Met Police set to reopen 9,000 cases in major London grooming gangs probe

In some incidences, children as young as 11 who reported being raped saw trials against their attackers collapse and were left to become victims of further abuse.

Suspected grooming gang and child exploitation cases from the last 15 years will be reviewed as part of the investigation, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said in letter to Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan on Friday evening.

A government-ordered audit into the grooming gangs scandal earlier this year found there is “mismatch” in the way the Met and London local authorities record child abuse.

Baroness Louise Casey’s report said the force logged 2.77 contact child sexual abuse cases per 1,000 children, while boroughs recorded just 1.3 child-in-need assessments for child sexual exploitation and 1.79 for child sexual abuse.

There also appears to be a significant overlap between child sexual abuse and county lines drug trafficking gangs.

Just as an aside, swiftasthewind is evidently clueless about the Catholic church as it not just white! I was at a Catholic comprehensive 40+ years ago with a range of children from immigrant families, different ethnicities and colour, just all Catholic.

swiftasthewind knows nothing about the Pakistani rape gangs either and doesn't intend to find out, because it doesn't fit their narrative. The people in authority who covered up and colluded were not "all white". They were mostly related to the gangs, related to the business owners, members of the perpetrating families. In one town, the local councillor in charge of safe guarding was related to the individual running the gang. The local MPs, school nurses, social workers (some of whom were white, sorry about that) who tried to raise the alarm, were sacked, threatened and accused of racism. Labour MPs Ann Cryer and Sarah Champion were expelled from the labour party for mentioning it.

I wouldn’t waste too much time arguing with this poster.

It's half term. Or, as it is known in universities, reading week.

I’m pretty sure I will be one of those 9000 cases. When I went with my friend to report a rape aged 15 we were threatened that if we went ahead and gave our statements, then we ran the risk of being charged with soliciting. My friend decided not to Perdue, my social worker encouraged me to continue. But I wasn’t taken seriously by police at all. By the time they finally got around to questioning someone I was pregnant (aged16) and was expressly told that I’d be viewed as a slag, an unreliable witness. I needed to focus on my child. So that’s what I did and they got away with it. I’m not sure how I feel about opening old wounds now. Those doubts still carry with me. I’m a grown woman now with a career, I used to foster teens, I have a large loving family and I’m finally in peace. I’d be devastated for my dc to find out my past now. It’s always too little too late with these things

@Showerflowers I am so sorry you were raped as a child and that you were then treated so terribly by the police and let down. Your bravery and strength in the face of this, and at such a young age, was extraordinary. Your loving family and your foster children are lucky to have had you.

His flat in Scarborough and his headstone too. It went to landfill 👏

ArabellaSaurus · 28/10/2025 09:25

Jimmy Saville's house in Glencoe was vandalised so many times they eventually decided to demolish it.

Brainworm · 28/10/2025 09:16

Greyskybluesky · 28/10/2025 08:51

I don’t remember the working class of Rotherham burning down a hotel over Jimmy Saville or church abuses.

I mean, this doesn't even make logical sense!

I’m pretty sure that any building housing sex offenders or paedophiles would be burned to the ground by an angry mob.

For clarity, I would not condone this and I am not comparing asylum seekers to paedophiles. I am countering the point made that random hotels were not burned down because sex offenders and criminals offend.

Plenty of paedophiles have their houses vandalised and are tormented by locals. There is a well known case of this happening to a paediatrician when locals didn’t understand the difference!

@Showerflowers I am sorry that happened to you. Have you had support for this as an adult? Thank you for fostering, we need more like you, I am glad you have your loving family around you.

Thank you. I’ve been in and out of therapy for many years. I never received any direct support. I was angry for a long time but my dh encouraged me to channel that into helping other teens. So that’s what we did x

Yes they were failed by so many people. As I understand it they were failed by the police, social workers and the local councils. What ethnicity were these people? I suspect that they were all white. This isn’t a problem with Pakistani culture, it’s a problem with British culture and how it accepts the abuse of young women and girls as an everyday fact of life.

Is that you Bushra Shaikh?

