Pro-trans group funds campaign to keep use of prostitutes legal

A pro-trans group has funded a campaign against men being punished for hiring prostitutes, it can be revealed.

The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation gave nearly £580,000 to a charity lobbying Scottish parliamentarians to oppose legislation that would make it a crime to buy sex, documents show.
National Ugly Mugs, a charity supporting prostitutes, is campaigning against a private members bill currently making its way through Holyrood.

At present, while soliciting in public and brothel-keeping are illegal, paying for sex is legal.

The reforms, spearheaded by <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/VJX4r/www.telegraph.co.uk/ash-regan" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ash Regan, the ex-Alba member for Scottish Parliament, would decriminalise the selling of sex and fine those who buy it up to £10,000. It could also give them possible jail sentences as part of a wider approach described as the ‘Nordic model’.

The bill has been <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/VJX4r/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/09/19/police-scotland-msp-bill-decriminalise-se/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">backed by Police Scotland and – in principle – SNP ministers, who say it needs more work before they will give it parliamentary support.

But it can now be revealed that Ugly Mugs, the group which has campaigned against the bill, is being funded by one of the UK’s largest progressive foundations.

Since 2017, the charity has received £578,200 in grants from the Esmée Fairbairn foundation.

That does feel very uncomfortable to me - if selling sex has been normalised in your family growing up, I can understand seeing it like that, but at the same time I can't see how having sex with randoms each day would seem easier. What other options did these girls have?

I do agree that a woman choosing to sell sex to earn more money isn't forced/paid rape as some people on here argue all prostitution is. I wish there were better options though if they wanted to earn more money.

The one woman I referred to made sure her DD had choices. A good education at an expensive private school, money put away for university. She paid her taxes as well, she was bright but she felt it was her best choice. I can't judge, I haven't always made the most sensible choices.

There was a drama about one of the Yorkshire Rippers victims. Ordinary housewife who wanted to provide for her kids. She very much reminded me of some of the women I met. Not all done were on drugs or being used by a pimp.

Prostitutes vary more than you might imagine. I've known one who decided to do it as she didn't have qualifications to fund the life she wanted for her and her daughter, she was a single parent. She bought a house for cash and sent her DD to the most expensive school in the city. I knew many who did it occasionally when money was short. Yes I knew some who were funding drug habits. I knew a family where mum was a prostitute dad was a pimp and their daughters became prostitutes with their son being a pimp. Just the family business to them. There were also girls groomed and pressured into it. It isn't as straightforward as you think.

I wondered why this old thread has been re-opened, and it seems to be the same person, who doesn't agree with feminism.

Why is anyone responding.

There is no obligation to respond.

I have been away a few days and nearly all of the so called "active threads" are the same person pushing our buttons.

Dont indulge them!

Every moment you spend responding to someone who clear has not real interest in feminism is a moment you could instead be engaging with positive and proactive discussion.

That’s not how it works, legal prostitution is legal consensual sex that someone pays for. They are not being “raped” (look up the definition) and it’s one of the oldest professions in the world. I know people who do it because they enjoy sex, the moneys a bonus, two it can reward greater than minimum wage jobs. Only illegal prostitution is rape but if someone wishes to do it legally than they should be allowed. You’re spreading a whole lot of misinformation, it can be unsafe despite in legal countries however the women I know vet their clients to ensure they minimise the risk.
You wouldn’t know they do this in their private time unless they told you as they live very comfortable lives and aren’t addled with mental issues like you suggest. How many sex workers do you actually know?

I've never read so much utter shite. 😡

TheignT · 15/07/2026 20:58

Just to add I've seen some incredibly heartbreaking cases with girls who definitely needed saving but it isn't always easy to do. Doesn't change the fact that for some it's a choice.

Sounds to me like the girls in the “family business” were also groomed into it.

What exactly was the contribution of the father to that “family business”? Disgusting man.

Well he was a pimp, he did what pumps do. I think, from talking to them, they got jobs after school and decided working with mum was easier and better paid. Not a job I'd choose but then I wouldn't choose to work in an abattoir or a sewer. We aren't all the same and prostitutes aren't all the same either.

Well surely that's because they're not going to be making any money any more if they can't sell themselves - and as a very high percentage of women who work on the streets are also drug users they are going to have to find another way to fund their habit.

Of course they're going to want to be able to continue to prostitute themselves, they don't feel they have any other real options.

