The title is slightly clickbaity but the article seems fairly balanced to me.
It's about what Starmer and Labour have done wrong to lose support. No element of smear against Mumsnet.

I don't think it was about identity, neither skin colour nor sex.
I think voters just found Obama more appealing.
Making stuff about skin colour or sex always ends up badly.

I don't remember what Hillary was like when she was up against Obama, but when she went up against Trump she had a wide streak of arrogance and entitlement to her. The "basket of deplorables" comnment and her "Happy Birthday to this future President" with a picture of herself as a child tweet. That tweet is still up. It was made just a few day over a week before the vote. There are a lot of movies where someone is so full of themselves that the gods punish them for their arrogance. To me it felt like that. What kind of leader are the voters going to get if a candidate is that full of themself right before the election? At least wait until you've won.

And she was telling Bill no, she didn't need to visit places like Michigan, her campaign manager said that wasn't necessary - while Trump was in Michigan talking to factory workers and telling them he was going to revive the American car industry.

The only way it was caused by her being a woman is if lady brain meant she couldn't see why that was a serious strategic error.

True. I mean it's not like we get poor specimens of men in power is it ?

Is that an argument?

She ran a shit campaign, it doesn't reflect on women, just on herself.

@SionnachRuadh
These would be the institutions that are already riddled with useful idiot virtue signalers?
The police, more interested in offensive tweets and non crime hate incidents than crime.
The BBC protectors of paedophiles, rape gangs, men in women's prisons, and "from the river to the sea".
Academia where a lot of this started.
NGOs being paid by government ministers to tell them what to think, even when their advice is against the law.
The civil service who decide how Britain will be run not the elected politicians - see Cummings links in this thread.
The who edifice is rotten.

It is why people like Farage and Trump have so much power. Because common sense the and basic everyday needs of the voters comes dead last in the eyes of the useful idiot virtue signallers. You can only push people sof far for so long before people get sick of it and start pushing back. That's why people call Farage a release valve, because people are looking to leaders like him and Trump for relief. The longer the pressure builds up the bigger the bang when it eventually goes off. Explosives literally work like this. The more constrictive the vessel they are stored in, the bigger the bang when they are set off.
Farage is right about if you think he's bad, wait until what comes after him.

So, ignoring the derail, we've got an elite that's wildly out of touch, and an elite that's increasingly explicit in seeing democracy as a pesky annoyance. The numpties on TRIP are not outliers, they are speaking for their class.

I think this is a very dangerous situation, and we can count ourselves lucky that we've got the populism we've got, and not something genuinely extremist. This might not hold if Labour allow their authoritarian instincts to prevail.

If you start out from the premise that the institutions are the only true preserves of Paddington Bear British Values, and therefore we must defend the institutions at all costs, and not even allow ourselves to think about why the institutions aren't working... we might lose the failing institutions anyway, and we might lose more than that.

Perhaps it might have been more productive for you to say "these are the points in your post I disagree with" rather than "you quoted someone I dislike and therefore you're a bad person".

I didn't say you were a bad person. I think Cummings is a bad person. Or more specifically a deeply dishonest manipulative and hypocritical person. Unless you are actually Dominic Cummings then don't worry about it.

I came across this article in The Critic that I think contains some information relevant to this thread's discussion:

https://thecritic.co.uk/into-the-boomerverse/

"It isn’t just decent but out-of-touch commentators like John Harris, or even somewhat otherworldly former Archbishops who keep their minds chastely behind a veil of ignorance about modern Britain — it’s Sir Keir, our less than beloved national Don Quixote.

His faith in public institutions which have manifestly failed, his reverence for international laws that nobody is following anymore, his assumption that economic renewal will take care of itself and his confused obeisance to progressive trends all reflect the time-warp generation. He believes in institutions because they worked for him, he blindly worships international law because it was a fiction still indulge in his youth, he expects the economy to turn around because it always did before and he takes the knee to the BLMs of this world because he liked to sing along to Free Nelson Mandela as a young man. There are no nostalgics like progressive nostalgics….

…Things that were once Britain’s chief strengths — stability, the rule of law and institutional continuity — have become collective curses when removed from the context of patriotism and a government focused on the national interest. Whilst other countries have woken up to the reality of a changing world and new threats, unanticipated by the framers of the post-war Western order, Britain remains asleep even as the house burns down around it. Leaders care more about international law, proceduralism and liberal civility than they do about their fellow citizens. "

Huh?
You said you agreed with DC. I said I think he's a hypocrite who enjoys manipulating for the sake of manipulating. I was adding to the discussion.

You: "I like olive ice-cream"
Me: "I dont because..."
You: "dont stop me expressing myself."

Disagreement is not cancellation.

@persephonia I'm sorry, I didn't realise you had been designated Dungeon Master. Perhaps for all our benefit you could make clear how we should express ourselves, and give an approved list of people who can be quoted.

This is the point Dom Cummings was making in his recent appearance on the Spectator podcast. I don't always agree with Chairman Dom, but he was on the nail.

