Dylan Mulvaney cast as Anne Boleyn

I've never seen it or even read the lyrics, (I've been studiously ignoring it,) but that sounds absolutely dire. Anne was fiercely intelligent and a Reformist. I feel like The Tudors did a better job if that description is anything to go by.

There is of course an incontrovertible rationale for DM portraying Anne Boleyn as there is a direct link between DM and Anne Boleyn :

-DM [in]famously appeared in ads for Nike Sportswear

-before West Ham football club moved to the London Stadium their stadium was Upton Park which was on a site known historically for the family who used to own it

-namely Boleyn Ground after Anne Boleyn's family

Try as I might I've never managed to get that worked up about DM - he's so obviously a do-anything-for-fame theatre gay who's found that larping full time has given him the fame and fortune that I doubt he is talented enough to have otherwise.

I'm not a fan of musical theatre anyway and would rather cut my own head off than go and see this, but I agree with the pps who say that including a man as one of the wives takes it to a whole other level of disrespect when everything that happened to those women was because of their sex.

Doesn't surprise me at all. The programme is pronoun central. And they write about being shocked by how binary their conception of gender was when they first conceived the show.

That is because it is disrespectful. On a whole other level.

Women (female people) have a right to our own stories and voices. The shit that happened and happens to us because of our bodies, good and bad, and the way our real lives are reframed and constrained by social stereotypes laid on our bodies, is something trans women will never experience.

Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of women over history have been blamed, sidelined, divorced or murdered because they did not produce the desired male heir. None of them were trans women.

Through history, women have been shunted into gender roles that give us status but also limit and constrain us. Trans women take these constraints and believe they are the definition of us.

If you really can't see why this matters, if you value female voices and experiences so little you are happy to have men stand in for us and think it's the same, I feel very sorry for you.

You can dress it up as much as you want, the fact is that everyone was apparently happy for this show to bimble on for years cheapening ABs life / story (although you can certainly make it sound more palatable by calling it "reindividualising" I suppose).

It's only now there's a trans person involved that everyone's suddenly decided it's disrespectful.

Do you not see the difference between a show about women, performed by womenl, leveraging female stereotypes to rethink and reindividualise the women of an extremely well known historic occurance outside the dominant narrative, and a show about the same women and events where one of those women is played by a man who can only be considered a "woman" if you take those very stereotypes as fundamental and definitional of womanhood, and if the female biology and procreative role that was so fundamental to all of them in their role as queen (and to Bolyen's story perhaps the most) being some sort of side thing some humans experience but nothing to do with the business of being a woman at all?

Make it into a camp, drag queenie type show, loosely based on historical events.

More men pushing drag on us. I saw Unfortunate the musical, it was AMAZING. The lead was a fat middle aged woman and she was incredible. I could even live with the extremely sexist joke at the end because the pretty young thing was being played by a man. It was a really interesting upending of power dynamics. Now however they have a man playing the lead role. I have no interest is that. It is like Hairspray, can't let a fat middle aged woman on the stage, it has to be a man in drag.

I might go just to throw mouldy veg at him.

The whole musical makes a mockery of her life.

It's not like this is a reverent, sincere, theatrical production of her life with DM thrown in.

Where was the outrage for Ann Boleyn when they've got her character singing lines about doing what her daddy tells her to, how politics isn't her thing, how she's "fitter" than CoA, and how she's going to flirt with men to make Henry "jell"?

Oh fuck off. Despite Anne Boylen's disdain for Catherine (of Aragon) and Mary, the poor woman had several miscarriages, wanted to breastfeed Elizabeth, was framed for things I don't believe were true, and was killed by her husband. I feel like this makes a mockery of her life.
