"when she was slammed for "liking" a tweet that referred to trans women as "men in dresses.”

-Supporting a dog whistle for ‘deluded’/mentally ill

Months later, Rowling came under fire again for coming to the defense of Maya Forstater. At the time, the researcher had been waging an employment discrimination battle, as her contract with a think tank wasn't renewed after she made a series of anti-trans statements. These statements included that people should not be "compelled to play along with literal delusions like 'transwomen are women,'" and she referred to a gender-fluid person as a "man who likes to dress in women's clothes.”

-Supporting those who explicitly call trans people ‘deluded’/mentally ill

"Rowling revealed she is a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual assault and said this led her to sympathize with women who had "concerns around single-sex spaces." She argued against throwing "open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he's a woman.”

-Dog whistle for trans people as deluded predatory sex abusers

"Rowling published a new novel titled "Troubled Blood" under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The book, which revolved around a male serial killer who dresses like a woman, was accused of being anti-trans.
It was disappointing that Rowling was propagating a "long-standing and hurtful presentation of trans women as a threat," a spokesperson for Mermaids, a charity that supports trans children, said to CNN. Rowling, meanwhile, said the book "was loosely based" on real killers."

-Dog whistle for trans people as mentally ill abusers of women

"When Scotland's new Hate Crime and Public Order Act went into effect in April, Rowling tried to bait them into arresting her with posts online. The law criminalizes "stirring up hatred" against people based on their race, religion, disability, sexuality or gender identity. By passing the law, Scotland "placed higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of femaleness, however misogynistically or opportunistically, than on the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls," Rowling said in the thread on X. If anything she wrote qualified as an offense under the new law, "I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment," Rowling said."

-Dog whistle for trans people as deluded/mentally ill predatory abusers of women

"Rowling posted a photo from the fight, accusing Khelif of being a man who was "enjoying the distress of a woman he's just punched in the head."

-Dog whistle for mentally ill trans person who enjoys abusing of women

I'm not sure how to break this to you kindly, but a fictional character is exactly that. Are you saying that all writers must respect your beliefs and only write characters who hold those beliefs as wonderful kind people and/or tragic victims?

For instance, as a disabled person I'm proud that Davros the creator of the Daleks didn't let disability stop him having a good go at taking over the universe. I know Russell T Davies felt it wasn't nice to portray him as disabled but it's better than being an eternal victim and object of pity.

It wouldn't be hard. However, she does already have West End experience so I'm pretty confident.

She looks better for the part too. Lovely looking child who I am sure will grow into a lovely looking woman, but doesn't have that "supermodel in training" look that Hermione really, really shouldn't have.

I think the new Harry looks absolutely perfect as well.

Although I've seen a few horrible comments online about how he's really a girl and they wouldn't expect JKR to cast a trans kid as Harry Potter.

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 29/09/2025 14:56

Fair to say they chose based on Emma's looks more than talent.

JKR’s response below (copied from Nitter)

J.K. Rowling@jk_rowling11m
I'm seeing quite a bit of comment about this, so I want to make a couple of points.

I'm not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.

Emma Watson and her co-stars have every right to embrace gender identity ideology. Such beliefs are legally protected, and I wouldn't want to see any of them threatened with loss of work, or violence, or death, because of them.

However, Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right - nay, obligation - to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.

When you've known people since they were ten years old it's hard to shake a certain protectiveness. Until quite recently, I hadn't managed to throw off the memory of children who needed to be gently coaxed through their dialogue in a big scary film studio. For the past few years, I've repeatedly declined invitations from journalists to comment on Emma specifically, most notably on the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. Ironically, I told the producers that I didn't want her to be hounded as the result of anything I said.

The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma's 'all witches' speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself. Emma asked someone to pass on a handwritten note from her to me, which contained the single sentence 'I'm so sorry for what you're going through' (she has my phone number). This was back when the death, rape and torture threats against me were at their peak, at a time when my personal security measures had had to be tightened considerably and I was constantly worried for my family's safety. Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames, yet thought a one line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.

Like other people who've never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame, Emma has so little experience of real life she's ignorant of how ignorant she is. She'll never need a homeless shelter. She's never going to be placed on a mixed sex public hospital ward. I'd be astounded if she's been in a high street changing room since childhood. Her 'public bathroom' is single occupancy and comes with a security man standing guard outside the door. Has she had to strip off in a newly mixed-sex changing room at a council-run swimming pool? Is she ever likely to need a state-run rape crisis centre that refuses to guarantee an all-female service? To find herself sharing a prison cell with a male rapist who's identified into the women's prison?

