What is Riley Gaines hiding? We investigated…

This podcast appeared in my feed today via an affiliated show… I know it is naive but it’s still hard to believe how blinkered - and unbearably smug the US liberal wing is on this. This is rubbish ( from the ‘Center for Investigative Reporting’, which I now wouldn’t trust to tell me if it was raining), but still enlightening… wondered if anyone else had heard it.

A six month dig to discredit Gaines - we’re not supposed to notice that everyone they’re trying to gotcha in this won’t dignify any of it - that finds her hiding (spoiler alert) nothing?

Previous support of a lesbian teammate? Can I have a bit more detail?

I respect Gaines' courage on this issue a great deal.

I'd always thought she was probably a hard-core evangelical (judging by the information we have on her beliefs and the way she uses their kinds of phrases like 'spiritual warfare') who thinks women ought to obey their husbands ('complememtarianism' as they call it) and that gay people are fine as long as they stay celibate.

If she's not quite as strict as that, I'm very glad.

Not sure if I might be misremembering now. At one point - I think from the teammate with the disguised voice - they expressed an extra disappointment in Gaines because she had previously been supportive of a lesbian teammate (or they might have said ‘queer’ which means anything). As if objecting to Thomas meant she must hate the whole community, which is a wild accusation they didn’t bother to think any harder about.

Unless they were referring to Thomas all along, in which case I got the wrong end of the stick.

You don’t think ‘reverse racism’ was involved in how the victims of grooming gangs were chosen? People declare that white people can’t be the victim of racism because they have power, but that is not always the case and increasingly not the case in many communities.

The grooming gangs also abused Sikh, Hindu and Muslim girls in their own community. Different motives involved for all of these, but anti white racism was definitely a factor for the white victims.

Where did I liken her to Kirk? It wasn’t me that did that.

But since you brought him up, yes, she is like Charlie Kirk. She was a friend, colleague and associate of his. She travelled around college campuses early on giving speeches with TPUSA arranged by Kirk, and the mode of her media operation of very similar to Kirk’s.

No, she's not. Kirk started off moderate but got way more inflammatory and provocative. He quoted Anita Bryant on gay people a year or so back.

Gaines has stayed sensible mostly.

I think her activism on behalf of women’s sports is great. The Trumpism, anti-immigration, nationalism, evangelism, mom-is-best messaging - not so much. This is what she is being paid for. And yes, I would consider some of it misinformation, and a good amount of it propaganda.

Mom is best? What do you mean and where did she say this? Advocating SAHMs pr something else?

She is a well-paid pundit and lobbyist and this could perhaps be made clearer. It isn’t altruism that is driving her.

bloody hell. She was pretty much cancelled. How the fuck, especially now she has a baby?, is she supposed to earn a living.

Why should she be altruistic? should she live on air and rainbows?

The fact is that the idiots simply cannot countenance anything, any idea or anyone who doesn't 100% agree with them. This is absolutely batshit.

So she is a right-wing conservative christian woman. I probably disagree with her on 90% of political issues. That doesn't make her awful it makes us different.

Likening her to Kirk is provocative.

Exactly, Gaines never made statements like 'MLK did nothing good' or that Michelle Obama only got where she has because of her race. She's wasn't a shock jock who openly wanted to emulate Rush Limbaugh.

Gaines seems very patient considering the shit she's been through.

Aren’t you doing the same ‘guilt by association’ here by blaming the left?

What Torres uncovers here isn’t absurd. RG does have GOP platforms, a regular spot on Fox, is on the lucrative speaking circuit, has some odd Christian nationalist and anti-immigration views, and is a vocal Trump supporter. That might sit okay with you, but not me. I’m fine with her campaigning for keeping men out of women’s sport based on her experience, even if some memories of that experience may vary, but it is the political crusading from the results that is troubling.

Can you give a link on the Christian nationalist views?

Howse at least mixes it up a bit. Usually on a Riley Gaines thread, we get hundreds of posts along the lines of "I'm as GC as they come, but here are 50 reasons why you should hate Riley Gaines"

I don't know what it is about RG, but she seems to positively enrage 'progressives' who then have a compulsion to explain why she's a liar and a bad faith actor.

They would rather be advocates for flashers' rights than admit that RG with her sinful thoughts should be entitled to a single sex changing room.

That is why they will lose.

She's evangelical and they can seem a bit over-zealous to me. Talk of spiritual warfare makes me queasy.

