Full of admiration. The word legend gets thrown about... but for some people it's maybe not even enough

They may be afraid to change the law. Trying to change it might bring more focus on it, and most would see a change for what it is - a blatant roll back of women’s rights and protections

It is odd that the reaction from TRA is that the interpretation of the law is wrong, rather than the law not fit for what they want.

I dont think MP who are sympathetic to TRA really understand any of it or cannot argue for the laws TRA want.

I don't think I have seen any Labour MPs, or anyone else for that matter, campaign for a new Equality Act that gives trans people the rights they want. Which is surely the correct reaction to a law you don't like: campaign to repeal it and write a new one, not just ignore it and/or gripe about how the judges are evil for interpreting it in a way you don't like.

Pre-GE (so before the SC decision), my now Labour MP was very clear that the EA required no amendment to it (I was asking for amendment to clarify that sex meant biological sex) and they were proud of it. I imagine this was the party line when the lack of clarity suited them.

It would be a bit of a u turn to suggest that it now does need amending. However, this is the current Labour government. Nothing a good pivot won't sort! 🙄

It's such an Americanised attitude to politics. Win points by pointing out constantly how you disagree with the law as it stands. But don't blame the legislature that made the law, blame the evil unelected judges. And don't, by any means, take any action to actually change anything.

It's pathetic.

Quite, the Unions were vehemently opposed to equal pay for women back in the day.

'“I got a lot of threats,” she says. “I had to change my way to work. I walked in different directions, to different Tube stations. Because you’re afraid that somebody will flip and attack you, knife you, do whatever.”
When Labour came to power, ministers initially suggested that her contract was likely to come to an end in December 2024. She decided not to fight it, not least because of her cancer diagnosis.

“I was extremely ill and going through chemotherapy and still hanging on in there doing a three-day-a-week job,” she says. “I thought well, if I’m not going to be around for very much longer it doesn’t really matter whether I get renewed or not. I’ll just do this job to the best of my ability until events overtake themselves. And I just plodded on.”'

I'm in total awe. May we all develop that level of tenacity. So glad she is recovered.

She's an amazing woman and she clearly has no intention of keeping quiet about labours cowardice over this issue

We were so lucky to have her fight for women’s and girls rights when so many female politicians and ordinary women have rushed to smugly affirm themselves as the virtuous ones. Happy to leave their sisters facing biologically intact males in female rape centres and female prisons and female hospital wards and of course taking the podium away from regular ordinary women athletes. Big thank you to her from this female.

It is lovely to hear from her, after years of good work in a role that wasn't really compatible with speaking out. Good to know that she will be active as a crossbench peer.

And working in that difficult role while dealing with advanced ovarian cancer! What an impressive person.

Hope she enjoys this new phase of her life.

Given she's completely clueless about the legal implications of a hasty approval of government regulations, she certainly couldn't have left a moment sooner….

Of course had she had to put her own money on the line for the inevitable legal fall out rather than the tax payer's she'd be at a snails pace…

@IwantToRetire I didn't know that. She's very determined and it's amazing she was able to work on such an important piece of legislation.
