BBC is reporting on women dying in childbirth in Afghanistan

They get the Darwin Award, eventually becoming a country of old men sat around shaking their heads wondering what happened.

But… but… but… Taliban culture is equal to ours isn’t it?

So Taliban deny women basic rights including health care and the right to speak to other women, Trump stops funding the Taliban, and BBC blames Trump for women dying?

Surely it is both. These things are both actively worsening conditions for women

I wish I could support the BBC whole-heartedly. But this is the kind of nonsense that's dragging it down. It used to be independent, honest, impartial and therefore trusted worldwide. Now, blaming a US politician they don't like for the deaths of women under a theocracy that treats them worse than animals? I'm embarrassed for the BBC.

Truly evil. Do other Muslim nations have the same revulsion at what these men are doing to their Muslim sisters? Why is this a western problem to solve? I thought Islam was supposed to be enlightened and protective of women?

In fact there are no records according to World Bank data of FGM in Afgahanistan. FGM is not a specifically Muslim practice.

However yes the mortality rate for women in Afghanistan is terrible, and likely to get worse as female doctors and midwives have been banned, and many women are mal nourished.

And despite those who like to swipe at the UN they are one of the largest providers of health care and food globally.

In another article I haven't posted they were discussing the impact of Trumps near total cancelation of health aid, plus the UK stopping its programmes, both of which will directly impact women subject to FGM.

Not made an better by the fact that fundamentalist US Christian organisers are planning to offer support insteand. But of course linked to strict Christian "values". ie no contraception or abortion.

Women as usual left to the mercy of self important men who think their beliefs should be imposed on women.

Meanwhile on the thread we are discussing the BMJ argument in favour of FGM. Decolonisation.

At least some of these deaths will be down to FGM which will make natural childbirth more complicated.

I agree, its really difficult to know.

News stories imply that if anything it has got worse lately. That there were some women working together quietly, but that now they too have been shut down.

But then it could be the media just making sweeping statements.

Or the possibility that there are still some women's networks and groups, that in fact to keep themselves safe they dont publicise who they are, and it is all word of mouth.

Honestly this is why I'm asking. Because I have been trying to find charities to donate to who can support women on the ground, maybe change things or at least get women out. It's so hard to tell from websites etc who can do something concrete - and probably the groups who can, if indeed anyone can, are not going to publicise it.

So really I'm wondering if there's any charities who are maybe not directly active but able to support groups who are.

This is such an awful situation and will lead to unrest, women and children paying a terrible price for this insanity. I don’t think there is anything that can be done as the Taliban have now cut off wi-fi across the whole country (there is still limited dial-up internet, but there is no privacy using dial-up).

No I was saying in the context of getting aid, support to women in Afghanistan.

From their web site it is clear they are support Afghan women in this country.

But maybe just email them.

Their web site says they are sending money to a group training women to become midwives, which according to news media is no longer allowed by the Taliban.

Maybe this is still going on underground.

So email them, and if you find out lets us know.

That we shouldn't let the MSM be the only source of information.

So are you saying it's not worth donating to charities that are trying to help?

I was going to try to donate to them via my work GAYE but trying to change the charities has been an impossible task so I'd given up today. But from what you are saying it might not be worth it anyway.

There is no evidence they are able to function in Afghanistan any more than local women can.

And if you saw the news today about the British couple who have now been released, they were arrested / detained because one part of their service was to support women.

Of course helping women who have had, been able, to flee Afghanistan is great.

But in terms of the OP no funding seems to be reaching groups in Afghanistan, and the concept of support, training online, now cant work because the Taliban have cut internet connections.

Why do they want women to die in childbirth? Who do they think is going to look after the babies (including the male ones!)

I read this. It annoyed me that the US is blamed. Nope - it's the Taliban.

No time to find links, but yesterday the news was reporting that the internet connection in one region has been cut.

And today that it looks like this is happening across the country.

I wonder if they too have now heard about online support for women.

I appreciate this may be a daft question given these are secret but are there any charities I can donate to who may be able to route funds into supporting efforts like this?
