So what would have happened to her if she’d told the doctor on the phone a catheter was needed for a female patient?

Ah, that's easy. She should have just said the patient was one of the 0.5% of females that have a penis. She could have dug out a Keir Starmer interview clip when he said 0.5% of men have a cervix, and sent the link to the doctor she was talking to, informing that doctor that because our PM said it, it must be right.

Greyskybluesky · 22/01/2026 18:31

From Sex Matters:
She also noted that a white colleague used male pronouns for the same patient but
was not investigated.

I hope other papers reprint this interview.

Its heartbreaking that she has been treated as she has. I am not someone who believes in faiths, but am disgusted that when it suits them authorities will allows that some beliefs have to be respected but when it doesn't the dont.

In this case I expect racism was the biggest driving factor in her treatment.

Also if they are not taking action I hope they will pay her the loss of income by them demoting her.

I am sure that was part of an attempt to get her to resign.

All these managers playing these power games, making sure that they are okay.

Although they probably cant because of their employment contracts, I would hope that the prison staff who had to restrain the maniac would give evidence on her behalf.

It must have been really terrifying.

Bet the hospital didn't do a risk assessment knowing that a female member of staff had been subjected to this violence.

I'm in an allied medical profession. Having the Sword of Damocles hanging over you ie threat to strike off etc, is one of the worst feelings you can have. Especially when there is zero wrong done by you as applies to Nurse Mellie here.
Where's the penalty for egregious action against an innocent member of staff?
There isn't any, nice when they collect their gold plated pensions for being shitty human beings.

nicepotoftea · 22/01/2026 17:29

I think the case will be important because it must specifically address the obligation to use preferred pronouns.

Is it essential to the patient care of a paedophile?

I guess it will all come out at the tribunal in April

Popcorn at the ready.
This is so surreal
Apparently, the battle for trans rights was going to be the final frontier, the last minority to be lifted up, the whole of society the winner.
What did we find instead?
Trans lack no rights.
Another group lose their rights.
And the controllers of the narrative will crush any woman who stands in their way.
Yep, the whole of society is the winner.

ItsCoolForCats · 22/01/2026 14:57

AreYouSureAskedNaomi · 22/01/2026 13:49

So she was basically demoted. I'd love to see the internal emails between HR and her managers.

I'm in a medical related profession, and have some idea just how stressful being struck off could be. It's evident that on the one hand the elites grades in medicine are protected, surgeons, senior consultants, whistle blowers feel the full force of NHS blowback when one of their elites are threatened.
But everyone below that exhalted clique, primarily nurses, are fair game.

lcakethereforeIam · 22/01/2026 12:03

Unbelieveable, that's actually worse than I thought it was. I'm hoping when she was forced into a lower grade her pay and pension were protected.

I’ve read the entire thread and I’m honestly disappointed noone has mentioned this investigation was for a potential breach of patient confidentiality not misgendering. She gave media interviews with a level of detail that could easily have identified the patient. Even without naming that is potentially an NMC breach.

If a nurse refused to acknowledge a patient’s same-sex partner as their husband, told them it was their “religious belief”, then went to the press after a complaint and disclosed a load of that gay patient’s personal information to the public that might have led them to be identified, people would (rightly) be furious. 😞

Why do you think she went to the media in the first place? It’s Jennifer Melle who has been wronged here.

Fear not - from the BBC website

The trust said it was concerned confidential details about the patient's appearance, diagnosis and treatment were shared with the media - but it found no evidence that the patient had been identified.

As for your attempt at an analogy - do you know how ridiculous that looks? A same sex husband is a husband - a bloke is not, and never will be, a woman. No-one is required to believe that or pretend to believe that, nor is it a requirement for anyone to use wrong sex pronouns - the law is very clear on that.

I don't remember hearing much about his appearance, but his diagnosis and treatment were relevant to the reasons why it was necessary to refer to his sex.

RoyalCorgi · 21/01/2026 13:03

Can't find precise details. Sex Matters say she is suing the trust for discrimination, harassment and breach of her human rights.

From what I remember reading before, she is arguing that being forced to refer to someone by their gender identity, rather than their sex, conflicts with her religious belief that you cannot change sex. Religious belief is of course a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. I don't know if she also intends to claim that it conflicts with her gender-critical belief, which is also protected, of course.

The Human Rights Act protects freedom of thought and freedom to practise one's religion, so that's interesting too, because previous tribunal claims have, if I'm not mistaken, relied on the Equality Act rather than the HRA.

Harassment is fairly straightforward, I think, in that they clearly disciplined her and made life difficult for her purely because she referred to a man as "he".

Oh I so hope this goes ahead. The law is very clear on both - it will be a delight watching the Trust trying to argue that.

InflagranteDelicto · 21/01/2026 14:04

Brilliant news, I'm so pleased for her.

It should never have escalated like this though.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/01/2026 13:53

Why does it always take years for NHS trusts to get to the point where they decide there was nothing to answer for. Do they put the staff on the disciplinary pathway on a waiting list like the patients are. 🤯

PassTheHanky · 21/01/2026 13:48

"He abused Jennifer Melle by using a particularly vile racist comment so I hope the police are involved to get him done for racist abuse"

I read one article which said the Trust had written to the prisoner to tell him that racial abuse wasn't allowed. No mention was made of the police being involved.

I wonder if the prisoner/paedophile was:
a) really upset after the Trust told him he was out of order or
b) laughing up his sleeve and not a bit bothered by the upset he'd caused to the poor nurse who had tried to help him.

It's appalling that bad faith actors are allowed to affect hard working nurses' lives so badly and get away with it.

Thanks @RoyalCorgi. Should be a really interesting case.

RhannionKPSS · 21/01/2026 13:08

The pervert was in hospital, accompanied by a prison officer, to have a catheter inserted, so knowing his sex was rather important for the procedure.

Is one of her tribunal claims about their policy on pronouns? And how this conflicts with her GC and religious beliefs? So will look at the lawfulness of that policy?

Poor woman, this is so bad. With all this stuff the process is punishment enough.
