As a software engineer, there’s nowhere better than San Francisco. It’s a tough life and Uber really hurt me and it took a long time to recover from, but my earning potential in San Francisco is consistently over $600,000/year. I see people back in SF with my background regularly making seven figures. This is mind-blowing to me, but when I left I was also at my healthiest, my wisest, and most ready to take on something as difficult as Uber was.

Yeah, there is something a bit morally repugnant about these people using up resources that should go to legitimate refugees whose lives are actually in danger.

The mother who'd "fled" with her trans 14 year old made my jaw drop. Maybe get your child some therapy to help them understand their feelings about their body and deal with their suicidal ideation, rather than dramatically "fleeing" across the Atlantic in order to lodge a completely spurious asylum claim.

The chances of Americans actually being granted asylum are very low, according to Marlou Schrover, a professor of economic and social history at Leiden University, who studies the Dutch immigration system.
The UN refugee convention has very strict conditions, said Shrover. Not only must a refugee prove that they faced persecution in their home country, but they must also show that they tried to get help from the local authorities but were denied protection. “And after that, you have to see if there is a safe flight alternative within your country.”
Even getting beaten up by the police is not enough: “Of course Afro-Americans might say: ‘Look, I’m beaten up in the street by police officers, so I can claim refugee status in the Netherlands’ based on this. So the claim has to be really strong.”
For a claim to be successful, the US would have to start detaining trans people for their gender identity, suggested Shrover: “If the US moves towards putting people in prison, treating them really, really bad because of their [gender identity], and with no other claim added to the reasons why they’re in prison, then the situation would definitely change.” But simply denying someone the right to put their chosen gender on their passport is nowhere near enough, she added.
The Dutch authorities are also very wary about declaring the US an unsafe country and provoking Trump, said Shrover. They think: ‘How will it look? How will the Americans respond to that? We can’t do this to our most important ally, saying that they don’t have a functioning democracy.’”

I saw a lot of videos when trump got in of people trying to fundraise to move abroad as ‘trans people would be put in prison/killed’.
I can’t imagine they got the necessary funds and they’d only be able to visit on a tourist visa mostly anyway.
So I’m guessing this is their next plan.

He seems to be talking about trans people from Iran and Libya.

But I agree, I suspect their experiences might be just a little bit worse than someone from San Francisco.

That struck me as well. How self centred do you have to be to believe you are experiencing the same circumstances as someone fleeing Afghanistan.

From reading the article I would imagine they have no chance of being allowed asylum since they have no evidence of direct abuse, physical violence etc.

I don’t think anyone can due to the SCTA. Hardly anyone claims in Canada from US.

Dude, you can totally keep living as a man without being on testosterone ! There's no rule saying you can't be a transman if you're not on T.

More generally : those people make me cringe hard, but I'm not that surprised. I noticed, back when I was in the community, how so many of them made being trans their entire life. So the smallest molehill was indeed a gigantic mountain. Makes sense that they would ditch their entire life just because they faced some adversity, and wouldn't realise how over the top they are being and acting.

I couldn't believe the point in the article where one of the trans 'refugees' directly compared their experience to people fleeing Iran and Libya: "our stories were so similar".

Oh dear. Women objected to having a man in the ladies. Passports stating correct sex.
Canada is the very obvious choice but there’s little drama or martyrdom to that I guess.

Can't read it. Any chance of giving a rough idea what it's saying?

So far none have been given asylum.

Honestly, I have no words.

I’m surprised that Canada isn’t being seen as a suitable option. It’s an immediate neighbour.
