Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The Rest is Entertainment

Marina Hyde (Guardian columnist) and Richard Osman's YouTube podcast The Rest is Entertainment did an episode on Tuesday about the Davie resignation along with other items.
They both discussed the Trump non saga and also mentioned the gender critical comments made in the memo/letter from Prescott.
They both made mild and sensible comments about how "a lot of people" would have been upset by certain things such as victims of male assault being made to refer to their attacker with female pronouns.
Obviously there were the usual "transphobe" claimants in the comments, but I was surprised they touched on it at all especially as Marina writes for the Guardian.
I'd love to include the link, but the episode isn't in the videos list with all the others. It's possible they had to take it down because overshadowing the TRA's were the people who think the BBC is the work of the devil. So there could have been a lot of comments that might have caused the removal 🤔

I am almost certain MH made a comment on that podcast only a few weeks ago which suggested she thought women who didn’t want men in their spaces were simply being dramatic.

In all honesty I find it difficult to square the universal praise MH receives. I would love to know how many phones she did or did not hack back in the day when she was pals with Piers Morgan.

I think Marina is just up to date with the “vibe shift” generally as she is on social media a lot and follows its culture. She’s just blowing with the current winds.

Good point. Her head was not over the parapet earlier, was it? Especially as she has a column in the Grauniad.

Still, it's all progress.

I listened to the episode
it was 29 mins and 30 seconds about TV / gossip / trivia.
30 seconds (in fact less!) on this issue

Was just ansering a PP's question, as they seemed confused.

As for the episode, to pronounce such a literal genocidal heresy would have got MH cancelled not that long ago. So it's worth commenting on.

What’s your thread asking or wanting to discuss?

GnomeComforts · 13/11/2025 14:17

I heard it too OP. Even this time last year, I don't think that that kind of discussion would have been possible. Well done Marina.

Marina Hyde wrote this article (linked below) for the Guardian and I was taken aback to read this straightforward sentence:

The fact is, the three mistakes that form the bulk of Michael Prescott’s explosive leaked memo about impartiality – the Panorama edit, issues with coverage of the transgender issue and bias in the BBC Arabic service – happened and are bad.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/nov/11/bbc-tim-davie-donald-trump-nigel-farage-boss

I think there's a greater chance MH will become more GC after the TRA pile-on for her mild comments so far.

I've always liked marina Hyde and her articles and I remember Hadley Freeman spoke fondly of her as well.

I kind of hope that marina goes through the same epiphany process as Roisin Murphy did two years ago.

I think it is progress that the presenters on this podcast have acknowledged the BBC has flaws. They have both (IMHO) been unthinking supporters of the beeb in previous podcasts, devoting large parts of several broadcasts to praise of the beeb. It is interesting to contrast their comments with those from the, "No Fear. No Favour. Seen in Journalism" podcast.

I was a huge BBC supporter. Grew up with Radio 4 in the 70s and 80s. It was my “go to” media outlet for news, analysis and entertainment. Not anymore. The last 10 years have changed that. I rarely tune into Radio 4 now and wouldn’t trust any of its news programmes if I did. Seeing the bias over transgender reporting; the blatant targeting of kids with programmes like, “Just a Girl” and articles like this one Trans and a triplet: Coming out brought our family closer together - BBC News; and the complete lack of concern over the erosion of women’s rights has given me a deep distaste for the whole institution. I would not shed any tears over its demise.

I suspect MH has been ensconced in a self-righteous Guardian bubble. She was quite sneery a week or so ago about the Times, recommending that people be aware they have a political agenda in their reporting while failing completely to acknowledge the paper she writes for has an opposite and (again IMHO) far more pervasive and biased agenda.

I remember a girls' comic story from my 1960s childhood - Bunty maybe? - where a twin girl was unhappy and didn't want to go to her birthday party with her sister. Her mother couldn't understand the problem. Both girls were identical, same long blonde haircut etc., and Mum made sure they always had the same things, but one girl was happy and pretty and the other was miserable and jealous. To cheer her up Mum took the unhappy girl to the hairdressers. The resolution of the story showed both girls happily blowing out candles on their shared birthday cake at their shared birthday party - but the once-unhappy girl now had her hair cut in a super-smart short pixie bob.

"Trans and a triplet" looks like the exact same story updated for the modern world.

Multiplebroc · 13/11/2025 13:59

Not a chance with children, as MH has, would i start espousing my views on this issue. Not. A. Chance.

I don't think they would discuss these topics on depth either. Thankfully as nice to have a space that isn't too serious.

