It might be my algorithms or scheduling of presenters but there seem to have been a lot of men being interviewed/interviewing about BBC bias and/or coverage of gender/womens issues. Fewer women.

I

It’s not algorithms, it’s what they do. Feature, not bug.

No one suggested closing the Metropolitan Police down when one of it's members of staff rated and murdered a woman but we want the BBC gone because Gregg Wallace is a proper.

FranticSemantics · 10/11/2025 08:43

I'm really sad. The BBC is an institution that I generally hold in high regard, like the NHS and Parliament. They're not perfect but their work is generally good and life would be a lot worse without them.

I just wanted them to report accurately, as they have done for decades, and not allow bad behaviour. I didn't want the whole organisation flushed down the toilet. The BBC has powerful enemies, who want to see it's market share reduced so private, profit-making for shareholders businesses can move in.

It was once suggested that the BBC Good Food website be closed down and all 10,000 recipes deleted. This was because the free resource was taking market share away from other paid-for cooking resources. These are the BBC's enemies - people who will make huge profits from it's removal.

I wonder where Davie stands on the gender issue. Didn't know he was a Tory. But I think the proximate cause of his resignation was probably the Trump stuff. On which I actually sympathise with the Beeb. It can't be easy editing DTs crazed , rambling gibberish. Besides, when you get to the nub of it , everything they broadcast was true. In normal times they would have dismissed this glitch with an apology - which you never get from eg Fox or GBnews.

But they are shit scared of the Trump government and who isn't ? Maybe China....

Perhaps the political climate influenced the decision, perhaps Davie was just fed up with it all.

However, I suspect the BBC's main competitor is not any terrestrial news channel but online videos, which may or may not have any relationship to actual events.

I'm am sure many posters remember that Guardian ad about seeing both sides where the man isn't mugging the woman but saving her from something (can't remember what), - we know that video is not completely reliable. However at the very minimum the BBC has to be able to give the impression that they are not using editing to 'massage' the truth.

I've just been watching some of the morning news shows and they still don't get it. It's not all about the Trump speech.

Institutional and systemic bias. It’s hard for that to be understood from within.

“While mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong,” she said.

Turness can't even resign without lying.

A few years ago, the BBC were quite happy to say they had over 400 trans people working for them.

I don't know if they're happy to say that now.

But in terms of bias, I imagine it's huge.

I know people working at the BBC.

There is a culture of fear but this doesn't mean there isn't a lot of employees who don't believe in the concept of the BBC too.

We know that ultimately it comes down to recognising this and that there are a lot of people at the BBC who do still believe in the ideals of the organisation and almost feel betrayed by what's it's become.

It's a weird one because you do have people who passionately believe but they are also caught up with needing to pay bills too.

It needs a good clear out and refocusing but I do think it's still possible. But the window for that is running out.

You’ve been around long enough to remember this, Red. It would be interesting to know the direction of travel since 2018 in staffing. Add all those staff to the parents who have transitioned their children and if it’s as bad as I fear, it seems unlikely they’ll find a way out, because they are too deeply embedded.

Goodness knows, I wish they would. I actively want to pay the licence fee partly because not watching any live TV is a pain in the arse and partly because the BBC used to be a truly great asset to the UK.

Tone deaf and completely in denial….

A minister has claimed the BBC can “absolutely” still be trusted despite the bias scandal of the past week.

On whether people could still have faith in the corporation, Louise Sandher-Jones, the veterans minister, told Times Radio: “Yes, absolutely. I think it puts out a huge, huge output every day across a huge, huge range of topics and I know many people go to it for their first point of call.”

Pressed on criticisms levelled at the BBC over its coverage of Donald Trump, the war in Gaza and the trans row, Ms Sandher-Jones added: “Of course, we have to make sure a broad range of views is reflected.

“I know in my work as MPs I speak to many people, I know there’s a huge, huge range of opinions ... On the whole the BBC is one of the most trusted institutions across the country.”

I wonder if she was invited on to discuss something else and just didn't really know what she was talking about?

The problem with the Panorama programme was not that it needed to include a broad range of views, but that the editing distorted the truth.

I think it’s three things

Trump edits
Trans activists running amok
The Gaza stuff

Definitely the Gaza stuff. They've hooked onto the Trump business because it was poor editing and no-one did anything about it, presumably because everyone 'hates' Trump so there would be no kick-back (unlike the Gaza mess). That trans activists are also all over the BBC seems to have gone back under the radar - for the moment. But it's a bad moment for this to happen with Badenoch saying we should end the licence fee. The BBC needs to return to its core purpose: to educate, inform and entertain and do so impartially (and with a bit less kow-towing to popular culture and the trans agenda and nothing else, too).

More to the point - there is an enormous public appetite right now for good journalism and holding power to account. If just someone would do it.

The demand would be there for a subscription model.

Leadership. If only it were that simple.

The bias is deep-rooted - if you cannot see that now, then I don’t know what to say, frankly.

Starmer would be quite happy to get rid of Nandy. No10 have been briefing against her for months. She's blamed for cabinet leaks. If only the poor silly man knew that almost all of his cabinet is leaking.

But that wouldn't solve anything. The BBC is one of those institutions like the Royal Family or the Labour Party, it runs on sentiment and on people who grew up with it not being able to imagine life without it, but it's drifted far away from why people were loyal to it.

Out of those institutions, William might be ruthless enough to save the monarchy, but the others are too big and cumbersome to course correct. The BBC can't even apologise without adding a lot of spin about how it's really got nothing to apologise for.

The BBC isn't state funded (although part comes from licence payers)

A licence fee is a tax on owning a television set. Non-payment remains a criminal offence.

Edited

I think its actually a tax on watching live broadcasts on any channel.

If you watch live sport on Amazon Prime on your phone, you need a licence fee.

I disagree and am more optimistic. But it will take courageous leadership and and unfailing commitment to journalism.

There are journalists out there who are evangelical enough about that to pull it off if they get the chance.

Spin off/cut out news and politics.

The bias is systemic and institutional - it will never be able to reform.

It has been buried under several long running cases of bias - we are here for a reason.

Edited

It really is. I listened to a top BBC journo give a talk recently. It is both these things.

When distortion and misinformation is thought to be and is presented as fact there’s a major issue with a state broadcaster.

I think what gets me, is that it's been a long time coming in terms of this coming to a head.

A lot of people have seen this coming for a long long time. And have warned.

Whether the BBC survives or not depends on whether it can work out the cognitive dissonance or not. If it can't, it will fail.

I love the BBC. I really think it's great. We still shouldn't underestimate it's value to us as a nation. It has a huge amount of soft power throughout the world. It remains important.

We should be worried though - Mr Bates versus the Post Office was made by ITV. It wasn't a commercial enterprise. It was hugely important in the UK but it couldn't make money overseas. It was a economic white elephant. We have ITV in the process of considering a bid from Sky to take over at the same time as this BBC crisis.

So we should all be fully aware of what's at risk here - and the danger of ending up with a situation like the US where every channel is a source of mind numbing rot that has no interest whatsoever in the concept of the public interest.

Spin off/cut out news and politics.

From yesterday morning.

Nandy said she retained confidence in the handling of the issue by Shah and Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general, who has yet to speak about the matter.

Nandy not looking too good is she?

Nandy thinks men can become women. And that anyone who says differently should shut up.

This is all you need to know.