The Democrats should have responded to Trump's election wins by saying, we need better candidates and more appealing policies. Our next campaign should be more about kitchen table issues and less about Hillary partying with celebrities. But nooooo, they doubled down on their mistakes, they just said, we should have imprisoned Trump, we should have blocked Elon from buying X, we should have pressured big tech into doing more censorship, we should have had more of the woke identity politics that even our own voters hate.

Ten years later we're seeing a handful of ambitious Democrats cautiously suggest that maybe it might be a good idea to talk about kitchen table issues.

It's a similar thing in Britain, and I'm not going to get into whether Brexit was a good or bad idea, but the political class promised us a referendum, and promised to abide by the result, and when they didn't get the result they wanted, spent the next several years behaving like a toddler refusing to put his wellies on.

There were a handful of Labour MPs in Red Wall seats - Stephen Kinnock, Caroline Flint, Gloria De Piero - who said, we voted Remain, we don't like the result, but the people have spoken and we have to accept that. Labour could have listened to them but preferred not to. A similar dynamic was behind Leanne Wood's marginalisation in Plaid.

There is a trend, as Cummings points out, of West European governments dusting off the box of tricks they used to stage colour revolutions in Eastern Europe and using them to prevent populists coming to power at home.

This idea that the electorate is deficient and the political class needs to save us from our own bad decisions - that's not a fringe view, it's very common among regime mouthpieces like Rory Stewart and James O'Brien and Lewis Goodall. It's the same kind of thinking that gives us MPs like Alex Sobel saying he doesn't want terfs voting for him.

I think this is a very dangerous trend. You may not like Nigel Farage but he's a safety valve. The more the centrist political class continue on their authoritarian turn, the more likely we'll end up with something much uglier.

Dominic Cummings is an immense hypocrite if that's what he was saying.
There are lots of people (actually Mary Harrington is one, Douglas Murray is another) who I really disagree with but you get a sense they have a stable set of values/beliefs and so you can listen to what they are saying. Then there are this whole cadre of people who mostly cut their teeth as internet trolls/internet warriors who will just say whatever. There's a delight in manipulation. Dominic Cummings is a really good example of that. I think accessing others of viewing the electorate as stupid/needing to be controlled is an acufession. Even if there is a tiny element of truth with establishment types like Rory. Actually Rory is another who I find annoying at times but can still listen to. He does come across as condescending/out of touch on some issues but at least he's making a genuine attempt to communicate.

Everyone puts themselves above the political discussionin a "what would the herds think of this" way to a certain extent. Even the description of Farage as "an important safety valve" is you doing that. Your positioning yourself outside/above the general public. It's part of the meta commentary everyone does now. Left and right.

PH has never had a "war r*pe" category on PH. Not defending PH just pointing out facts.

Surprising JB felt the need to do that since if PH is so bad as some say it is finding actual facts to criticise it shouldn't be too difficult.

Anyway strange times we live in since thanks to Elon Musk's AI (see other thread) Twitter now has more illegal porn on it than PH does. PH has strict rules on illegal content, has moderation and requires all uploaders to verify their identity, while Twitter has a spoiled manchild with too much money running it who thinks everything is a game. Anyone can create an anonymous account on Twitter and within seconds ask it to generate revenge porn or CP out of real photos of women and children.

Are you boasting there? I mean, you must have tried doing that to know it only takes a few seconds wouldn’t you? Most people wouldn’t know or have any inclination to know about that but you seem to be an expert. As the kids say. EWWWWWWW.

Pornhub added all those rules after Visa and Mastercard shut down payment processing because PH were provably hosting rape footage of underage girls and other child sexual abuse material. Prior to them being hit in the wallet, it was an absolute free-for-all.

Pornhub never returned search results if you typed the word "rape". That didn't stop uploaders from adding rape footage. They never returned results if you typed "child",¿ but they still hosted CSA material. Given the ubiquity of smartphones even in war zones, they will have hosted footage of rapes by soldiers and irregular combatants. All a "category" is on such a website is a search term that returns results. If the material is there, it forms a category.

I'm not "on the side of PH". I'm on the side of facts.

Sexual exploitation can be tackled without the need to do a Julie Bindel by telling porkie pies.

Facts like people can change sex? Or facts that are actual, well, facts?

lechiffre55 · 08/01/2026 20:19

"Twitter now has more illegal porn on it than PH does"
Is that an admission PH has illegal porn? But defended by saying twitter has more? How do you know how much illegal porn PH has? Have you 'researched' it?

It feels like you are emotionally upset that people are maligning your favourite porn website?

The unpleasant truth was that she publicly called her opponents a basket of deplorable.

In light of all the scummy and downright illegal material that appears on PH, you're going to raise a footling objection to whether they had a category on the website as your damning evidence as to why Julie Bindel can't be believed on anything?

Couldn't you find some evidence against her that didn't involve you vouching for the good character of Canadian pornographers?
