JKR accused of 'quoting hitler'

Within the context of condemning political violence following the murder of Charlie Kirk, she quoted on X a line from Mein Kampf where Hitler talked about how he utilised political violence for his own gain. This was a clear statement in how allowing for political violence against one's rivals can lead to that in power manipulating things in order to harm others.

Unfortunately, articles are springing up across the internet shaming JKR for quoting or referring to this text at all, with many condemning her for 'nazi' views and accusing her of being far right.

(Personally I love JK, and it is such a shame that every single thing she says is twisted to mean the opposite of what she's actually saying!)

JKR has done a Holocaust minimisation by quoting Mein Kampf by Hitler just to tweet a basic moral comment that murder is wrong no matter how awful you may think a person’s opinions are.

This is categorically antisemitic.

Keep in mind, Mein Kampf (My Battle) isn’t wholly a memoir. The part she quoted, he wasn’t writing about how he used political violence for his own gain, he was writing his plan for success.- “'The very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence."

Chillingly, Hitler defined success as a Germany rid of Jews (Judenrein), because he thought Jews were subhumans.

She has literally compared the murderer of a minor political activist to Hitler himself, and the plan for this murder to Hilter’s plan for the genocide of millions of Jewish people. Both plans ‘succeeded.’

I should not need to say that this is Holocaust minimisation and JKR should receive a lot of flak for this.

The memory of the Holocaust isn’t to be appropriated like that to shock jock a public controversy so you get those tons of views and upvotes on X (which can be monetised - not that she needs more money).

Yes JKR, murder is wrong. Try and post that without disrespecting the Holocaust. If you really feel a need to mention ‘fascism’ you can also do that without quoting Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf!!

While I agree with you in principle, I wouldn't put CK and JKR in the same category as examples of 'picking a few words out of a larger discussion' .

CK was a proud and outspoken conservative. There are plenty of direct quotes to show what he believed, and he openly and explicitly opposed many of the rights and freedoms other people hold dear. There's no need to pick out a few of his words and twist their meaning - he was very clear in his expression of his opinions.
He was entitled to his opinions, and it is despicable that he was murdered because of them.

However, JKR's brief reference to, and quotation of, Hitler were maliciously taken completely out of context, and it is obvious from everything else she has said, written and done that they do not in any way represent her actual beliefs and opinions.

One of the interesting things about Kirk is just how good his trust rating are. In a world where politicians are not trusted this is extraordinary.

But then you look at all those deliberately edit in a way which makes it much worse than the context, it means that the trust is lost in the latter group and maybe even gained for Kirk because he is being honest in his views even if they are unpalatable.

Trust in authority is something that's central to the whole subject and we shouldn't be losing sight of this.

”The Witch Trials of JK Rowling” podcast goes into this in some detail. She was already seeing some interesting aspects of human behaviour in fan communities long before she took a stand against the misogynist sex denialism.

And given her interest in how the dark side of human nature can be harnessed to bring about totalitarianism, you can bet she was noticing the growing problem quite some time before she spoke up.

Yes, I was thinking about that podcast when I wrote my post, actually 😃

She's already been exposed to peoples extreme attitudes to her, both ends of the scale.

It's got to be weird. Adored beyond all reason on the one hand, and hated beyond all reason, on the other.

😂😂😂

So the TRA's think Billionairess JK Rowling has black mould in her home?

She doesn't live in a grotty bedsit above a takeaway. What the fuck is wrong with them all?

I know. Plus she makes sure it's in a selfie.

Frankly, I've no fucking idea how they manage to wield any kind of influence at all. Most people would just cross the street to avoid them

Year or so ago she posted a selfie in her home. TRAs gleefully jumped on it and claimed walls showed a pattern of mould (it was almost certainly shadows or wallpaper, of course) and ever since claim her 'heinous bigotry' is the result of mould on the brain.

This is considered biting wit and devastating satire in TRAworld and is still oft-cited.

Selective quoting has been going on forever and is sadly a well known trick used by all political persuasions.

I'm old enough to remember this often still quoted 'gem' from the 1980s:

A comment from a Woman’s Own interview in 1987 is often repeated, but rarely in context: ”There is no such thing as society”. Its relevance was made explicit with the publication of the second volume of Margaret Thatcher’s autobiography in 1993:

“they never quoted the rest. I went on to say: There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It’s our duty to look after ourselves and then to look after our neighbour. My meaning, clear at the time but subsequently distorted beyond recognition, was that society was not an abstraction, separate from the men and women who composed it, but a living structure of individuals, families, neighbours and voluntary associations.“

This is exactly what has happened with Charlie Kirk. People pick a few words out of a larger discussion and others accept it as "evidence" of something they want to believe anyway.. Too prepared to hate and no desire to do their due diligence.