Ah yes all those women out there prostituting themselves for funsies.

Consent can't be bought, exchanging money is exploiting a vulnerability, if someone is only doing something out of financial desperation then they are not truly consenting. How many of these women were abused or suffered trauma, turned to drugs to cope and then ended up in prostitution to pay for their habit? What percentage grew up in care? What percentage have a boyfriend turned pimp who profits from it and who they believe loves them because they've never been loved or cared for in their lives?

Lots of answers here if you care to have a look - including that 80-95% of women involved in street prostitution are problematic drug users

https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/64627/html/

But yeah of course there are lots of them just doing it because they love it.

Very true. I used to work for the vice squad in a big city. I well remember the amazement of a group of women from local uni who were trying to make changes to legislation on prostitution, instead of being grateful the local prostitutes were up in arms against them.

Spoken like a true punter, completely ignoring the huge numbers of trafficked and coerced women of course, you even forgot in your excitment to pay lip service to that, like most manage to do.

Loads of female sex workers (past and current) want sex work decriminalised. Many of them work closely with charities that support female prisoners and volunteer themselves because many female prisoners have a history of sex work.

Decriminanlising sex work isn't a trans thing or whatever. It's a movement mostly led by natal women.

If you listen to active prostitutes of either sex, be aware that you are talking to a human being who is being raped for money regularly and who is in a mental state of terror, regardless of how they present. Because rape is what it boils down to. There is not one single little girl on planet earth who dreams of becoming a prostitute when she grows up. It is not a profession, not work, it's horrendous abuse, even more psychologically than physically. A lot of women - and girls (let's be honest) - in the trade cannot recognise this, because then they would break down. Or they had issues with their families growing up. Once they've made it out of the trade (and I'm counting porn and OnlyFans as well), this process may begin but it often results in suicide and also takes decades.

Former sex worker here. I disagree with you. It cannot ever truly be consensual when there’s such an imbalance. If I refused a booking or left a client dissatisfied I was “fined” by my “manager”. On top of paying them half of what I got. And that was one of the more reputable agencies.
All you MRAs telling us you know a prostitute who agrees with you. Of course she’ll agree if you pay her by the hour!

Also this is a zombie thread you resurrected to mansplain at women. I don’t think any of you even care if anyone’s listening as long as you can hear your own voice and read your own posts.

Readers should note these MRAs don’t spend any time/effort campaigning to make prostitution safer or better for women. After time spent in the trade many years ago I can tell you that what I want most of all is criminalisation of strangulation of anyone for any reason. You wouldn’t believe how many men just grabbed my neck and squeezed when they felt like it.

You ignorant prick.
You don’t understand the first thing about women, our bodies or our lived experience. Women love being prostitutes, yeah right.
How many choose it if they have other options?

Here you are on this thread supporting abuse of women’s bodies for money, and whining on other threads with a load of poorly thought out nonsense in support of men who want to cosplay as women.

You are a men’s rights activist.

Entirely fair. I may well have over-estimated the benefit to be had in listening to active female prostitutes.

To be clear though, when I said "I think it's important we listen to them" that is something that I think is true of any issue. I think it's important to listen to convicted grooming gang rapists, because I think that it might be possible to learn things that enable us to fight grooming gangs, or it might help people realize how evil these men are and that we should punish them more severely. Or there may be some other benefit I have not thought of.

I did not mean to apply that we should take the words of vulnerable or mentally damaged people at face value and do what they say.

As many women have been saying for a long time the trans lobby is a pro men's sexual rights movement. I'm very concerned that unless women keep on pushing back against them about where we end up, what will they campaign to legalise next? What's the end game? Is there anything men shouldn't be allowed to do to women and children?

The groups I mentioned are made up of and represent both former sex workers as well as active ones.

I think what you and Ash Regan are trying to say is "listen to sex workers but only the ones who agree with my bill". Evidenced by to date AR is still unwilling to meet with sex worker groups like Scotland4Decrim but is happy to meet with the Christian Institute and show them around Scottish Parliament to talk about her bill.

It's funny how on a board full of women trying to protect women and children the problem often appears to be or have links to "trans". Only it's not funny at all, it is depressingly predictable.

It seems to me that men and women who sell sex, and men and women who claim to be trans, are similar. They are two groups who should be listened to, but whom are ultimately very vulnerable and often very very damaged, and who very often need society to tell them what is good for them, and not have society simply green-lighting everything they say they want.
