Couldn’t see a thread on this.
In the latest of Breastfeeding batshittery..‘Breastfeeding and Lactation Support UK’ have today posted this.

I am so angered by it. The UK breastfeeding rates are amongst some of the lowest globally. We should be empowering women, not erasing them. Encouraging them to leave if they disagree?? They should be ashamed.

Using ‘babe’ and ‘doll’ is fine, however.

Yes It appears her inclusivity is not very inclusive. I feel personally offended at those gendered terms. Unless of course she is referring to the “dolls” we all must protect. In which case, she’s fine.

Errr how am I transphobic? I’m pointing out your trabsphobia. You’ve denied transmen thrir identity, excluded transwomen and your group name should be Chestfeeding and lactation. A lot of folx find “breastfeeding” to be problematic. I thought you were supposed to be an inclusive group?

You have googled the definition for lactation… right?

“Breastfeeding and lactation” is inclusive to all.

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 21:53

Exactly this!!! Reducing someone to their parental status is rude and dismissive. Yes if I'm talking to a baby is say 'oh here's mummy' but what talking to the actual parent id use their name to address them.

This woefully dismal attitude towards motherhood reflects really badly on you.

I know you feel you are being impressively progressive but actually your ideology is regressive and moreover, it's a stale fad that stopped being edgy around 2017. If you are financially dependant on making a career for yourself then I would urge you reconsider this pose of yours, for your own sake obviously, as your clearly are not the altruistic caring type.

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 22:05

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 such a troll

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 22:05

Yep coz once again I don't have to be professional on Mumsnet 🤣

wintergolds · 16/09/2025 22:04

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 22:01

It's not a new update doll it's been implemented for many years it's stated all over the group it's not hidden from members. We've been fully open inclusive since 2022 ISH!!.

And some may like to be called mum but I'm not their 'friend' or family member I am a health care professional so I will address been as so. If someone specifically asked for me to call them mum then of course I would also respect that too.

Are you assuming I identify as a doll or that everybody likes being called one?
Is being rude how we do #bekind?

Lavender14 · 16/09/2025 22:04

wintergolds · 16/09/2025 21:57

You’re assuming they don’t like being called mums. You make it sound like an insult - ‘reducing’. Well, no. For some of us it’s more important than our own identity- it’s like being called ‘Queen’ rather than a name. You’re very disrespectful to women who have just become mums and want to embrace and enjoy it.

I do hope all your members see that update so they can then show you with their actions how they feel about your attempts to be inclusive. May be send them it in an email?

But not all new parents or mums do feel that way? Becoming a mother can be really complex for lots of women and not all women do embrace and enjoy it for loads of valid reasons. If you do, then that's great and I'm happy that you do, but surely there's also space to acknowledge that not all women feel that way or experience it that way. And that can carry a lot of shame and guilt for women who struggle with it which can be really isolating. Same can apply to men around becoming a parent as well. It's important that people are allowed space to decide how they feel about it rather than people presuming that they must feel a particular way. That could really shut down important conversations around PPD, ACEs, DV or SA etc which people deserve to be able to open up about.

Coatsoff42 · 16/09/2025 22:03

And this abuse is typing ‘hey mamas’ at the start of a message?

menopausalmare · 16/09/2025 22:03

I'm so glad the breast feeding years are behind me.
What have I just read?
Gender identity is more important than supporting mothers and babies
The word mama is apparently derogatory and gives a midwife the ick.
Any women who disagrees is asked to leave the session
No wonder breast feeding rates are so low.

Namelessnelly · 16/09/2025 22:03

I will be recommending all my trans and NB friends do so. You seem very uneducated and slightly TERFy. I’ll recommend LLL, they’re much more inclusive and supportive of trans folx

Well take abuse towards ourselves we wouldn't allow patients to abuse other patients.

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 22:01

They can find another group and another midwife if they want.

Namelessnelly · 16/09/2025 22:01

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 21:57

How are you not getting the fact we allow ANYONE who lactates? Regardless of their gender identity.

But you said you excluded biological men. Also you said you only supported females but some males lactate too. How can you support any males who lactate? Or are they excluded from your “inclusive” group? And do please point out my transphobia or apologise.

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 22:01

Staff don’t take abuse! Staff take abuse all day long. Now I know you aren’t an HCP.

MisssCackle · 16/09/2025 21:59

STMWBec · 16/09/2025 21:55

It's not unprofessional to use inclusive language in fact the opposite.
I'm also not alienating women there's plenty of women in the group. If someone was being a transphobe in a professional place they'd also be asked to leave. Staff don't take abuse.

Edited

There are women, mothers in this group (that have been in ‘yours’) who you have stuck your finger up to and refused to listen to.

I’d be asking for another midwife.

You're incorrect but okay, I work with health care professionals seeing new parents on a daily basis we don't reduce them to their parental status we respect them and use their names.

I see that you have an inflated perception of the breadth of your experience. But I think its a nice ideal to have with regards to calling women by their names. It just amused me that you were so certain that was standard practise across the country. I guess there are still many health professionals in dire need of you to enlighten them :)

Trans men are very aware of their biology. Me referring to someone as their preferred pronouns, whether that matches their biological sex or not, does nothing but validate their existence. It’s ok if you wish to continue to be closed minded and exclusionary.

I support mothers, parents, dads, trans men, non binary people, anyone who needs/wants it. And their pronouns are respected by me. You’re arguing for the sake of arguing here.

Wow!and the transphobia continues. You are the ones excluding lots of folx. Trying to cover up your transphobia by “I help everyone”. Sure Jan. you carry on with your bigotry. Or educate yourself and do better.

If it’s really her then feel free to stand up for herself.

I am saying if it is her, I am astounded. It’s hugely unprofessional. I disagree with a midwife alienating women in such an aggressive manner. If that’s what you mean by ‘chat shit’.

Happy to have a sensible discussion about it.

Yes it’s her, and you’re still doubting that, why?

she’s been patient and explained things plenty of times here yet you’re all still digging at her when she says something you don’t like.

why are you still here arguing? I don’t understand what else there is for her to say. Why aren’t you getting it?

I think any time I ever saw a HCP with my ds I was referred to by my name unless they were referring to me when talking to my ds. And I appreciated that, I think when we reduce women to 'just' mummy that has wider reaching ramifications that I would have expected to be acknowledged on a feminist board, not least right to bodily autonomy, impact on women as primary caregiver and career etc. Obviously in a high stress scenario who gives a shit, but no I wouldn't expect to not be referred to by my name, especially given that post partum you are also the patient yourself as you're recovering etc.

I do agree with this.