I'm finding the selective quoting disconcerting and troubling. When you see the longer quotes he's saying something completely different. It's total misrepresentation and nothing more than propaganda. This makes me listen harder to longer sections of what Charlie Kirk was saying to really try and understand what he was saying. This doesn't mean I agree with him but it does alienate from those saying Charlie Kirk is evil.

It's harming those misrepresenting more than those who said what is being presented as 'verboten'.

I want this on a poster. With a 'motivational' picture.

Hitler is a bit like farts, in online discussion terms. If you mention him, you're literally as bad as him. You smelt it, you dealt it.

It seems a weirdly pseudo religious belief, bit like mention the devil and he will appear.

You're welcome Grin

Besides which it's highly doubtful whether Hitler had any clear vision of genocide at the time he wrote Mein Kampf. Certainly there was no thought yet of the horrific form it eventually took.

Hitler was not some uniquely evil devil man with an evil master plan to murder Europe's Jews that he eventually achieved, although this is a nice easy way to think about the Third Reich. His racism and antisemitism were commonplace and it's all much more complicated than that.

Thedogscollar · 16/09/2025 12:00

Christ on a bike! It's as clear as the nose on your face what she's saying.

As you say OP there's no accounting for people's stupidity.

Those who don't like JKR will use anything against her.

The woman is articulate, very knowledgeable and extremely clever and that's what the haters don't like. She can put her point across without stooping to their level.

Hmmm… so when I got assigned readings from Mein Kampf in a university history course, was the lecturer engaged in Holocaust minimisation? Was I?

Given that I quoted it to fulfil an essay requirement and the history course included details of Hitler’s murders of … what was it again? ‘Minor political activist’.

Hitler’s evil did not start with the Holocaust. It started with the Brownshirts. JKR is right; murdering minor political activists because you don’t like their views is exactly how this starts.

The memory of Hitler is pretty universal and the warning against getting under the spell of someone like him or his sort of ideas is a lesson for everyone for all time.

This memory and warning simply cannot be owned exclusively by those who were victims of the holocaust imo.

JKR is not being anti-Semitic. To suggest she is does not help Jewish victims of the holocaust.

Oh for god's sake . Saying it's a nice day is Holocaust denial. And transphobia. I'll think of why later.

There is no logic.

They have decided she is Satan incarnate and won't listen to anything that is actually said.

I think it's very familiar to anyone who has brought up (less than perfectly well behaved) teenagers.

My own daughter because she's 16 considers everything I say, think and do to be bad because she is 16, she needs to push back even when I'm trying to help her and, possibly most importantly, she has poor mental health starting with an eating disorder.

Her opinion of the human race would be very interesting.

Given all the original controversy and backlash in the US through writing a book on witchcraft, the global adoration of her fans, and now the spectacularly awful picking apart of her every word in order to find a letter that doesn't look right.

Seeing human beings so much in the raw would be rather shocking. It could easily send a less stable person right round the twist.

”The Witch Trials of JK Rowling” podcast goes into this in some detail. She was already seeing some interesting aspects of human behaviour in fan communities long before she took a stand against the misogynist sex denialism.

Wasn’t she actually using the quote to suggest that anyone advocating violence is similar to Hitler? She was hardly endorsing it — the very reverse!

Aren’t all these people just extremely bad at reading comprehension and understanding? It is a pretty idiotic reading of the tweet not to realise it was suggesting that they are like Hitler, not that she is.

This is exactly what has happened with Charlie Kirk. People pick a few words out of a larger discussion and others accept it as "evidence" of something they want to believe anyway.. Too prepared to hate and no desire to do their due diligence.

Nope. They are verboten texts. We are not allowed to examine them and critically analyse them or use them as warnings.

This then gives them special status and means lots of people will seek them out purely because of their verboten status.

Honestly, these people who think banning everything solves the worlds problems need to get out more.

It‘s the same mindset that leads to authors and filmmakers being cancelled if they write a character who has less than perfectly moral views. It can never be because it’s a literary device, oh no - it must be because it’s the creator’s own belief and it must be BANNED.
