I do not agree with you. Nothing is proven and this isn't a courtroom FFS! Why don't we assume that the young woman is feeling vulnerable or uncomfortable or unsure at the start of university not that she is a pathological liar? I know which sounds more likely.

I'm thinking about the mum being lied to about a subject that obviously makes her distressed which is why the daughter chose it. If OP was the type to panic about drug use, she would be saying that students are doing crack in the lecture halls.

No, she isn't the one who should be embarrassed, the people who can't help themselves and want to get a good kicking in on this thread are the ones that need to have a think about how they treat other people.

Lying to your mother to pretend that you are in danger of men waving their dicks at you instead of saying "mum i am really not doing well" is highly problematic. Mum has come on here saying something silly and has been rigorously proven wrong. It's embarrassing for her.

Yes i know Costa has toilets but since we have established her uni has perfectly safe toilets for her to use, she is going there for other reasons. That is pretty obvious.

And @cigarsmokingwoman does not seem ridiculous to me. She sounds like a mum worried about her daughter. She has not been humiliated in the least.

Seriously, I don't think there is any reason to call the young woman a liar. As a pp said, men do urinate with the doors open. Hell, it happened to me at work. There's a disabled loo opposite the lifts in a small corridor and a man left the door open there while he was peeing. I was disgusted and I'm a fifty year old member of staff! Likely she knows it's gender neutral or has been told this, and she's distressed about it.

That's why we discuss it here in the feminism board because hey...women fought for the right for safety and dignity.

2nd floor of the library
2nd floor of the Cottrell building (including one by the stairwell and room 2B3.

There are many others identified but that should help for starters.

I should have compassion for someone who worried their mother with silly lies? I do actually have a little compassion for her and that is why I am saying that her family should find out why she is telling these lies to send her mother into a panic. It is likely because she is struggling at uni.

Yes I agree @IwantToRetire it's a shame this thread has been derailed and also there are those questioning the op's daughter. Who, like me when I started at Stirling uni, is only 17. And if she's like me, I was a young 17.

I'm wondering if perhaps she witnessed male students peeing in cubicals with the doors open and in her panic thought it meant urinals? Lots of men do this according to my DH. If urinals are not available they will go to a cubical and leave the door open to stand and pee. It's madness to me, but probably they are so used to standing and peeing in front of other men that they wouldn't even think to close a cubical door to block the view of them in the communal area.

For women the toilet dynamics are just so much more complex and different. Menstrual bleeding, cramps, issues after child birth, urinary infections etc. Women have different needs. That not only require longer in the toilet, but more privacy. As usual, gender neutral toilets are impacting women more. However that's not to say some men also don't like it. I walked into one in Edinburgh last year and the man there already was equally as flustered as me when we came face to face. No one wants this.

As much as I'm loathe to recommend the Burrell museum (due to their platforming of a violent, threatening misogynist in one of their video displays) I actually think what they've done with the toilets is the way forward. Male, female, accessible/family changing AND gender neutral. Obviously being a big venue they can do this, but it's just really sad that this thread has been derailed and also the op has been minimised. @cigarsmokingwoman please reassure your daughter, find out what's happening and see if you can speak to someone who's a responsible adult at Stirling. Despite the issues I spoke about in my first post, I actually did have a good time when studying there once I found my feet.

We have found out a bit about OP's daughter, she is maybe a bit younger than many in starting life at university.

She may well have not seen or not felt able to ask about toilets.

Or got confused by the signposting.

I hope all those smug knowitalls dont have daughters who maybe need a bit of hand holding.

There's a really strange element of posting that seems to be happening on FWR now. Nasty and sanctimonious.

Also too lazy to read threads, as it would be obvious by now that many more sympathetic posters have provided information.

It would be sad if this type of hostility to someone asking a question that many of us feel someone should know that, dont take the more generous position, that it is because they dont that that they are asking the question.

Why did your daughter lie to you about the urinals OP? It would have been embarrassing for you had you complained to the university and then they’d explained that no urinals in any of the mixed toilets

And also if she uses maze map which she will know about as it’s linked on the student app, she will be able to find the many female toilets by searching female toilets. Also I left it to long to edit but I meant cottrell over the bridge not pathfoot, the female toilets in cottrel are easy to find and clearly signposted and the first ones are literally as you enter the building from the bridge, the first corridor on the right.

Stirling uni still has many female toilets with no urinals unless they’ve changed it in the last day, pathfoot building, first on the right as you come over the bridge, separate men’s and women’s on that corridor, and the women’s has no urinals just cubicals. As well as many others, there is zero need for her to be holding it until she gets home

My younger (by 22 years!) sister attends sterling university. She says that there are no gender neutral toilets with urinals at the university.

And I see a PP quoted as such from the university’s website.

OP, a separate issue is that your daughter appears to have fibbed to you.

This is a thread asking for advice and help.

No one has to respond to deliberate derailers.

If you are that easy to poke into getting caught up in their nonsense it justs encourages them. And the cycle continues.

It is bad enough on a discussion thread but to indulge them on a thread asking for help and support is just so upsetting and disturbing.

I hope OP has got some positives out of this thread, but can imagine thinking of giving up on it.
