It's actually deeply relevant as the majority of the article is her faffing around explaining why she got banned from driving for speeding.

She says it's strange as on a set she can do anything, sing, dance, do stunts, but can't seem to remember her keys, money, or to drive 30 in a 30.

She also says she got used to never driving anywhere as was always driven to set.

These are weak excuses for a woman in her 30s, who hasn't had an acting role for 7 years now!

So by your analysis someone highlighting that the same traits, that often bring men to attack girls and women or disregard their safety, are present in men who identify as trans is "dog whistling".

Watson and all the others are allowed to hold different views to JKR; they don't have to agree with her just because they played her characters.

What really pissed me off was that, as far as I can recall, none of them ever spoke out against all the deranged abuse and threats she received and still does. Did any of them ever say, "I disagree with her on this but I'm appalled by all the threats and abuse and they need to stop"?

EW did seem surprized and rather put out that JK would rehash the HP story with someone else in her original role. Surely she's old enough now to understand that you can't bite the hand that feeds you without some consequences

The funny thing is, even if this is an attempt to get in on the TV series publicity, she doesn't need to do it for that. JKR has made it very clear (like a woman who's taken the amount of abuse she has needs to dog whistle anything!) that she has no interest in trying to silence or sack anyone who holds different views. The new HP cast, as far as I know, were not made to utter "TWAW" before being offered their roles and she was very open that even if she could sack Essiedu for disagreeing with her, she wouldn't.

For anyone who doesn't want to read a Mail Online article:

1. EW says she hopes people "can still love me" for believing TWAW
2. Has been banned from driving because she keeps on breaking the speed limit having got used to being driven to work for years
3. Hollywood is not a nice place

I thought this too and also wondered if the fact that her good friend Tom Felton,who came out in support of JKR but hasn't been cancelled (in fact the opposite as he's doing The Cursed Child on Broadway soon) had any effect.

I'm pretty sure that whatever her motive is for this it'll a self interested one and whilst I hope she stands by her words she is someone who as an actor who from a young ago has been used to being feted by everyone around her so I can see her backtracking when the backlash kicks in.

The term dog whistle has been so misused it has become as meaningless as the term inclusion.

Of course, dog whistle is a dog whistle of a phrase itself. I cannot believe that supposedly thinking people still use it. It is a buzz word past its use by date.

But also enlightening in its use. It is now all too commonly used to describe women’s words.

Whodathunkit! That a poster using the term ‘dog whistle’ to describe JK Rowling’s words, also uses terms like whoring, super-feminine and Karen. And who declares that any female people excluding male people (except for the concession of safety) will contribute to male people not being able to act with respect towards female people.

Not surprising when you realise the articles that this poster links usually display such hatred of women. Like that needed to make accusations such as ‘it is not what she says, but how she says it’.

When you see this hatred, you cannot miss it again.

This. And it's yet another example of how regressive gender ideology is, that having a mental health problem is considered some kind of slur, or at least the male rights activists pretend that it is. I had thought society was moving past this kind of attitude to mental health, but of course not.
Of course it is far more clear with young, often neurodiverse, girls who trans-identify that there is poor mental health involved. And also, mental health is certainly spouted all the time as a reason why males' desire for validation is more important than female sex-based rights.
But the MRAs dont want a genuine discussion about mental health, because it's too important to their movement to be able to claim that all the, often older, often aggressive, males are just as vulnerable as the young girls.

The interpretation of 'Dog whistle for trans people as deluded pedatory sex abusers' is taking an absolutist, catastrophised view and assuming the worst in words that don't explicitly say what has been claimed.

Really does get tiring to push back on all the many distortions and lies so thank you. Assuming the worst, catastrophic language, poor comprehension is common in the accusations.

Otherwise, the sad truth is that many (many!) young women spout TWAW nonsense because they have been brought up to bekind and because this mantra has played out endlessly in social media, repeated by educationalists, by politicians, by health care professionals etc ad nauseaum.

Of course and unfortunately it is going to take women to get older to wake up to the reality that privileging a feeling over the physical reality of a material body is highly problematic. So I’m very much hoping that EW is changing her mind. However what’s more likely is that EW still thinks TWAW but now also thinks she’s being kind by modelling civil disagreement. Maybe it’s a start.

I agree with PP's that she may be sensing the shifting sands and is scrambling to stay relevant.
I didn't realise the last film she made was in 2018.
I suspect she is also looking back and (although I think she has the self awareness of a teaspoon...) may begin to see what JK gave her and is softening her stance. Going for a half in/half out -which historically not success.

I can not forgive the interviews she gave-laughing and saying of course she would share a loo with a trans woman and all sorts of things which obviously have no impact on her life but do have on women and girls outside of her bubble. She was very outspoken on TWAW and helped ingrain that thought in little girls who loved hermione-using her platform to influence.

Yes, it is galling, yes it is probably motivated by self interest, but the tide is turning, and every single person who crosses back over the golden bridge makes it easier for the next one.
