Welcome to Part 3 of Mumsnet charting the drama inside Your Party. We have followed YP from the start when it looked liked it might be a major player to its ongoing internal row which has left it struggling.

We have the best and funniest commentary on British hard left wing politics, looking not just at YP itself, but wider issues plaguing the left. Dominated by the problem which weirdly didn't worry Marx, the Chartists, Anarchists, Trade Unionists, even Communist regimes, or much of the long history of left wing feminists, but suddenly in the last ten or so years has become huge. Is Human biology a thing ? Are men in dresses the most oppressed people on the planet even if they are billionaires?

Currently we are looking at Your Party internal elections which have been dominated by the split between the Corbyn and Sultana factions who have different visions of how the party should look. Summarised here:

Your Party? Whose elections?
https://www.workersliberty.org/story/2026-01-21/your-party-whose-elections?language_content_entity=en

Sultana's Grassroots Left slate not only added Corbyn without permission but others. It seems they are being denounced for undemocratic manoeuvres.

Fractures amongst Sultana's shadow caucus have opened up
https://skidrowradio.substack.com/p/the-slate-that-wasnt

As always the Men in Dresses have outsize importance. The Trans Liberation group are backing the Sultanate Grassroots Left faction, but things as always are messy.

The set up of the YP voting also means there are male and female posts in each region. The non binary types are claiming this is unfair what about them:
Is this trolling? LGBTQIA+ group demand "non-binary" CEC spots
A Your Party clique is infuriated that non-men/women isn't a category for the elections.
https://skidrowradio.substack.com/p/is-this-trolling-lgbtqia-group-demand

There is plenty more crazy to come.

All about the conference and run up which really saw YP faction fighting intensify. Highlights included a Scottish "trans" male sex pest berating the conference.

Your Party? Whose elections?

Edited 21.1.26 with updates. Ruth Cashman, a regular writer for Solidarity, was initially banned from standing for the Central Executive Committee of Your Party on grounds that YP rules exclude members of “other national political parties”. She appeale...

People (ok, blokes) who play football with Starmer say: he's very serious about the game, he puts in lots of energy, he's not a bad player exactly, he's just got zero instinctive feel for the game. That tells you something about him.

The fact that Corbyn doesn't put on a persona, he really is exactly how he appears to be, I think is key to why people warm to him... and often blind themselves to his faults.

The football thing is very interesting.

Lalgarh · 09/02/2026 10:11

Starmer oddly reminds me now of Hector the Inspector, the Inland Revenue's mascot designed to humanise the labyrinthine tax system in the 1990s.

Slightly blank but stolid

People with autism do not tend to have instinctive responses to social situations. Responses have to be rehearsed and learned, and so often come across as wooden and uncomfortable.

Of course you do 🙄

What is this supposed to mean or imply?

Shortshriftandlethal · 09/02/2026 09:37

error

DameProfessorIDareSay · 09/02/2026 09:36

"Ellie Gomersall, who was poised to be elected as a Green MSP via the Glasgow regional list prior to defecting to Your Party, said the conference had "proved our commitment to becoming a serious political force”"

Thanks for this @fromorbit I had somehow managed to miss the fact that even the batshit Scottish Greens were no longer batshit enough for ‘Ellie’. In my opinion there is only one issue he really cares about; getting men into women’s spaces. Can’t see that going down well with Muslim voters.

Yes, he is. But Starmer is also very wooden and awkward ( I suspect autism)

What I mean is in his demeanour and the way he talks to people. Unfailingly polite and 'reasonable' in tone.

So is Starmer.

Playingvideogames · 09/02/2026 09:12

He doesn’t. He does what every other politician does - support what suits their narrative and ignore anything that doesn’t.

He made a big song and dance of posting his concern over the Gisele Pelicot case, but has never once mentioned the ‘grooming gang’ scandal. Because to him, racial harmony is king, and anything that undermines it (even rape) must be hurriedly swept under the rug.

Same with political violence, despises it when it’s against somebody he supports, doesn’t mention it when he’s gushing over somebody who broke a policewoman’s spine with a sledgehammer or Hamas raping women to death and murdering children.

Yes, for all his blnid spots Corbyn at least tries to conduct himself in a way that is reflective of what he is preaching.

I can imagine her as a character from The Muppet Show.

Maybe 'Crazy Harry' the pyrotechnic freak?

Lalgarh · 09/02/2026 09:05

Leading an inquisition maybe for the secret police

I think Corbyn missed his calling in some ways. In another timeline he'd have been a trendy vicar, and his congregation would have loved him.

I can't think of another role in society Sultana could have played, except as the model for Student Grant in Viz.

It's all a bit tragic, isn't it? I can't help but still retain a bit of a soft spot for Corbyn; despite him folding to genderwoo, like the vast majority of the Left and , centre-left, I still think of him as a fundamentally decent guy. Sultana, OTOH, seems completely poisonous to me. Meanwhile, Refom will probably win the election anyway.

Sultana on the attack against hapless Rachel Millward from the greens for being soft on stopping war spending.

https://nitter.net/zarahsultana/status/2015498160395723195#m

There is something to be said for increasing spend on health, but it's quaintly pointless if there is a glaring gap in national security that means say NHS data could be hacked ( she'd focus on Palantir but seems not to notice the threat from Chinese or Russian malevolent actors).

You'd think she would be aware that the rise in far right content in the UK is often times being generated in Russia or China etc, and that this is maybe a threat to cohesion that she's supposed to be fighting for .? No?

It is quite an irony for someone so aggressive and combative to stand on a platform of being anti war, and peace, love and harmony.

Bloody hell whos even in Your Party anymore? Is it just Corbyn and Sultana having a scrap in the proverbial empty room?

They have about 11,000 active members and supposedly 50,000 signed up but due to internal drama those membership details cannot be accessed.

So that is not bad.

However it remains to be seen if they can do anything more than arguing a lot.

They will have people standing in May.

Thing is @moto748e , when I've been to gatherings of left wing intellectuals in recent years years, it's been disappointing. Go to the Historical Materialism conference, and I defy you to find anything historical or materialist. It's ID politics and genderwoo all the way.

That's the Marxist intellectuals. As for Labour intellectuals, we're a long way from the days of Tony Crosland or Roy Jenkins. There's Lord Glasman and that's about it.

The Left has no shortage of clever people, but they're all wasting their time on nonsense. I don't see many of them thinking seriously about why nothing works in the UK, or how to rewire government so it serves the people.

There's a bit of that on the Right. I don't want to overegg that, because the Right may be less pretentious than the Left but it still runs very much on vibes. But what I like about Danny Kruger is, he explicitly doesn't claim to have the answers, he just says he thinks he's asking the right questions.

I think that's the task, to ask the right questions. When I try to dig into what the people around Andy Burnham think, it's mostly rehashing the stuff Mark Perryman was writing about in Marxism today in 1987 - PR, the progressive rainbow coalition, maybe think a little about UBI. Even if I believed in it, it's answering the questions of two generations ago.

Talking of Marxist (?*) intellectuals.
