I thought Julia long was dreadful, she was totally unprepared. I felt for her as she’d just come off a train, but her thoughts weren’t organised.

stomachamelon · 23/10/2025 18:09

@Morningsleepini am a Zionist. And?

SionnachRuadh · 23/10/2025 16:03

It's basically impossible to get 83% of Jews to agree on anything. A friend who used to be on the Board of Deputies says that there are 300 deputies, and that means there are 400 opinions. So that level of consensus has to be taken seriously.

The left have got their own Jews, and either don't realise or don't care how marginal they are in the Jewish community. They're only slightly more representative than that Sikh guy who joined the BNP because he had a beef with Muslims.

Julia Long with his/her? looks definitely should be banned from the women’s spaces.

Fuck off.

https://www.jpr.org.uk/reports/year-after-october-7-british-jewish-views-israel-antisemitism-and-jewish-life

'About two in three British Jews (65%) identify as Zionist, up slightly compared to before October 7. 10% identify as anti-Zionist, also up slightly.'

(I have no idea of the background of JPR, so no idea which way if any the organisation leans, the stats are referenced in the downloadable report on that page, for anyone who wants to drill into them more)

'Nearly half of British Jews (46%) say that antisemitism is ‘a very big problem’ in the UK today, compared to 28% in 2018 and only 11% in 2012. In total, 83% of British define antisemitism as a problem in Britain, the highest proportion found since records began over a decade ago.'

Is that because she says things that you disagree with?

Julia Long is a female, a long time feminist and therefore is welcome to use female single sex spaces.

From my experience, most left wing activist types don't actually know any Jews except for hardcore anti-Zionist left wingers, and have no concept of how unrepresentative those people are. They might even believe "many" Jews hold that position, but they're massively oversampling Alexei Sayle.

We have one of these in Australia called Sarah Swartz. She dines out in the left wing press as their go to Jew and her schtick is “I’m not like those other Zionist Jews”.

Completely unrepresentative of most of Australia’s Jews but absolutely feted by the progressive left.

Yes, those few Jews who conform and/or those who prioritise their socialist/International Socialist identity over their Jewish identity.

Half of the world's Jewish population lives in Israel. Almost all of the UK Jewish community have family in Israel. However queasy they feel about any given actions of the Israeli government - and they often do - that's not a bond that can be broken.

When we're told that "many" Jews reject Zionism, it seems to me that "many" is doing duty for the tiny Neturei Karta religious cult, and the small number of elderly Jewish communists who think Jeremy Corbyn is a diamond geezer.

I read what she said - which is almost word for word at the salient point that Julia Long quoted. Either Rahlia Gupta is naive or she is anti-semitic. She lost my sympathy at 'Zionist agenda', because it suggessts that her agenda is anti-Zionist (anti-semitism with a left-wing face). FWIW, I think she is right about Likud and Netanyahu (though I would not use the term 'fascist' - I doubt it fits) but she ruins her point by accepting Hamas' take on the war which they started this time round without any understanding that they are a terrorist organisation, and one currently inflicting death on opponents on the streets of Gaza.
FiLiA is now a mess.

SionnachRuadh · 17/10/2025 12:07

Shortshriftandlethal · 17/10/2025 09:06

A Zionist is simply anyone who lives in Israel or who has family or friends in Israel, or anyone who supports Israel's right to exist - as a homeland for the jewish people safe from the persecution they have been subject to for millennia.

This political fixation and misunderstanding is taking you to unsavoury places.

This wont make me very popular but if you think how questioning we all are on FWR of who is posting what and why on this forum, I find it really strange that so many are suprised by events at FiLia.

If it was my money I was forking out to go and meekly be told by self appointed experts what my feminism should be, I would do a bit of research as to who the organisers are.

There have been many many threads on FWR about a certain section of feminists who are adament that their version of feminism, very much based on left alliances, is the only right one.

They are the women who accuse any woman who says the issue, (eg mothers losing rights over children transitioning) is so important that if the only people who will platform us are right wing, as collaborators with the enemy. The women who years ago stopped KJK speaking at an event. Who every year tell Julia Long she isn't welcome.