Exactly

i listen to TRIE when i want to zone out and listen to a bit of media / tv gossip. And ideally I’d like it to stay like that!

I do get this but some celebs have no qualms about entering other toxic debates ie Brexit, Trump, Gaza. Women's rights seemed a step too far even for those who self identify as feminists. They didn't want to get involved as trans rights was seen in their world as the latest 'trendy' cause.

I find my kids are fairly captured but equally are hesitant about female sports. They both really dislike JKR now; I find that sad but not surprising.

I feel their ideology must be based on never having been preyed upon sexually by absolutely piles of 💩 men from when I was about 9.
flashers,
cat calls,
boy friends,
A male family friend who actually abused me
bosses whose sexual language and harassment was the norm and constant

all this life experience means that I KNOW that abusers manipulate all boundaries from personal experience and also because women around hardly ever had your back because they were covering theirs.

I love my kids so I tread carefully and no longer say what I really think.

I also think I lost a job partly because I didn’t want she/her in my signature! The young managers were so witch hunty at the time.

The times have really shifted at least in this country and we can discuss this even if not in our homes!

How old are your kids?
Do you have any daughters? @wildfellhall

you may find the fight to retain women's rights dull, in which case why hang around the FWR board?

I agree with pp that i like to think that people in the public eye who don't say TWAW out loud, are privately sex realistic. (ETA: but want to a) keep their jobs and b) not have nutjobs targetting their families)

I read some of the spotify comments.

If i understand correctly the TRA crybabies there who are wittering on about how it was their "safe space" and they are shook up that the trans issue was mentioned can't listen to anything at all that doesn't constantly either reaffirm them or ignore the fact that women have rights? How is saying "there have been complaints that male rapists who claim a female identity were referred to under their biological sex" an attack on the existence of trans people?

Edited

I wouldn’t select the “Rest is Entertainment“ if my desire was to discuss the “fight to retain women’s rights” .

GeneralPeter · 13/11/2025 12:58

I’ve had Marina Hyde down as GC, or at least trans-sceptical, for a long while. I was a bit disappointed she didn’t say more in the recent episode, but I don’t think she owes that to anyone necessarily.

MH’s politics are most notable by the little things she doesn’t say. The little affirmations on progressive issues and the little dismissals on conservative ones. A secret Tory perhaps?

(tbh I don’t know why I find this surprising: she’s an aristocrat who started her career at the Sun, after all)

Brefugee · 13/11/2025 12:57

I am completely baffled - especially since the leaked document specifically says the TRA agenda was promoted over women's issues, and that GC voices were stifled - that the TRAs are all bleating (BlueSky is unbearable right now) that the only people the BBC bash are Gazans and Trans (from comments on Marina's Grauniad column) and that the BBC has a clear anti trans agenda.

They are fucking delusional (useful) idiots. It is stunning how stupid they are.

I know what you're saying, but I really don't think we can compare Brexit or even Gaza with regard to the flak that people, especially women get for speaking out.I wouldn't want to get all those rape and death threats. I'm not even 'out' on my personal social media, which upsets me and make me feel guilty, but I just can't cope with the hammering I'd get (not to mention possible ramifications at work).

I don't blame women in the media.

Its the TRAs we should be blaming for no debate, not other women.

Edited

I blame media organisations such as The Guardian where MH works as much as the TRA's for shutting down debate, leading to the nonsense we have had to put up with for years.

deadpan · 13/11/2025 12:34

I didn't say because it's trump it's fine. I said he was impeached for the speech because it was found to invite, so the representation of the speech on the programme didn't change the overall context

There are still GC writers at the Guardian e.g. Susanna Rustin. Journalists there aren't required to swear an oath of fealty to the Trans Cult.

Sean Ingle has also been strong in the sports section.

I listened to it and was a bit annoyed they didn't give more time to the trans aspect. And i was very annoyed they were literally saying "poor bloke that's why he got paid half a million a year"

My view? Hyde is probably a sex realist but she works at the Guardian and has a nice upper middle class life (and husband at BBC) so never discusses it at all.

RO knows what he has to say to remain a popular author (although with his profile he won't get cancelled anyway) and probably knows the truth but it is not worth the loss in sales/gigs to be out and proud.

Where can i see comments about the programme? I listen to it on Spotify.

I can see the comments under the episode in Spotify.

Richard Osman was on HIGNFY the week of the SC ruling. His discomfiture when it was discussed was a picture to behold while he said nothing.
