Good law project again

Mediaeval English version of Julianus, the more usual contemporary form in England is Julian but as @Rightsraptor says, it had a tiny revival as a result of the Forsyte Saga but Maugham's paternal grandfather's name was Henry Jules Benedictus so perhaps it's a nod to that form of Julius (Julianus is the diminutive form of Julius).

Just for fun, I looked to see if he's got a Grokipedia entry, and hey presto!

The Forsyte Saga was broadcast in about 1967 IIRC, and Jolyon was born in 1971. I assume his mum was a big fan.

I consulted my actual paper Oxford Dictionary of names and as I suspected might be the case, it says under 'Jolyon' "see Julian".

It's a name from 'The Forsyte Saga' to me, at least. It was a family name borne by several of the males.

The Forsytes had a family business and owned property in Mayfair and other such places. The trilogy follows the family through the ups and down of life.

Jolyon Maugham does not necessarily come from such a family ...

I’ve watched a LOT of cricket. The women’s and men’s games are distinctly different in terms of hitting length, speed of bowling etc. the rope is brought in for the women’s game so the pitch is smaller, allowing there to be more boundaries from less powerful hitting. As someone said upthread, the men regularly hit the ball into the crowd or onto the roof but the women hardly ever do, never mind bowling speeds

If pool was a gender affected activity, I think the chances of cricket NOT being are zero.

May not be 'overtly' mixed sex, but that is Jolyon's aim. To have no sports where only one sex can compete together.

If he wanted it on the basis of gender then perhaps he could suggest a way to differentiate the genders? I suspect he'd say this was gatekeeping or down to each individual's feelings or something.

I should point out that Maxine Blythin is still on the books of Wiltshire women's cricket team, having left Kent in 2021. In Blythin's first season at Kent, they were made Kent Woman Cricketer of the Year. To say that cricket is a non contact sport is ridiculous, as evidenced in the video of Brett Lee bowling at Piers Morgan. I played at the Lords indoor centre as part of our company's cricket practice and faced a young Aussie solicitor who was a very fast bowler, no comparison to the stuff I faced in club cricket. The men's cricket ball weighs between 5.5 oz and 5.75 oz, the women's ball weighs between 4.94 oz and 5.31 oz. The fastest ever ball recorded in women's cricket, was bowled by Shabnim Ismail at 82.1 mph. The fastest recorded ball by a male bowler was Shoaib Akhtar at 100.2 mph.

It's not even really making all sports mixed sex. At least not overtly mixed sex.

As with toilets, it seems to be really really important to have a category designated as "women only" but a certain subset of men get to have access to it.

I was just thinking that. I played a lot of sport at uni, of a non-contact but v physical variety. I did women only sessions and mixed sex sessions every week. I knew when I played with the guys they would have strength and height advantages. As we all did.

Well here’s hoping it will add to the growing group of legal precedents we have. Of course men shouldn’t be allowed in women’s cricket. And, on the bright side still, if the trans millions are heading towards our grifting ex-barrister (because cases on that topic bring him more loot than any other), they’re not going to the brilliant masterminds who somehow got us into this position in the first place.

I know it doesn't need to be said about cricket, but I went to watch the 100s with my daughter over the summer. Watching the women, who were wonderful but when they scored a six the ball typically made it just over the barrier but didn't bother us in the crowd. Stayed for the first half of the mens, the ball was frequently being hit into the crowd and on occasion almost onto the roof of Edgbaston. The power differential between the two was so clearly evident.

The fastest male bowlers deliver at about 100mph. The fastest women are 80mph. That addresses the fairness issue.

On the subject of whether cricket is contact or non-contact, why does Maugham think batsmen wear pads, gloves and helmets?

I honestly don't know how people fall for it.

I suspect that, in addition to those who see donating to the GLP as a good cause to support (particularly now Mermaids are a busted flush), there's a cohort of people who've bought the line that "trans rights are under attack" and are desperate for someone to "save them". This particularly applies to the sort of person you find on Transgender Reddit, convinced (sadly) that they're the potential victim of a genocide, "all GCs want us dead", so on and so forth.

They get to raise a load of cash with no oversight & no tranparency about where it ends up. They totter along to a judge with something that only identifies as a case, get thrown out on their arse & lo! nothing at all achieved, except an opportunity for Maugham to shove out a load of emotive guff & insults to the judiciary on Bluesky, & for Family Maugham to tell themselves what a noble paladin Daddy is.
Meanwhile, the GLP gold hoard ticks up its interest & Maugham can do with it whatever he likes after paying doubtless carefully minimised tax & that big GLP wages bill.