Swiftasthewind · 28/10/2025 08:46

No. No it hasn’t. Many British people are only up in arms about this because it is a convenient excuse to propagate a narrative against mass immigration and multiculturalism. I don’t remember the working class of Rotherham burning down a hotel over Jimmy Saville or church abuses.

That's a pretty disgusting thing to say about a place where at least 1400 girls were the victims of these extended-family criminal networks. And extremely revealing about your view of working class communities.

Greyskybluesky · 28/10/2025 08:49

Ah, got it. The working class are all racists who burn down hotels.

Newsflash: some of the working class, who you clearly hold in contempt, are not racists and would no more burn a hotel than you would. They want this enquiry and they want it to focus on the specific issues of their communities because they care about these girls.

You just will not understand that.

And now 'British culture' has stood up and said it doesn't accept the abuse of young women and girls in these areas as an everyday fact of life.

So let's get on with an enquiry focusing on the specific factors involved.

@Swiftasthewind you cannot be serious? You sound like you're in a cult.

No sacred casts, all abuse investigated. How can you not see that it is YOU and your beliefs that have denied thousands of women and girls justice and allowed the police and labour party to call the victims slags and prostitutes. The catholic church has had it's reckoning and now this needs its own inquiry.

Can you think about the victims for one moment and stop parroting the academic nonsense your upbringing filled you with?

All groups contain predators. Anyone saying otherwise is ignorant or a bigot. All abuse must be investigated. This abuse was specifically and deliberately covered up by the councils and police, and now the Government. We want to know why and ensure it doesn't happen again.

Those of us that live in effected communities, of all races and religions, want this inquiry, why do you think your opinion trumps victim and community rights for the truth?

Edited

I want an inquiry too, these girls deserve one. But it’s all victims who deserve it, not just the victims of a certain subset of CSE. This inquiry should include everyone, across the board. From groomers in the Pakistani community to all the people who commit sexual offences from within the white British community. My contention is that this is all just an exercise in passing the buck of abuse to one maligned community who already have so much burden to bear and all this will do is make people unfairly suspicious of them even more than they are already. Can’t you see that?

Greyskybluesky · 28/10/2025 08:42

I suspect that they were all white.

Well, you suspect wrongly.
But you still feel able to make that comment because it fits with what you want to believe.
Even though you don't exactly know a whole lot about these cases or the circumstances in which they took place.

Greyskybluesky · 28/10/2025 08:36

@Swiftasthewind just out of interest, do you live in one of the towns/cities where this happened? Rotherham, Rochdale or another?

Many inhabitants of these towns/cities actively want an enquiry focused on the specifics of these cases because they are horrified at what went on in their local communities. They genuinely care about these girls. It is not racism. They also care about the abuse of power and cover ups. I don't think you understand the dynamics of these areas.

EdithStourton · 28/10/2025 08:34

porridgecake · 28/10/2025 07:51

This inquiry is meant to be a specific inquiry about Pakistani rape gangs and the deliberate, sustained cover up by police, social services, local and central government entirely because of who the perpetrators and victims were.
There can be any number of inquiries about as many other groups as anyone wants. It is important not to muddy the waters of this one.
I don't know how to explain it more clearly.

Possibly also worth pointing out to Swift that any thorough enquiry will end up discussing, at some length, the misogyny ingrained in many (white) policemen.

There are degrees of misogyny, just as there are degrees of manu things. Many men who are misogynists still don't think it's okay to rape 14 year olds.

Well to me it seems an awful lot of people are concerned about the plight of girls abused by Pakistani rapists, but when the offender is white and wears a funny hat, all of a sudden it’s not relevant or it doesn’t mean anything.

We should be tackling all abuse across the entirety of society, focusing heavily on one tiny fraction of the abusers is not fair on the rest of victims who deserve justice also.

The point you seem to have missed is that the Catholic priests have been dealt with , punished openly in a court of law and the entire Catholic Church is now generally vilified and held up as an example of the heinous coverups and abuse that was enabled as a result.

Now you are arguing to protect ‘Muslims’ in the same way people argued to protect the Catholic Church.

We must be able to investigate this fully and explore how the police, councils, social workers, judges etc were all complicit. Racial and religious factors clearly played a part. Of the investigators of the Catholic priests had widened their remit to all CSA, we’d still be arguing and hand wringing about it now.
