Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

To find it heartening that despite so many famous people being anti JKR, their are still so many who are prepared to work on HP?

The end credits on the full cast audio takes 13 minutes. Hugh Laurie, Carl Prekopp, Mark Addy, Indira Varma.....and so many many names!

Then the TV series. Nick Frost, Warwick Davies, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Katherine Parkinson and (my favourite) Daniel Rigby.

I feel that the actors and crew are saying that they agree with her (or at least, dont disagree), without actually saying that they agree, if you see what I mean.

There must be some some of alert that goes on Reddit and similar whenever there's a thread on this board which mentions JKR in the title. We always get a few women hating TRA's on threads but the ones on the JKR threads are a whole different level of spittle flecked unhinged misogyny.

Sorry lads, she's too rich and successful to cancel and while you seethe about it, she's standing up for women's legal right to single sex services and spaces. You don't (and never had the right) to invade services and spaces for females. Women said no.

We're not your mummies, human shields, support humans or validation resources.

(And in terms of the PP, more and more people, including actors, are saying to the TRA's having arm flailing tantrums when they try to cancel them 'your grift has ended. We're not bothered about your footstamping'. The ones still wanging on about 'most vulnerable and oppressed' look like credulous fools)

I would maintain civility but can't imagine maintaining a close relationship with a friend who didn't have any empathy for human rights violations. That would be a very bright red flag of a problematic future in my experience. Lack of empathy tends to be a deal breaker in friendships.

But I suspect the very nature of acting requires empathy for those "who know not what they do" & that's perhaps why Fiennes, Knightly & Laurie haven't turned away from JKR.

Edited

Are you saying JJR has no empathy for human rights violations as it's the absolute opposite case. She strongly supports women's rights .

Yes, you are going into a logistical nightmare again as with toilet policing. Good luck with that.

Edited

So your solution is.....? What?

Do away with all safeguarding because it's a "logistical nightmare"?

nauticant · 25/11/2025 16:18

If only there was some self-control that transwomen could exercise over where they go and some sense of responsibilty ...

sanluca · 25/11/2025 16:07

I didn't mention toilets, @godtierKaren. I know transactivists like to discuss toilets as this is where many women will still be kind to a feminine transwoman.

So mixed sex changing rooms for children supervised by male adults: ok or not?

godtierKaren · 25/11/2025 16:03

sanluca · 25/11/2025 15:59

In a correct world where everybody is safeguarded, scouts leaders, coaches and priests are never alone with children in their care when it comes to changing and sleeping arrangements. Changing and sleeping is single sex as well.

Not just to protect the children, but also to protect the adults against any accusations.

See where I am going with this?

sanluca · 25/11/2025 16:03

Also, for @godtierKaren, one of the main reasons for wanting single sex spaces and sports is that women will self exclude if they have to share with men they don't know. It is direct discrimination based on sex for women and girls as you are barring from using your service that is avaible to men and transwomen.

The hockey club around where I live being a good example of this

In other words, consistency is a thing.

You could probably say the same for racists & misogynists feeling 'relieved' to finally let their 'hair down' in this post respect Trump world.

You can always rely on gender critical feminists to think there aren't any consequences for women in general for their pet carve out.

What? Can someone translate this for me, I'm not fluent in gobbledygook.

Ah so we should consistently apply safeguarding and not give any group a free pass (as was done in the past with priests etc).
One of the basics of safeguarding is single sex spaces when people will in a state of undress.

BlueLegume · 25/11/2025 15:45

Yes @nauticant I have listened to all of Tanya’s podcasts along with the Seen in Journalism ones.

nauticant · 25/11/2025 15:40

Looking at your post@BlueLegumeI wonder if you're familiar with the This Isn't Working podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@This-Isnt-Working

Just in case you're not, you should have a look, I think you'd find much of interest there.

As far as Katie Dolatowski goes, that a small minority of male teachers, priests, coaches, scout leaders are pedophiles doesn't mean we should ban males from working with children.

In other words, a price worth paying. You've just gotta take your chances, girls.

Go on then, tell us, what are the consequences of not letting men who are pretending to be women use female only spaces?

Still waiting for you to respond to my earlier question about Katie Dolatowski, who raped a 12yo girl in a female only supermarket toilet, as you said that men who are pretending to be women and women face the same risks in such places?

The context here is cancel culture no longer being an issue & the implications of a free for all…which has consequences on how women are spoken about in terms of misogyny being more acceptable too.

BlueLegume · 25/11/2025 15:30

There is the sensible approach to much of these arguments particularly in the workplace. We have seen that ‘bringing your whole self to work’ simply did not improve productivity. We tried being kind and inclusive but ended up at times pandering to pronouns etc and being berated for misgendering. You cannot change sex. Men cannot become women and women cannot become men.

Gender affirming care is a misnomer. If a 12 year old said they wanted to try heroin we would stop them. We wouldn’t let them dabble and see how things turned out.

The workplace ultimately needs to make a profit so I would suggest in the private sector making money trumps others demands and that DEI in that sector has not been fully implemented. Meritocracy trumps so the company makes profit. Hire the best people get the best results.

In the public sector DEI seems to have morphed into the opposite of what it set out to do. We have nurses fighting NHS trusts at Employment Tribunals not because they have not done their jobs properly but because a man who says he is a woman is offended by them wanting their right to a single sex space.

I would really like a man who identifies as a woman but just gets on with life to perhaps speak to these activists who seem to have a huge amount of time on their hands and ask what it is they actually want to achieve.

What are the bad consequences for women of recognising women as a distinct category of human being?

There must be a lot of people working in the arts who, even though they were sympathetic to demands over one type of "justice" or another, are now, more than 5 years down the line, utterly sick to death of feeling they're walking on eggshells. Including some who think that JKR is a real meany.

blubberball · 25/11/2025 14:38

I know someone working in this series. They're just there to do a job and go home. They don't give a fuck about JKR's political views. I think most people working on this project feel the same way. This is set to be a 10 year project, generating incomes for many people and families. It's going to pay them to just go to work, do their jobs, and be professional

Greyskybluesky · 25/11/2025 14:25

Oh yes, let's not forget to both-sides it 🙄

Freebus · 25/11/2025 14:09

I'm sure not all of those actors will agree 100% with JKR, nor would I expect them to. Some may agree with much but not all of what she says.

Some may just want to take politics out of doing their job.

I'm sure many are fed up with being expected to have a stance on the issue by aggressive ppl on either side.

I’m not sure that’s true, because she’s alive and active and there’s ongoing media coverage - with some ‘journalists’ continuing to poke at the matter, as with the recent interview with Grint (afaik there was no particular reason for this interview even, he was just turning on some Xmas lights).

I don't know, I think if you asked the average person buying some Harry Potter Lego for Christmas what they thought about JK Rowling’s opinions I honestly think they would look at you like you were mad. Or going into Harry Potter studio tour and drinking some butter beer, they would wonder what on earth you were talking about.
Most people probably pay more attention to football results than this discussion, and which actors are in a Harry Potter production will be as profoundly affecting to them as who’s in celebrity jungle. I think the actors have realised it is only an unhinged minority going on about it and have readjusted where their own best interests lie commercially.
