Another data scrape. I'd say it's also defamatory against Mumsnet.

I've archived.

Article is a load of tedious wank, as you'd expect.

'In this study, however, we excavate what it means to write like a GC by analyzing how GC forum users rely on reactionary language and deploy storytelling practices in ways that calcify their anti-trans ideologies as personal and natural while rendering transgender people as anti-feminist, dangerous, and monstrous. To identify how GC groups perform political mythmaking and construct extremist identities, we undertook a computationally assisted discursive analysis of two popular GC forums: Ovarit and Mumsnet’s “Feminism: Sex & Gender” board (abbreviated to “FSG”). Through comparative platform discourse analysis, we analyzed over 80k posts and comments scraped from Ovarit and over 60k posts and comments scraped from Mumsnet (Burgess and Matamoros-Fernández 2016; Lewis and Marwick 2017)'

The only mildly amusing thing about it is the name of the Journal.

BATS.

“I Took a Deep Breath and Came Out as GC”: Gender Critical Storytelling, Radicalization, and Discursive Practice on Ovarit and Mumsnet

Following the closure of the anti-trans subreddit r/GenderCritical, gender critical (GC) internet users have migrated to more obscure, invite-only spaces. A side-effect of this GC dispersal is that activity in online anti-trans spaces has become increa...

Oh Ive been listening. It's fascinating to me how people think about an issue & why they think that way. That's part of why I'm here.

Like most if not all corrupted causes, they start off with kernels of truth/legitimate grievances but has ended up as a gate way to extremism. And by my experience here I certainly notice the similarities with MRA sites. I suppose its part of the human condition where people look for opportunities to project their deep insecurities onto a vehicle but kid themselves its for a higher purpose when its clearly not about that because of the scapegoat element.

Your hepatic genes have affected your grammar.

PermanentTemporary · 09/11/2025 09:26

Given that the first sentence refers to banned Reddit users migrating to ‘obscure invitation-only spaces’, does either author explain why Mumsnet is included at all? MN being neither obscure or invitation-only?

Also the timeline is shit. r/gender critical was banned in 2020 according to my research (I googled it. This seems publishable, amirite?) They do mention the proposed UK reforms to the GRA, placing that in 2017, but so far I haven’t come across any description of what the actual proposed reforms were in relation to how women reacted to them. It’s like trying to describe the campaign to repeal capital punishment but without any reference to what capital punishment actually is.

The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad.

Only an MRA would LOL at women talking about MVAWG. But you have to add in a slur insinuating women talking about their experiences are 'ill', just in case ridiculing rape survivors wasn't enough.

"The worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad."

The point you're spectacularly missing is the generalisation/stereotyping (that ironically GC's were supposed to be against) of transpeople…but I suppose that all goes with the far right package of smearing an entire group.

'They’re eating the cats & dogs'…

Is this high-word-count 'burn' self-referential?

Howseitgoin · 09/11/2025 08:32

(And, FWIW, I think the GC position is apolitical. Not left, not right, just acceptance of reality.)

It would be if it were just about the logistics of how to manage competing rights. But it tends to wade much deeper into far right waters in terms of hyper disgust of challenges to traditional social norms that's perceived as 'degeneracy' spreading like a 'disease' corrupting the populous …a sign of 'civilisational decline'.

You're being selective. It's easy to find GC people on the left and the right, just as the previous poster said.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 09/11/2025 09:18

Women notice men are arrogantly trampling all over them.

Women start talking about it.

Men decide it's women's problem for noticing.

Men throw any old shit around to try and delegitimise women's voices.

Tale as old as time.

Women know the truth. We know it because we live it first hand. Men telling us our own self knowledge is wrong because their theories about what it is to be us don't allow for it are just demonstrating their own misogyny, and the more they do it the more transparent it becomes.

So carry on chaps, please! You sow and water the seeds of your own undoing. 😘

Every thread on the feminism gender has some version of a perverse portrayal of trans people. And no, I'm not fetching for what you already know to be a fact.

Unable to substantiate your assertions, again.

Given the amount of time you apparently spend reading these threads, it’s surprising you still haven’t understood the basic argument. The objection is not to “trans people” but to men colonising women’s spaces and activities. We must have explained this thousands of times, yet you still don’t grasp this simple fact.

As an example of GCs ending up on the far right, they gave a post saying that someone was planning to vote Conservative. In my loathing of Stella Braverman’s performative nonsense, I still don’t think I have ever referred to her or to the Tories as far right.

All these fantasy themed names suggest something

Yes: an inability to accept the real world in which you are one of eight billion and are nothing special. A desire to turn the world into your personal 24/7 video game in which you are the playable character and everyone else is a non-playable character whose sole reason for existing is to further the plot for the playable character.

Basically, these people are Walter Mitty levels of fantasist, coupled with an apparent failure to recognise that magic isn't real and hence the D&D "Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity" doesn't exist in real life.

The real reason why they hate us is because they go around in this fantasy and, when we say "he" and "the gents is the next door along mate", we break their immersion in that fantasy.

Edited

Well as a fantasy nerd I don't really think that conclusion is inevitable....I love it because I love it, not because I can't cope with reality and want to be special.

I don't know why that abstract characterises Mumsnet as an "obscure invite only space", make them look thick.

FragilityOfCups · 09/11/2025 09:12

I wonder how many people predicted that saying "sex is real and sometimes it matters" would spawn so much "analysis"?

It's pretty dishonest to pretend you can't understand what that means to the point you need to write a piece of software to put it into different words.

Dishonesty is built in to the TRA position though - it can't exist without contradicting itself.

@Howseitgoin You don't seem to see a problem with telling posters on this board what they think and believe, without actually listening to them. And labeling posters GC.

And yet again the false teaming with the far right. Best ignore his repetitive slurs tbh.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 09/11/2025 09:07

Trying to work out how the data has been analyzed.

In our findings, we present qualitative analyses of user posts that demonstrate how these discursive practices are deployed by GC users alongside quantitative data (which we note by token count in each dataset: nOvarit and nFSG, respectively) that contextualizes the prevalence of each pattern

We looked at some posts and picked out some likely looking words. We then counted up the number of times these words (or derivatives) occurred in all the messages

Figure 3. “Coming out” posts from Ovarit (left) and FSG (right; anonymized; highlight emphasis added)

The anonymization seems to be limited to blacking out the poster's user name whilst showing the full text of the post. I have not tried but I am guessing it would be pretty easy to just search on post text to find the original message. Does not seem a very effective way of anonymizing a poster's identity

... examination of post text across each dataset using Python and digital humanist tools for the purposes of identifying patterns and outliers (see Appendix A for details)

Has anyone found appendix A yet?

Is this scraping why our boards have been relatively nice and quiet I wonder, he and his mates were warned off so as to keep the data "pure". Oh wait, I forgot, we already have men who post on here, bots from other countries...
I think the data pool might already be too contaminated to say "all women do X".
Such as shame as I'd love to live life like a Magic 8 Ball and just have a few predetermined reactions to things.

I do wonder how they address this in their methodology. We have loads of Reddit posters coming over to post threads and responses - how do they ensure they're not getting fake, whipped up posts? There are loads on MN that scream "this never happened" in general.

I speak my truth.

Those Mumsnet GC-types engage in myth-making.

Ha! Exactly.

No response to the dangers posed by the far left, then?

Look, sure, the far left certainly can & does go overboard with authoritarianism, In more recent times see: 'cancel culture' in their quest for ideological purity in terms social justice & historically class based fascism. But the context on this thread is the far right & GC's not the left & its many foibles.
