What to call the wokerati

I realise this isn’t directly a FWR question, but I’m keen to hear opinions from reasonable people.
What is a sensible term to use to describe people we might term woke and that Americans call Liberal progressives?
People who believe in gender ideology, critical race theory, term anyone who disagrees with them fascists, term mainstream (imo) conservative opinions far right and who in the USA are currently trampling on Charlie Kirk memorials both physically and metaphorically.
It’s driving me crackers hearing these people described as liberal - when they’re authoritarian, progressives - when they promote regressive policies, kind - when they seem incapable of common decency.
Woke for me fits the bill - but it’s a difficult term that can be deflected.
Any ideas?

I use the term Blue MAGA (for the ones in the USA).

I do think that gets across how they are just as willing as Red MAGA to refuse to think critically, refuse to believe the evidence of their eyes, and wholeheartedly endorse cult-like beliefs that I think they secretly don't actually believe, but feel like they need to say they do because that's the political tribe they identify with.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 20/10/2025 10:02

I should perhaps explain my previous post. Any term can be used to dismiss the opinions of someone you see as belonging to a group you disapprove of. I was not trying to suggest that American Christian Conservatism is the equivalent of "woke", but that it was used to dismiss someone and his opinions. It is easy to dismiss ideas without really understanding them, and that is the big problem with cultural divisions in our societies.

No idea why this is in the feminism section. I'm not on board with gender ideology but am a feminist. I think critical race theory is grounded in well researched academic principles and people who bung it under an umbrella of 'woke' as an insult are either thick or haven't bothered to look any of it up. I also think Charlie Kirk was a misogynist right wing nut and in any case a mouthpiece for American Christian Conservatism - nothing to do with British conservatism which is not really all that Christian at its root. Not sure how any feminist could have any respect for him alive or dead (though people being murdered is wrong whether they are shot by a lunatic, killed in a school shooting, or put to death by the state).

So perhaps don't try to have a catch-all term when only people who are trying to brainwash you try to create a word for "the kind of people who scare you"?

If all else fails, there's always this

From a meme I saw on FB - it says D.I.L.D.O.S.
(Desperate Intolerant Liberals Destroying Our Society.)
American obviously but it seems to cover it.

@BedlingtonFloof They cover a wide range of positions, and on the whole are opposed to bullying!

No, they're absolutely fine with bullying if you don't agree with them, even on a single point. They behave like the fascists they accuse other people of being.

Every time I hear the word progressive I am reminded of The Real IRA. Not because they're terroristsSmile but because The Real IRA chose a name that made a claim, and every time they were spoken of (e.g. on the news) as The Real IRA the automatic thought that went through my head was 'but they're not, are they? If they were they wouldn't have to keep saying so'.

These days I see the Corbyn/Sultana party in the same light, calling it the Your Party as a supposed interim name but in reality it's quite clever, insinuating subconsciously that Your Party is the party for you, in the same way The Real IRA inferred that they were genuine and The IRA had somehow fallen by the wayside. Likewise naming your party Reform, because every political party uses the word reform.

I think progressive is, like The Real IRA, a total misnomer. Those who claim to be so, very rarely are; and as such I am most reluctant to use that word for people who are the total opposite.

So I'd go with Authoritarian Regressive.

I’ve found that the so called anti woke are arseholes.

So are the “woke” though, although I hate the term. I actually agree with them on more stuff than I don’t, but I can’t stand the way they act like bullies if you dare to disagree with them on a single point.

Screamingabdabz · 16/10/2025 21:58

Not all wokeness is bad imo. And you just sound like an old fart if you say woke (it’s become a parody now) so I call it ‘playing gender-wang’.

SidewaysOtter · 16/10/2025 21:53

Omnicausers?

Because they all seem to be of a similar mindset on the whole trans rights, climate change, Palestine, queer theory, critical race theory, Black Lives Matter and colonialism shebang.

Bullshit it's about calling people names, the OP was clearly about trying to pin down a reasonably accurate description of the undepinning ideology.

