A demonstration organised by the campaign group Let Women Speak (LWS) took place today at Bonn Square. Around 100 counterprotestors also assembled, including members from the Oxford Green Party, Stand Up to Racism, and Oxford for Trans Rights (O4TR).

There is a baying mob in the footage, it is not the LWS women.

Can you define 'baying mob', please?

Do you think that The Green Party and Stand Up to Racism should have been demonstrating against Let Women Speak? And btw, how can you stop someone turning up to a demonstration in a country that has freedom of speech and movement?

No I don't. And i don't think you can. Hence standing up for KJK and LWS throughout this thread.

ETA: however, if you think
that people should have the right to protest, which I do, then it's obviously their right to. Even if I think that protesting against LWS is misogynistic, sexist behaviour.

Do we know exactly what they were saying / doing to know what 'face value' is?

I'd say that if they turned up with flags and placards promoting their own cause, they were using the opportunity rather than 'supporting'.

I don’t think KJK is doing what she does to be liked. She will admit she will speak to anyone who will listen. I’d imagine she will peeve some off because they are concerned about the optics. But then again, I don’t think she is too bothered. If your aim is to let women speak and to support single sex spaces etc for all women (no matter what their political persuasions), then that is what she’s doing. Love her or hate her she is her own person who has had to put up with some real horrendous stuff from activists, and hasn’t cowered away, when many understandably would.

Because Western countries aren't famous for domestic/ sexual violence & female mental health epidemics - not!…

People in glass houses…

So women can't criticise other countries or cultures for their horrific treatment of women, because men here aren't perfect? Is that right? So women have to pay the price for male behaviour, how very feminist of you.

Brefugee · 19/10/2025 09:48

Blaming the religion for its exploitative bad apples is like blaming the free market for its crony capitalists & then wanting to ban it.

meh. I blame all Catholic priests etc who covered up the abuse scandals - and the fact that their religion is intrinsically anti women by not placing them equally with men within religion and society
i blame all the CofE priests etc who covered up the abuse scandals
and i blame all the muslim heirarchy for covering up abuse - and the fact that their religion is intrinsically anti women by not placing them equally with men within religion and society
i am not sufficiently up on other religions to have comments: but insofar as i know that women aren't equal, i blame them

Within a muslim country? they can do whatever they like, and i will feel free to protest outside that country when it harms women. In my own country i will free to protest and criticise anything AT ALL including but not restricted to the misogyny of religion. Whichever one it is.

I still don't agree that LWS events are intrinsically far right events, regardless of KJK's alignments. They are pro-women events.

It's getting increasingly difficult to defend the accusations that KJK is aligned with the far-right when Tommy Robinson is posting videos of the two of them in a restaurant together.

PoshCoffee · 19/10/2025 09:36

Fundamental religions all tend to have problematic doctrines. I don’t think we should be shying away from pointing out that fundamental Islam treats women and girls as second class citizens, and that is an issue in some places in the UK.

There have been Union flags with 'TERF ISLAND' on for years. It's nothing to do with the recent flag movement.

I'm pretty sure that the LWS attendees would prefer not to have a load of other people showing up and drowning them out.

Has everyone forgotten how well these alignment accusations go for the accusers?!

We've spent decades trying to address the problems we have in our glass house, and continue to do so. How much effort have other houses put into putting themselves in order. KJK is not anti-muslim, she's trying to bring attention to how this religion disrespects women, she's trying to be a voice of protest for the women who can't speak up for themselves, protesting about misogynistic cultural practices is not anti anything it's pro women.

Our 'efforts' are cold comfort to victims who continue to suffer increasing, not decreasing abuse.

And it does does not follow that culture is wholly or even partially transferable particularly after generational assimilation unless you are of the false belief that behaviour is inherent to ethnicity. Immigrant groups importing illiberal behaviours isn't exclusive to Muslims. Italians, Irish, Asians etc first generations aren't exactly known for being crime free or sans misogyny nor are the English guilt free in their brutal colonial endeavours. Are you suggesting they too are irredeemable?

"KJK is not anti-muslim, she's trying to bring attention to how this religion disrespects women, she's trying to be a voice of protest for the women who can't speak up for themselves, protesting about misogynistic cultural practices is not anti anything it's pro women."

Blaming the religion for its exploitative bad apples is like blaming the free market for its crony capitalists & then wanting to ban it. See where this logic goes? That you assume practising muslims are all misogynistic is as good as blaming every business person as a crook. If you at all believed in Western principles of which includes individualism, you would understand that.

I strongly suspect KJK's professed particular concern about muslim abuse (& interestingly disinterested in where the overwhelming abuse in the UK emanates from) is directly associated to white supremacy. Fascists are known to coopt causes to gain inroads via fear mongering about 'degenerate' scape goats (gays/trans/blacks/muslims/jews etc).

but that is not generally done in the name of religion and is not said to be a fundamental part of that religion.

tbh, i would no be wary of attending a LWS event because i don't want those right-wing idiots blurring the message. That is my own stance, other people have other opinions/stances.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 19/10/2025 09:23

Found the corner of a flag - 33 seconds in on the first part.

Can't see the words terf island on it though - it appears to be being carried by a right wing thug cleverly posing as a 70 year old woman.

SlackJawedDisbeliefXY · 19/10/2025 09:18

And here

The camera view is quite narrow so I don't see the the Union Jack with 'Terf Island' flags

It just seems like a group of women trying to speak whilst being shouted down by a fella with a PA who sounds a bit deranged

There's no comparison, and you know that really.

'let women speak' rally in Afghanistan? That could end badly.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 19/10/2025 09:10

It's bad optics - to whom?

ApplebyArrows · 19/10/2025 09:08

Oh come on. If you decide to be mates with someone then you share some of the responsibility when your new mates start turning up to your open-invitation gatherings. This isn't a case of poor innocent Kellie-Jay having her protest gatecrashed by racist thugs. She openly chose to ally herself with them!

It's bad optics. It does nothing for feminism to join up with the hooligan mob. Even those of us who are concerned about immigration should know better than to be friendly with these scum.

The trans rights movement have done themselves incredible harm by failing to call out the criminal element within their ranks. Let's not fall into the same trap.

Quite.

Warning against the dangers of military age Islamist men invading our shores and the threat they pose to women and girls is not racist - it's definitely pro-women.

Max Morris a self identified non binary, a lecturer at Oxford Brookes, Green Councillor etc. His SM seems to show a man who occasionally likes to wear make up. He supports the idea that trans and non binary people should access whatever facilities they want - I’d imagine he includes himself in this. He is there to protest women from speaking - says it all really.
