So being asked about Hitler and replying with evidence in the form of a source quote by ...Hitler (in unfavourable terms and being clear that his methods were a Bad Thing) is Holocaust denial, is it?

Interested to know from our current crop of TRA exchange students how History degrees (or indeed A-levels and GCSEs, since not sure they'd be able to speak from personal experience yet) work these days then?

I think it's very familiar to anyone who has brought up (less than perfectly well behaved) teenagers.

My own daughter because she's 16 considers everything I say, think and do to be bad because she is 16, she needs to push back even when I'm trying to help her and, possibly most importantly, she has poor mental health starting with an eating disorder.

Selective quoting has been going on forever and is sadly a well known trick used by all political persuasions.

I'm old enough to remember this often still quoted 'gem' from the 1980s:

JKR has done a Holocaust minimisation by quoting Mein Kampf by Hitler just to tweet a basic moral comment that murder is wrong no matter how awful you may think a person’s opinions are.

This is categorically antisemitic.

Keep in mind, Mein Kampf (My Battle) isn’t wholly a memoir. The part she quoted, he wasn’t writing about how he used political violence for his own gain, he was writing his plan for success.- “'The very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence."

Chillingly, Hitler defined success as a Germany rid of Jews (Judenrein), because he thought Jews were subhumans.

She has literally compared the murderer of a minor political activist to Hitler himself, and the plan for this murder to Hilter’s plan for the genocide of millions of Jewish people. Both plans ‘succeeded.’

I should not need to say that this is Holocaust minimisation and JKR should receive a lot of flak for this.

The memory of the Holocaust isn’t to be appropriated like that to shock jock a public controversy so you get those tons of views and upvotes on X (which can be monetised - not that she needs more money).

Yes JKR, murder is wrong. Try and post that without disrespecting the Holocaust. If you really feel a need to mention ‘fascism’ you can also do that without quoting Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf!!

One of the interesting things about Kirk is just how good his trust rating are. In a world where politicians are not trusted this is extraordinary.

But then you look at all those deliberately edit in a way which makes it much worse than the context, it means that the trust is lost in the latter group and maybe even gained for Kirk because he is being honest in his views even if they are unpalatable.

Trust in authority is something that's central to the whole subject and we shouldn't be losing sight of this.