Evangelicals also tend often to think women should obey they husbands (complementarianism as they call it), be very anti abortion, think gay people should stay celibate and various other things it's not surprising people on FWR would disagree with, not just woke progressives.

However, using this to discredit Gaines' GC heroism is disgusting. Supporting her on one issue doesn't mean you support everything or can't acknowledge her bravery and good work.

Also, to be fair to Gaines, while she seems on the conservative side of evamgelicalism, we don't know her views on any of the above apart from being very anti abortion.

Shortshriftandlethal · 27/11/2025 09:24

I no longer read Howes ' posts, but demonisation and character assasination is another method used to destroy 'the enemy'. It's probably because she's blonde, Republican and church going or something?

She seems a bit woo-woo evangelical with her talk of 'spiritual warfare' but that's not a crime, though too much zeal always makes me a bit wary. But then I'm a quiet Anglican myself.

I'd be interested if she also goes in for the 'complementarian' (obey your husband) and 'gay people stay celibate' bits of evangelicalism but she's never spoken on those things afaik.

Did they mention the right wing pin-up girl calendar she posed for ? 🤣

I can't really fault her for doing anything else bad... She seems tough & I doubt she'll care about this podcast but the Flack she's getting just makes a section of the Dems look worse & worse.

It is completely fundamental to their whole ‘investigation’, and there in how they wholeheartedly commit to the pretence of Lia Thomas being a woman no different to the rest of the team. The whole podcast drips with disdain for Gaines.

Interesting. Lot's of red flags about Gaines.

Gaines complained initially about competing with trans women but as she was deployed as a right wing political operative during Trump's campaign her story 'evolved' into one about sexual assault for being in the presence of an exposed trans women in the swim change rooms. All while ignoring the environment of sexual assault & abuse of her team mates at the time by her coach who she lauded as her close friend & mentor.

Gaines only claimed much later Thomas was exposing herself in the change rooms but her teams mates claim she was wrapped in a towel changing away from the others.

Whatever you think about women in sport, this appears to be another example of trans women being weaponised as a political cudgel rather than any real concern about protecting women given sexual abuse of women in sport is a common problem.

Other athletes have said that Williams changed in front of them.

We don’t need men to tell us how to be feminists thank you.

But we do, or our poor little pink fuzzy brains will make us do it all wrong! And we might offend the people who really matter, the men.

that is why i only quoted part of your post.

Likening her to Charlie Kirk is a dogwhistle and it is menacing.

She is fighting to keep men out of women's sports. That is where she and i intersect. The rest of the things she believes? not so much. She can be friends with who she likes. I can argue against pretty much all her beliefs with why i believe they harm women, and still support her on the one thing that she believes that i also believe.

Because i am a fully rounded adult who doesn't say "that's literal violence" et al when someone doesn't allign 100% with my beliefs.

Are you replying to the correct person?

Or Queensland . There is a Manly that is suburb of Greater Brisbane

So being from Manly or simply being Manly is is a normal state of affairs that could apply to anyone.

It's possible that the pp isn't male and is a Sydneysider. Maybe the pp happens to live in the suburb of Manly.

If we can’t have a laughing response because it could be used sarcastically, could we at least get a douche one to use where it’s needed.

I'm a little baffled by MN deleting my post saying I believe Howseitgoin is a man when many other posts saying the same thing are allowed to stand.
Oh well. Perhaps it was the way I said it.

He claims not to be male but then also claims he claims to live in Australia… He has recently been claiming to have a husband although thus far I haven’t seen him claiming to have any children but I could have missed it as it’s impossible to keep up with all his posts.

And to think this situation could have been avoided if the man involved had respected women and not used the female changing room, whether he flashed anyone or not.

NRTFT and I’m sure it’s already been mentioned…
…but anyone who thinks it’s possible to stay under a towel while changing into and out of a contemporary competitive racesuit (a highly specialist tightly fitted compression garment) is a moron whose only swimming experience likely involved arm bands on a Bank Holiday at Butlins.

Riley Gains would be completely unknown if Lia Thomas hadn’t gatecrashed Riley’s swim league and cut such a hulking figure on the podium that the image went viral internationally.
If anyone has an issue with Gains making the best of a bad situation and using her 15 minutes of accidental fame as springboard to becoming a Republican media commentator then they really need to take it up with Lia.

If Lia had just stayed in his lane (the men’s competition) Riley-the-Media-Figure would never have been born.
