc).

I'm never going to believe in gender identity because it goes against values I hold dear, such as being against gender stereotyping. But hey, I don't believe in anyone's God either; or eating meat; or wearing long trousers over high heels.

I want a world where we don't all have to believe the same thing but we can all get along peacefully and this seems a step in that direction. And I bet it probably isn't easy to be that trans person, swimming against the tide of trans ideology.

Is the extract above the full extent of the Guardian article? I guess it put them in a bit of a bind because too much celebration of Elis risks upsetting the (far more important as far as they're concerned) transwomen and true believers of the ideology. I'd love to see the Guardian cope with an article about a transwoman competing in the men's category. Heck I'd even buy it for the first time in 8 years if they managed that!

That was the full section on that person. It was number 9 of 10 on “things you might not know about the Winter Olympics” or similar title.

I was intrigued to see a self-identified trans person doing the reasonable thing we have asked for.

And interested to note how freely Elis’ decisions about medical treatment or lack thereof were overtly described.
