There's a discussion going on on Reddit about what it's like being a transwoman in the UK but outside of London. The majority of posters say that they have experienced no, or almost no negative incidents - over a period of years. At worst, maybe the odd "microaggression" of a double take by someone. A lot of them say they feel that the huge majority of people don't care whether they're trans or not, and that they've had support from their local community. This seems very different from the experience that a lot of women have - experiencing sexual harassment pretty frequently, and often feeling physically unsafe. I didn't get the sense that transwomen are in fact some of the most vulnerable people in the UK.

@murasaki It's different, though. I don't know what the technical term is, but mumsnet is one of those old style forums where posts appear one after the other.

With Reddit, instead, posts are hierarchical.
You make a post. I reply (level 1). If someone replies to me, their post appears under min (level 2). If someone replied to the original post, it's a different level 1 reply.

These various levels end up nested one into the other. Those with more votes are pushed up, those with fewer votes are hidden and collapsed.

Supporters say that reddit subs get too much traffic and a mumsnet-like model wouldn't work.
Detractors point out the toxicity and the groupthink

Yes. I can see how originally it was designed to try and encourage engagement.

But when you consider the dopamine hit of people up-voting - and the negative emotions when someone down-votes - it was inevitable that people would shy away from disagreeing with the majority view. And unsurprising that increasingly aggressive and abusive posts and moderation become accepted as the norm, as those behaving this way have been emboldened because nobody dares deviate from the accepted group-think.

I will always remember when the GC sub got taken down.

Reddit's downvoting system can be quite toxic. It certainly favours an echo chamber.

You say X in a sub where everyone supports Y, and, even if you don't get banned, your comment will get downvoted and therefore hidden

This system of voting encourages group think and radicalisation

You can see it on the big topics (politics, religion, etc) but also on mundane stuff like one brand of car vs another, or one brand of phone vs another. Crazy

Each sub has different rules and automod bots. So you could get banned for saying something in one sub, but another sub would not ban you for saying the same.

It is an echo chamber - but I think there are cracks in the walls. I can't remember which sub I saw it on - it was a discussion about the Upton case a couple of months ago.

There were two or three comments talking about biological sex. They were very much the tiny minority, and got down-voted to oblivion with the usual abuse about being bigoted fascists.

But one response to this stuck in my mind. It pointed out that the posters in the sub were an echo chamber, because they were used to the deletion and banning of almost every GC comment. And because they weren't used to seeing any dissent, they were falling into the trap of believing that their view is representative of real life.

They could down vote away, but it wouldn't change reality. If they were to ask people to answer honestly, without fear of abuse or retaliation, they'd likely be shocked at the real responses they'd get - because most people do not believe that people can change their sex.

It's a tiny step - but I don't think that comment thread would have been allowed to run a couple of years ago.

I’m amazed it’s taken you so long, I was banned about three years ago.

I’m actually surprised there’s any women with GC views remaining on that site, I had a look post-Olympic ban announcement a few weeks ago to see if there were any dissenters remaining and they seemed few and far between.

It is the ultimate echo chamber on the topic - see some profiles of the moderators there who all seem to be trans or non-binary furries and it all makes sense.
