Whitechapel Leisure Centre - in an area with a large Islamic population runs entire Women Only sessions.

Calling Whitechapel 'uber liberal enclave' is a bit ridiculous. It's an area with an enormous Muslim population and has been for decades. And it's unloved and poverty stricken in the most part. Obviously it's liberal in that there's plenty of brown people. But no more so than anywhere else in north or east London.

But they should have the freedom to choose!

This article about the fun run was clearly written to flame hatred.
It's a community fun run for men and (under 12) children organised by a mosque.
I'm sure the mosque organises women only events too.

Indeed. But as a minimum both men and women should be invited to participate and given freedom of choice instead of it being denied to females over age 12.

The real question is to Tower Hamlets council, how they are allowing their park to be used for this event, but given as its Tower Hamlets, I wouldn't expect any less from them.

It is appalling what Tower Hamlets council get away with. They are rotten to the core and it starts at the top with the current mayor Lutfur Rahman who was found guilty of electoral fraud (including bribery and making false statements) when he was mayor back in 2015 and removed from office. Despite this, he was voted back in as mayor in 2022 so it seems we are stuck with him. Which is, quite frankly, why Tower Hamlets is fucked. (And yes, I am a Tower Hamlets resident).

Edit: just to add that the last thing I would call Tower Hamlets is “uber liberal”. Left wing and liberal are not the same. The sexism and misogyny on display in Tower Hamlets, particularly in the area around East London Mosque is disgraceful and more reflective of the 19th century than the 21st century world city that London is.

If it's a men only run then that's fine - they are entitled to organise a male only run, the same as women are entitled to organise a female only run. But if they are allowing girls under 12 to run then they are surely falling foul of the equality act, as they are discriminating against women over 12 based on age.

There is no shared protected characteristic between all men and girls under 12 that is not also shared by women over 12 and therefore the exclusion of some females but not others is unlawful.

As a democratic society with a robust equality act, we should not be allowing men to discriminate against adult women.

Either all women or no women, or its an under 12s only event and no one over 12 may enter, but girls under 12 and men of any age is unacceptable within the law and allowing it is allowing misogyny.