I wasn't a multimillionaire at fourteen. I lived in poverty while writing the book that made Emma famous. I therefore understand from my own life experience what the trashing of women's rights in which Emma has so enthusiastically participated means to women and girls without her privileges.

The greatest irony here is that, had Emma not decided in her most recent interview to declare that she loves and treasures me - a change of tack I suspect she's adopted because she's noticed full-throated condemnation of me is no longer quite as fashionable as it was - I might never have been this honest.

Adults can't expect to cosy up to an activist movement that regularly calls for a friend's assassination, then assert their right to the former friend's love, as though the friend was in fact their mother. Emma is rightly free to disagree with me and indeed to discuss her feelings about me in public - but I have the same right, and I've finally decided to exercise it.

❤️ Burn! 🔥

When she says 'love' she doesn't mean 'love'. She means Hollywood love, which is a sort of fuzzy general pious appearance one drapes over oneself to appear like a Good Person.

This is so true.

More than that, Emma Watson focuses overwhelmingly on emotions. She's all about the love, kindness, self-pity, loyalty (to people like Paris Lees), hurt, sadness. She's just one big old bleeding heart, self-indulgently emoting everywhere.

JKR is fact, reason, nuanced argument and the bigger picture. Which can absolutely provoke an emotional response, but one which is personal to the reader; she doesn't tell us how to feel about the things she writes.

(I wonder if there's a module on this in Watson's Creative Writing course? Maybe she hasn't got to that bit yet.)

Silly girl.

JK is far too clever, constant and dignified in her position to fall for such belated and vapid back-pedalling.

Meanwhile all the communities who hero worshipped EW will now see her as betraying them.

Rather than achieving her aim of a foot in both camps, she will find herself in no-man’s land, and become even less relevant than she was about to be…

The backlash from the TRA crowd reminded me of what happened with Simone Biles. Who, idiot or not, does at least have her exceptional talent and success to fall back on. Emma, not so much.

Christ, don't give her any ideas about being a diplomat!

My favourite story about actors turned diplomats is that, when they were making Psycho 2 (an underrated gem), John Gavin was originally signed up to reprise his role as Sam Loomis, but in the meantime his friend Ronald Reagan had been elected president and appointed Gavin ambassador to Mexico. So Gavin - who turned out to be a quite well respected ambassador - had to be written out.

Thankfully the UK Diplomatic Service doesn't work like that, the occasional Lord Mandelson aside.

I'm not sure a woman who hasn't had an acting role since 2018 really needs to worry about that anymore. Perhaps that's the reason behind her olive branch.

Agree - I was referring to the post HP, UN Ambassador, Beauty and the Beast, Little Women, not a man hater period.

A declaration of love from someone you haven't spoken to for years is creepy as fuck btw. Also more than a little reminiscent of an abusive relationship. JKR has direct experience of that. EW has no empathy at all.

Knowing what the UN is like, I suppose we can only be grateful they didn't make Prince Andrew an Ambassador for Women.

I don't know what I could say to Emma, except... I understand that you're stupidly famous but also, your transition to an adult acting career hasn't worked out. You've done lots of fashion shoots and looked beautiful on red carpets, but you can't do that forever, and anyway now we have Sydney Sweeney.

You don't have to keep yourself in the public eye. Fame can be a terrible addiction. It's perfectly respectable for a former child star to leave show business behind and do other things. Shirley Temple became a diplomat; Frankie Muniz races cars; that lad from Willy Wonka became a vet. You've got the resources to be whatever you put your mind to.

How cool would it be to see a headline in the Daily Mail ten years from now saying "You won't believe what Emma Watson is doing now"? Much cooler than where you are today.

Christ, don't give her any ideas about being a diplomat!

I think it's the kind of feminist that carefully doesn't exclude any key movie going demographics.

Found it. 11 years ago, not 15 but before the gender madness took off. She was already centring the blokes.

in 5 or 10 years, the new Hermione will be in all the papers and magazines and it'll be Emma who? Time will tell what the new girl's position will be on the matter.

I hope the new Hermione has better acting skills.

Another great comment from twitter: "When you don’t just bite the hand that feeds you, you maul it in public and then encourage others to do the same, you should not be hurt when that hand writes a public reply."

yeah. If I was dealing with a woman who had actively exacerbated a situation where I was worried about the safety of my children I wouldn’t be this nice.

I like the claiming of her work in that statement too . ‘Characters I created’. Too right JKR, too right.

They came for her reputation and her creation.

I recall she gave a speech at the UN around 15 years ago about how feminism needs to be better at including men. She’s a 100% pick me libfem.

No Emma, feminism needs to be better at showing women why it is relevant to their lives and how it can actually help them.
