I wonder when this film was developed/written and filmed? I presume it takes a good couple of years for a film to go from development to the cinema. Anyone any idea?

if so, it was probably green lit at a time when there was less push back against anyone questioning non-binary nonsense.

From what I’ve seen in real life and heard in the media, a lot of teens are turning away from hating anything vaguely GC on princlple.

I think there is still a massive problem but I wonder if the film would do better if it had been realised in 2023. Still, if it’s

To me she does what all British “national treasure” thespians do, which is play a thinly disguised version of herself in every role, so while I agree she’s an idiot, I don’t agree that she’s a good actress.

I suppose there will always be people who want to be special, or are keen to shed a tarnished or unfashionable identity. If they don't have an obvious trump card to play, they will reach rather desperately for anything at all.

For example:

Middle class people trying to make out they are actually working class. (And vice versa in circles where the snobbery is direct rather than inverted.)

White guilt people scratching around in their family trees for an ancestor that might possibly have been Native American or Black. Or just outright lying about their antecedents, especially if it might get them a job they wouldn't otherwise have got.

The sort of English person who is desperate not to be English and considers themself "Celtic" on the basis of vague or imagined family connections to Scotland, Ireland or Wales, or "feeling a spiritual connection".

People who are sucker for anything at all, positive or negative, that will put them in a rare or superior category. Or if they are irredeemably ordinary, they must have a special sort of child. YouTube is full of stuff that panders to that kind of thing. Rare blood group, eye colour, "cool" (or dark-and-therefore-sexy) psychological trait... you name it.

It's a human constant, but the desired or disdained categories change with the times and vary in different social settings. Currently "cisheteronormative" is a dirty word in certain circles, so...

My guess is that the financial backers looked at the reviews the film was getting and got the message through to Colman that she had to say something attention-grabbing to drum up interest in the film.
