Terrible. We need look out for ourselves and where possible other women, given the police seem far too unreliable and there is rising misogyny is various forms- in this case apparently aggravated by racism..

On mumsnet? Ok

Opportunity, vulnerability and hatred of women. Rape is motivated less by sex and more by the desire for control and power.

GagMeWithASpoon · 13/09/2025 07:31

The same concept applies to assaults and murder so I don’t understand why some posters struggle with it being applied in the case of rape too.

Did no one read the article?

They apparently said “you don’t belong here get out” as they were doing so this is probably why it’s classed as a hate crime??

Fgs yes we did

and if you read the thread, we are debating it

I can absolutely see where you're coming from, because rape is a crime of hate by definition and the basic reason behind all rapes is that men wish to violate women, children or other men in some way.

But personally I think it is important to understand the nuance behind that hate. So if there is a rise in racially motivated rape, it's probably due to an underlying rise in racial hatred, and that also needs to be tackled to solve the issue.

Same, with the grooming gangs- yes, any grooming is hateful and wrong; but the refusal to name the underlying reasons behind them- the views some communities had towards young white girls- meant they weren't tackled adequately and effectively were allowed to continue.

If you can't name your enemy, you can't deal with it, Iyswim?

With grooming gangs these were vulnerable girls, in care or from very troubled homes which is what made them vulnerable and also why the police ignore them as they saw them as deserving or trouble or trash.

they have a lot to answer for and they’re hiding behind political correctness. When they were doing what they always doing which is profiling working class and troubled girls as “lying slags”

Anyway, going back to the topic. This really resonates with me because I live five mins from the edge of the Oldbury district. Until a year ago I actually worked in Oldbury for a Sikh run business (and my previous employer was also Sikh run - I worked for a fairly large company and then a smaller startup created by one of the directors of the previous company).

The head office wasn't in Oldbury, was in a nearby town, but many of my workmates were Sikhs from the area. Given how tight knit the community is I'd not be surprised at all if some of them knew the victim or her extended family.

The family will very very much shut down and keep this as private as possible from extended family, neighbours and friends.

It would be looked at in the balance of evidence and the fact that the alleged victim was drunk and the alleged perpetrator had only had one or was sober would be taken into consideration. If they were both drunk I think there would have to be something else to support the allegation of rape, which typically is hard to prove at the best of times.

NotMyNigelFarage · 12/09/2025 20:54

Google is telling me that some training mentions one drink, so maybe the argument is that in some cases it should be avoided entirely as people's tolerance various. Perhaps that's more safeguarding guidance etc. But in general you seem to be right about it being based on impairment.

NotMyNigelFarage · 12/09/2025 20:52

TheJoyOfWriting · 12/09/2025 19:53

Hang on..I thought the law was that you can't consent if you're extremely drunk? Not if you've just had a couple of glasses.

And imo 2 drunk people having sex : that depends if one has drunk a lot more than the other and is unable to consent. If they have both drunk a bit, ofc they can still consent.

People keep moaning among Gen Z not drinking but as a Gen Z, I am glad that we'll have less of these cases, and also less drunken regretted sex. There are other ways to build relationships and have fun

Actually, you seem to be right. I'm not sure where I got the idea that as soon as alcohol was involved you can't consent.

I think the problem is that the OP title is not what has been reported ie that a woman has been raped, which is shocking enough, but in terms of the charge the rape was "aggravated" by another crime.

in the same way as sometimes a charge of rape is aggravated by additional violence.

So not sure the point of speculating.

Of course when and if there is a court case evidence might give an indication if it was in fact "motivated" by racism.

I always find threads like this a bit strange.

ie projecting what are at this stage nothing more that what individuals are thinking.

I am so sorry this woman has suffered this act of male violence.

Maybe we should leave her in peace instead of publicly speculating about the volence she has suffered.

Nailed itn

Why the need to deny a racial element? While I also find the idea you could be a rapist and simultaneously genuinely respect any woman absurd, I can also well believe that women can be targeted on the basis of race and other characteristics. I can also believe that being targeted in this way compounds the woman’s suffering. That’s before you get into the wider effects on particular groups and society as a whole.

Recognising this in no way diminishes the fact that all rape is abhorrent violence.

This.

Why not? OK, maybe race was incidentally not motivator but it's important to be aware of all possibilities.

The one area that slightly throws me off is the whole consent element (bear with me here).

I believe that consent can't be given after one has had a drink. So does that mean that two drunk people having sex have raped each other?

Being serious, though, I've initiated sex many times in situations where I've had a drink and the other person hasn't. Strictly speaking I wasn't able to give consent so it wasn't consensual sex. However, I absolutely knew what I was doing because two glasses of wine isn't enough to cause me to lose judgement.

I struggle with this side of it (appreciate it's a bit of a derail). In reality it's never an issue but I suspect that if I later claimed I'd not consented the guy would be in hot water.

I actually think this is entirely possible too.

They may very well have been racists looking for a non-white victim or it could have just been generalised sadistic behaviour targeting clearly apparent features. I'm guessing they were waiting in the park for the first lone woman. It doesn't sound like they followed her.

anyolddinosaur · 12/09/2025 19:16

The attackers probably neither knew or cared what religion she was.

All rapes are horrible but these attackers probably got an extra kick out of the colour of her skin and knowing it would make people feel more unsafe. So yes it was a hate crime as well and should be prosecuted as such. Time to extend hate crimes to cover misogyny too.

TheJoyOfWriting · 12/09/2025 19:11

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/09/2025 18:37

Were any of them prosecuted as racist hate crimes? I wasn’t aware if so.

They should have been.

Asian girls were also abused, I am not sure but I think possibly Sikh girls the abusers saw as potential victims due to being non-Muslim? So religious rather than racial prejudice, although could also be that.
Though we know there has been a lot of sexual abuse of Muslim girls too, but I think it tended to be within families rather than in a gang. Also they were scared to report.

But definitely white girls seek to have primarily been targeted.

It’s awful. And does appear racially motivated.

Obeseandashamed · 12/09/2025 18:58

this is incredibly sad. Just as said as every other rape that takes place. The reason this one has been identified as a hate crime was because the woman was specifically told to go back to where she came from and she was being brutally raped
