Labour defections in Newham

Two big names in East End politics, longtime mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales and former Newham cabinet member Clive Furness, have left the Labour Party. They've both been in the party for decades.

Their statement covers a lot of ground about Labour losing its way, but a couple of points of particular interest:

Then there is the grooming-gangs scandal. The party’s reluctance to hold Labour-run councils to account over their role in the scandal has only compounded the harm suffered by thousands of girls and young women. For years, it failed to even acknowledge the gangs’ existence. Even now, following the revelations made in Louise Casey’s National Audit on Group-based Child Exploitation and Abuse, London mayor Sadiq Khan refuses an independent inquiry into the extent of the problem in the nation’s capital – presumably for fear of what it might find.

And I don't think they're about to jump ship to the Greens:

Labour’s embrace of transgender ideology has been particularly dispiriting. Back in April 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the terms ‘man’, ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex. The case, brought by For Women Scotland, clarified the law, making it clear that sex triumphs over wishful thinking. New guidelines from the Equality and Human Rights Commission followed. Nonetheless, a full nine months later, secretary of state for education Bridget Phillipson, who has the backing of unions GMB and Unison (both cheerleaders for gender self-ID), has yet to publish any updated guidance on single-sex spaces. The fact that Keir Starmer has come around to the idea that women can’t have a penis is certainly progress – but behind the words of frontbenchers lies an unreconstructed activist hinterland. Rather than confront them, party leadership quietly appeases them.

They've now joined Reform.

Bloody hell

They've now joined Reform.

I thought they might eventually. They may not be big names nationally but that's quite a coup in the world of London local government. Clive will be candidate for mayor of Newham - I don't expect him to win but he could pull more voters than a generic Reform candidate.

Lower profile but more significant will be Robin's role as director of local government in London. Reform have had problems with councillors going rogue. This is a counter-measure - a Robin Wales bollocking is not an experience you soon forget.

That's quite a Reformy critique (and unless I've missed something in my skim-reading the only Lab figures, other than the PM, who are criticised by name are women). Is it possible that the former mayor of Newham is the significant Lab figure that Farage was teasing as a forthcoming defector a while back?

They've now joined Reform.

I should probably explain that, even by east London Labour standards, Newham is a bit special.

Gone are the days when Labour could be confident of winning every seat on the council. It's likely that in May they will lose bigly to Newham Independents (Muslims), Greens (middle class lefties who love LTNs) and even Reform (the residual working class whites in the borough).

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz has worn out her welcome, and a whole bunch of councillors are also standing down. Apparently Labour HQ have noticed the unusual number of Newham councillors who have close relationships - spouses or parent/child - with other councillors. We can't tolerate nepotism, because Sir Keir Starmer is an ethical man.

Also, I believe both CLPs in the borough are still under suspension, having initially been suspended all the way back in 2020, which means candidate selections will be imposed - that seems to mean that the local MPs will give their preferred names to some anonymous apparatchik in HQ who will get it rubber stamped by a subcommittee of the NEC.

Nobody knows what's going on.

If this all sounds like some Soviet Bloc regime on its last legs, you aren't wrong.

This happening in other east London boroughs, ie Labour Councillors resigning and going independent or being expelled and going independent.

A lot of it specific local issues, but also because of Labour becoming less and less democratic in how it operates and its absolute rule that you must follow the agreed line.

However on reading more about the 2 men concerned, dont expect much local news coverage and local papers just want shouty headlines about what will happen at the elections.

Not interested in theory or proposals.

Thanks OP for this information.

I am not in the boroughs concerned but do live in east London, and check east London news outlets.

I can not find any report of this!

Hmm

Crumbs, they haven’t left many stones unturned in their commentary.

EasternStandard · 05/02/2026 16:05

Good on them

SionnachRuadh · 05/02/2026 16:00

I should mention that, about the holiday period, Newham Independents had their big meeting to launch their election campaign. Corbyn was there, and so was Dewsbury MP Iqbal Mohamed. Corbyn did his normal Thought For The Day speech, and Iqbal did a well received speech about independents beating Labour in Dewsbury and Batley.

