Tbf, there’s a big difference between being intelligent and being educated.

Univeristies are hardly breeding grounds for critical thinking these days.

And Oxford in particular, no wonder it’s dropping down the ranks

She doesn't yet have an Oxford degree. Her degree is from Brown, we don't know what grade. She did get straight As at GCSE and A Level, but otoh Ivy League accepts legacy students,, why not a celeb? Besides, booksmart doesn't equal common sense, so many very smart people can also lose touch with reality.

I'm in two minds.

On the one hand, she's young, she's not particularly bright, and she was just going along with what the loudest voices were saying at the time. It's easy to go along with what you think is the prevailing opinion, and it's really difficult, if your fame, your reputation and your appeal is your career, to go against that.

On the other hand, I do get where the "No, she made her bed she can lie in it" crowd are coming from.

And yes, she lost her license for repeatedly speeding.

She's not young, she's 35, and was 30 when this began.

When you say "conquests" do you actually mean "victim"? We know Harvey Weinstein was a rapist who preyed on women in the film industry.

Thank you @GallantKumquat for the correction, I don't know where I got the racism thing from then, apologies all.

Exactly, conquest is a gross word anyway and even if some women gritted their teeth consensually in exchange for a role, that ignores the many who were raped.

@MusettasWaltz its not the money, its the fame and the oscars. I remember that picture but there were loads more where she was happily there with him. She apparently was named as one who courted him in exchange for movies. I think others were Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Wilde, Blake Lively (who was his main sidepiece).

These are unsubstantiated rumours painting women in a bad light, when the man in question is actually a rapist.

To me it feels very slut shaming and victim blaming, with a side order of these women wouldn't achieve anything if a HW hadn't give them a leg up in exchange for a leg over.

I find this really distasteful.

@MusettasWaltz Emma only got those roles quickly after rumours of her and Harvey Weinstein. She was apparently one of his conquests when she wanted to break hollywood then quickly fell out of his limelight.

A franchise actor being hyped immediately after doesn't have to equal casting couch. Radcliffe was also hyped in plays & films for the immediate post-Potter years, doesn't mean Kevin Spacey or someone was fetting him roles.
Though I did incidentally read that Spacey pursued Radcliffe...hope he evaded that creep.

@MusettasWaltz you can usually identify them, they are so hungry for fame that they will do anything, and their success comes out of nowhere. JL then won the Oscar. EW was in a ton of movies out of nowhere too. You can google it but essentially its when she had the pixie cut hairdo.

Not exactly equivalent given EW didn't get her career making franchise from Weinstein as Lawrence did. Are you just basing this on the picture or is there evidence?

There is a horrible photo of him grabbing her in public.

But does that mean anything actually happened? She was a millionaire, not like she needed money. Plus none of those films were Miramax or Weinstein Company (Little Women was post-MeToo, obvs other 3 weren't)

What? Weinstein? Where'd you hear that?

I still don't think she was bad in them, but that is interesting info...disturbing too. Jennifer Lawrence is well known to be connected to him, and is another who I think performs well but was overhyped in relation to what she'd actually done

MusettasWaltz · 30/09/2025 04:04

ThatCyanCat · 29/09/2025 14:42

It wouldn't be hard. However, she does already have West End experience so I'm pretty confident.

She looks better for the part too. Lovely looking child who I am sure will grow into a lovely looking woman, but doesn't have that "supermodel in training" look that Hermione really, really shouldn't have.

Yes, it's awkward but I do think Emma was too pretty for Hermione. Hermione does have an ugly duckling moment at the Yule Ball & she's certainly nice looking, plus her buck teeth are shortened in the middle of the series, but I don't think she was meant to have a model type look.

Haven't seen Radcliffe or Grint in anything else they've done since, but I didn't think Emma was bad in other stuff she'd done, (Bling Ring, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah, Little Women). She's not Saoirse Ronan, but she's not awful either.

Didn't think Grint was all that terrible either. I have seen Radcliffe at 10 in the BBC David Copperfield, and he was good there. Apparently Columbus was influenced by this and the recommendation of Maggie Smith (who was Aunt Betsy in it) to cast Radcliffe. I think I read in an interview that his nerves over the Potter hype made him worse in the early films, and I think that's probs true.

He was the best of the bunch tbf, pity they gave all the best lines to Emma’s character.

Yes, he acted in the M Night Shyamalan series Servant for several seasons as 1 of the 4 leads, I'd like to watch that. It's horror so would definitely show another side and has been well reviewed. He was also in Shymalan's film Knock At The Cabin in 2023 too.

I tried to give the movie kids a bit of leeway and they did become marginally better as the films went on (despite Watson only being able to do over ennuciated know it all or angry, Grimes only being able to do gulping comedic shock or bad tempered, and Radcliffe only being able to do wide eyed shock or shouting)

But fuck, the first film is basically unwatchable because of the overdone stage schoolness of it all. Particularly bad standout scenes are the '....I'm....a....what?' line after the 'yer a wizard Harry' and the 'you've got dirt on your nose by the way' one. It's hard to believe that they, out of God knows how many kids auditioned, were the best.

I’ve just seen this post. I watched the 1 minute video. She definitely mouthed “bar one” just as is stated. That’s a pretty nasty dig at JKR and it was only in 2022.

I’m like wow 😯

Edited

Incredible. I thought she was silly & had been guilted/emotionally blackmailed by TRAs (there's a very uncomfortable clip of her with Paris Lees) but I didn't realise that she'd was spitefully dissing her.

GallantKumquat · 30/09/2025 01:32

Grint's 'auntie' comment was fairly innocuous: "I don't necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she's still my auntie. It's a tricky one".

But, it has to be remembered what we're we're talking about: cancellation was an act of terror. Many lost their jobs, friends, acquaintances, and professional colleagues - even family members - over the issue. Nothing can really describe the sensation of having your life turned upside-down and the people who you once counted as as friends become part of an unrecognizable mob and the instruments of your downfall.

Rowling would have thought that her generosity, personal integrity and the strength of her professional relationships would have insulated her from that. Instead Watson, Radcliff, Grint and countless others turned against her at the drop of a hat and only thing that saved her was the brute force of her wealth and established fame. But as for the people around her, the majority could have been picked out of Lord of the Flies. It is an incalculable betrayal that goes far beyond any one given action or statement.

Where are you getting the ‘racist’ bit from?

Does anyone ever bother with receipts?

I wasn't sure if I remembered what he had said correctly, which is why I phrased it as a question.

I figured someone else would remember exactly what he said and correct me if I had remembered it wrong.

Edit to add that the reason I mentioned the racist bit was because I thought he had essentially said he felt affectionate towards her like you would an aunt, but thought her views on trans rights were akin to racism.

Again, I may be remembering this all wrong so please feel free to correct me if I have misremembered.

Yes, I can see why they chose film initially, but the material seems much more suited to a TV series.

Also not surprised they've gone with kids who have some acting chops already, well as far as that's possible at aged 11. Casting something like this is inevitably a punt, and they failed pretty hard last time. I find it really hard to believe that the leading 3 were all the best candidates available for the roles.

or her previous views are less fashionable now and garner her fewer headpats

It’s really almost impossible to know which is the real truth innit?

Yes it is but I'm prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt.

When young, issues often appear black and white. People change their minds as they get older, their views soften and they are better able to see things from other viewpoints. That is what has happened with Emma Watson.

I am going to defend Grint a bit here, I thought he was the better of the three in the last few films, acting a lot more like an older teenage boy would be actually like, talk and react compared to the script-stilted Radcliffe and Watson.