Who even those who didn't know their names had such an alien experience at FiLia 2 years ago that a thread was started on FWR talking about the elephant in the room. The women who were happy to promote the film makers who basically took KJK ideas and publicity style to put them forward as who women should listen to, rather than the originator.

Just as the stopped the instigator of the idea of trans widows speaking in favour of friends. Or the long time campaigning GC activist lesbian from speaking, because she had worked across the divide in the US.

And as this meeting in the US is the one that blew up and was reported on FWR by Jean Hatchet, something those who have been on FWR must remember.

If we are able to remember the links between trans activists, why aren't we doing this for those women who consistently work to denigrate GC activists ie those who are part of Actual Gender Critical Left (now embedded in FiLia) and the network of socialist feminist who are part of the same circle. If you are looking for pointless purity spiral politics this is them. They even thought WPUK not pure enough.

And for socialists, not unlike the Labour Party, they are incredibly elitist. And so caught up in the rightness of their correct analysis that of course you abuse your position when invited to speak from the platform (an elitist concept in itself) you will feel you have to virtue signal to your political allies that you are on message.

FiLia may at best just wanting to be feminist entertainment inc. but if you remove the politics and just go for the big names without looking at their platform this is what happens. It has been going for too many years to claim naivety.

But to be surprised that something like this would happen at an event structured like this is I would suggest, not really facing up to the situation. In buying a ticket you are signalling that you accept others will decide what is important.

Sadly this is a repeat of how socialist feminists divided what was the Women's Liberation Movement. They just couldn't accept that other women would not fall into line with their politically correct view of the world.

Grin

edited for terrible typos (again) and to add that this year I would suggest twitter wars have created personal spite on line that has bled into real life. Some of it is just plain nasty.

Edited

Feminists and women's rights campaigners are not a hive mind. It would be ridiculous to think 51% of the population think the same way.

But for me being a broad church isn't the issue.

It is niave apolitical women thinking ooh this willl mean I can rub shoulders with important feminists, and everyone will like me because basically its just about women being together and it will all be alright.

Whilst in fact the structure of the event is a contraint and aceptes an implies an elitist attitude about some having a voice but the vast majority dont.

I think I explained on another thread how WLM Conferences acutally worked. And basically the content was decided by those attending by consulting with them in advance. This means it was far more broadbased than this essentially feminism for women who can afford it.

But did offer the opportunity for women working on specific issues to meet up and talk to each other, not sit in chairs where the apolitical organisers had decided that those who had appropriated other women's work would have THE voice.

So whether you are an isolated woman from a small village or women from a city, you get the chance to talk to and with those who want to advance a particular issue.

The whole antiquated structure feeds into what is currently feminism. The vast majority just consuming what they can read on line, whilst others think they are so important they have their own blog or whatever.

But if you want or accept that your feminism is curated for you, then the curator sooner of later uses that position to not only advance friends, but put them on a platform.

And when, even if they are well meaning, are niave enough to have been infiltrated by AGCL and their cronies this is what happens. They aren't there to be a broadchurch they are there to advance their narrow few of how and what feminism is.

And irrespective of the politics, if anyone at a WLM conference had thought they could give a speech they would have been heckled of the platform and told to get down among and at the same level as other women.

However, what hasn't changed is problems at the disco.

(Was really sad to see a review of FiLia by a woman who had never been before and went more out of interest than any feminist committment. Her report of workshops was quite interesting and sometimes funny. But she concluded that the disco was for the lesbians at the event. )

Do you have a link to that review?

Thats interesting. Curious to know more about how the WLM meetings worked, and how effective they were. There must have been organisers, if not leaders?

I'm still always stunned when people claim the Jews are committing 'genocide' in Gaza. Do they know what genocide means? It's not just warfare, not just bombs. It's an attempt to eradicate an entire ethnic or national group. Within living memory, the Nazis made a serious effort to wipe out the Jews, and killed approximately six million. The Israelis are not attempting to wipe out the Palestinians.

I don't mean to make a pedantic point about vocabulary, but to ask people to stop diluting the horror of that word and concept, genocide.