Not everyone in the room was Muslim, but over 90% were. Apart from Gaza, they mostly seemed irate about parking charges. I think this might be the coming political trend in the East End - pro Palestine, pro small business, pro motorist. They like Corbyn personally, but they aren't particularly left wing.

I don't think they'll sweep the borough, but they stand a decent chance for the mayoralty and any ward that's more than about 35% Muslim. The main question is whether they've got any perspective of appealing to voters outside that community.

But I think the Greens will also pick up votes, and Reform will do better than expected. Labour is bleeding out in multiple directions.

Wales, to be fair to him, has been around since long before anyone imagined a Corbyn leadership, and the circumstances in 2018 when, having been reselected as mayoral candidate, he then got deselected, have never been explained. Labour politics in East London are shady at the best of times, and they didn't get less shady under Team Corbyn.

Yes, it's a rundown borough, and it's always been a rundown borough. That's what the area was like when Keir Hardie got elected to Parliament there in 1892. The fact of it still being rundown after a century or more of Labour dominance is worth thinking about. That's a long term problem of Labourism. It's not a factional thing; certain local authorities used to be heavily Masonic dominated, but that's no different from Ken Livingstone's mayoral administration being a job club for Socialist Action.

It's a shame that there aren't any Labour MP's would could see the light, if they left it would help to start cutting down Two Tiers majority.

deadpan · 05/02/2026 15:10

I'm a labour member and I agree with them about GI and the grooming gangs situation. Not enough is being done to support and change things for those girls/women past or present.

Abhannmor · 05/02/2026 14:35

RedToothBrush · 05/02/2026 12:34

Wtf has this got to do with anything?!

Everything. It's sort of self explanatory unless you are being deliberately obtuse. The above post about how Wales earned his brownie points helping to destroy Corbyn is quite revealing too in its own way. Newham is one of the most rundown boroughs in London. Yet we are told brave Sir Robin ' gets things done '. What things I wonder. No wonder the vote is splintering every which way.

SionnachRuadh · 05/02/2026 12:40

I mean Newham is one of those boroughs that's been run by Labour forever, often Labour has held every single seat on the council, and it's still got some of the worst social outcomes in the country.

I wouldn't say Robin Wales was universally popular, but he was pretty good at getting things done. Of course he was old school Labour Right, one of those guys who cut his teeth fighting Militant, didn't get on with the Corbyn leadership and was deselected in murky circumstances in 2018.

Newham Labour is leaking support quite badly to the Greens, on a bigger scale to the Muslim-led Newham Independents, and even to Reform. East London could be a bloodbath for Labour in May.

I’m sure the wheels will be already be in motion to cancel that election for *reasons.

Newham Labour used to be run by the Freemasons years ago. Lots of boroughs were of course.Another reason you need PR - too many safe seats in local and national government always leads to stagnation and corruption. Perhaps they've exchanged one form of Freemasonry for another.

Not picking on Labour....I'm sure the same applies in safe Tory seats.

Wtf has this got to do with anything?!

Someone I was arguing with online once actually argued, with that as evidence, that it was why it was wrong to say “trans rights” was a white middle class luxury belief 🤦🏽‍♀️

I don't want to say there's no alphabet community in Newham, there probably is in the yuppified area around the Stratford Olympic development where they have Green councillors, but the rest of the borough... no. Very ethnically mixed and very working class.

So: not many trans people. But lots and lots of Bengali or Yoruba speakers who couldn't figure out what this nonsense question meant.

Wow. I'm genuinely shocked.

And delighted.

Let us also not forget that this is Newham

According to the 2021 Census, the London Borough of Newham had the highest proportion of transgender residents in England and Wales, with 1.51% of people aged 16 and over (approximately 3,000–4,000 people) identifying with a gender different from their sex registered at birth.

That's the flawed 2021 Census where the highest number of non English speakers couldn't understand the fucking question and put they were trans much to the shock and surprise of Brighton and Bristol and all the trans cheerleaders who have never met anyone from Newham....