Some people in the past have used neo-marxist, which is not totally wrong but not great. Identarian isn't too bad. I can see why someone above suggested left populism, and I think that's accurate as far as it goes, but there could be left populists who aren't identarians, so it may not be specific enough.

None of those seem totally satisfying, but there is a kind of unified thinking around many of the ideologies embraced by the people in question..

I don't think left populism works at all. Gender ideology is pretty central, and you can describe that many ways, but it's the opposite of populist.

This may be an unpopular view on FWR where 'populist' is often used as a boo-word.

I don't think neo-marxist works either, because Marxism is materialist and this is the opposite.

The thing is - Freddie DeBoer, who I'm not a particular fan of, but he hits some nails on the head and has been saying this for years - there's clearly an underlying ideology, but nobody who holds to that ideology will name it or sketch out its precepts. They're likely to deny there is an ideology at all.

You can call it woke, or call it critical social justice, or think of another name that's more descriptive. But there's something there, and wokelords saying PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN doesn't negate the existence of the ideology.

GCornotGCthatisthequestion · 17/09/2025 17:47

If you want people to listen to you or open their minds I would suggest that you articulate what you are actually referring to rather than using buzzards like "woke".

It's meaningless. It's used in the same way as PC gone mad used to be

It's still very relevant. It now means..being so open minded, your brains have fallen out.

Is it about 'calling people names' though? Or an attempt to find a way to describe someone's general political leanings?

Have a look at some of the suggestions that have been rolling in and see if you think it's genuinely about labelling for ease of discussion, or actually just about name-calling.

One delightful PP was too cowardly to actually type her phrase of choice but hinted that it was "woketard".

@DEAROP is right. This thread is embarrassing.

It's just about calling people names.

General political leanings are so widespread that chances are if you agree with anti-woke rhetoric, you're probably, inadvertently disagreeing with some of your own beliefs. An example on this thread is the notion that feminism is anti-woke.

Its better to vocalise and challenge individual beliefs.

The term woke may have been invented by the Black community but the received meanings of words do change with time.

See also 'woman' - in current parlance apparently also meaning biological men who think that they are women

I'm old enough to remember crusty old colonels writing in to the Telegraph to complain that 'gay' used to mean cheerful.

Fast forward a couple of decades and Stonewall were trying to stop schoolkids using 'gay' to mean naff, as in 'your trainers are gay'.

I think this boils down to the colloquial use of words changes, except when they're words that progressive activists like, and then they have to be treated with scriptural reverence.

It's got to work both ways.

How many threads have there been on the FWR boards where the OP starts with a TWAW point of view, there are pages and pages of logical arguments backed up with facts as to why women disagree and it ends up with the OP being offended and accusing everyone of being mean?

I think phrasing it as "women disagree" is inaccurate though. We know not all women agree with your view, my view, or Sharon's view. We aren't a monolith.

Cultural appropriation? You've lost me now.
And I'm definitely not getting into a discussion about the logistics of completely open borders

I supplied a link where it explains the history of the term. Read it and you won't be lost. I never said you need to debate anything. I pointed out that people don't necessarily hold a whole group of views just because they feel one way about one topic.

MagpiePi · 16/10/2025 09:39

GCornotGCthatisthequestion · 17/09/2025 18:58

I think we, as a society have got worse at listening to those that disagree with us.

Do you listen when this particular group speak?

It's about calling people names. If you wanted to describe their political leanings, you'd say people who are pro trans rights. Or anti-immigration, or disability activists or whatever they are. You don't need a catch all term that speaks about totally different subjects. For example, I could be described as the wokerati as some of my views are very liberal if that's what you want to call it. I'd have the borders wide open.

There are other subjects where I am really quite conservative though and they dont go hand in hand with my pro-immigration views at all.

So not only would it be immature and cultural appropriation to term anyone who disagrees with you on one issue as part of the wokerati, it could also be highly inaccurate. Overall, I cannot believe the site allow this sort of nonsense to stand. It is really scummy

"describing someone's general political leanings" is a very neutral way of rewriting this threads OP though isn't it?
