A feminist activist has been sent to prison for two-and-a-half years because of messages on a T-shirt she wore in a selfie posted online.

The shirt featured the word “Allah” in Arabic, followed by the words “is lesbian” in English.

Ibtissam Lachgar was charged with blasphemy and with disseminating the image online.

She was found guilty of violating part of Morocco’s criminal code that outlaws offending the monarchy or Islam, her lawyer, Naïma El Guellaf, said.

A member of Ms Lachgar’s legal team said they plan to appeal the conviction.

If you have such a negative view of Islam, as I correctly anticipated you would, why do you speak so unpleasantly about brave protestors like Ibtissam Lachgar? (Let's give her the dignity of a name from now)

People challenging blasphemy laws is a step forward.

I agree that Islam has some v negative effects. Otoh the Biblical God has moments too : ordering Abraham to kill his son for one, even if he takes it back later, and condoning Lot's daughters having sex w their drunken father bc it preserves the tribal line. And I say that as a Christian!

The problem is that Saudi-funded Salafism & Wahhabism have made Islam more extreme in the last 3 centuries, not less. There are many moderate Muslims, they must be brave & we must support them to reclaim their faith from the crazies.

It’s not about whether it’s a good thing or not. I never found Charlie Hebdo particularly funny. However I don’t think they should be imprisoned or beheaded or murdered for drawing cartoons.

You can think this activists t-shirt is offensive and in bad taste whilst also thinking that the state has no right to persecute her for it.

But that's their country, that's their decision
Who are we to tell another country what's right or wrong
That's how wars start , getting involved in how other countries discipline their people.
Has that worked out well in any war the UK got involved in before.
No it's not right what is happening to her ..maybe she didn't go about ,what she wanted to achieve ,in the right way

Well she was playing stupid games for stupid prizes there.
Hardly a surprise she is where she is, not like it was a great secret that might happen.

At least the pensioners holding signs against genocide while getting arrested are trying to help other people and draw attention to something our media is trying to hide and govt trying to ignore.

For heavens' sake! She is an activist and native of Morocco, deliberately protesting. She knows the potential consequences as well as Nelson Mandela did when he protested apartheid. A very brave woman, esp as she's ill with cancer at the moment.

It's interesting you're defending the Palestine Action prptestors but not her. I am furious about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and v dubious about Netanyahu's government.

But I don't think it's genocide. It should definitely be protested, but Palestine Action are not the group to get involved with. There is credible evidence they have terrorist links.

Besides, free speech might not seem as urgent as the deaths of the starving, but the lack of free speech under the dictatorship of Hamas is partly what has led to the Gaza-Israel tragedy. It is completely essential to a free society, which in turn helps prevent injustice of all kinds.

I don't really understand why you think she has done a good thing .
If she lives there ,she would of known this would happen.
I believe free speech is important..but some things ,you just know they are going to cause huge offence ..or worse .
I know what I want to say ,but that would cause offence...some things you can't change
Didn't a man get be headed for something he wrote about religion in France

Thank goodness some people don't knuckle under like you. Or we practically be living in a caliphate here, unable to criticise Islam at all.

To be clear, I don't think Islam is necessarily bad. But this 'don't insult Muhammad or I'll kill you' certainly is.

That's funny
You not from the UK then ?

She's lucky she's only in prison
Again I can't say what I want ,as it will get taken the wrong way .
I feel sorry for her
But she can't change much from inside prison
Some things you can't change ,it goes to deep ,it's better to walk away

Do you think Salman Rushdie should have not written the Satanic Verses bc of the danger it put him in? I'm glad he was that brave.

Because she wants to change her country. That is the point of protest.

You clearly do not believe in free speech.

They're gender critical in the sense that they think that gendered behaviours are linked to biological sex, but masculine women and feminine men are still women and men reslectflively, bc biological sex is how you ultimately determine sex.

Whereas GC feminists normally see gendered behaviours as socially contracted, ar least to some extent.

If you believe in gendered behaviours then how are you being critical of the concept of gender?

But to certain religions it definitely will be offensive, and cause hurt and upset .
Again ,why ,do we need to hurt and upset each other

Because in order to avoid offending certain groups I am expected to give up my rights, my safety, my ability to practise my own beliefs….

TheJoyOfWriting · 08/09/2025 13:26

Alicealig · 08/09/2025 12:54

No I didn't miss that, hence my statement earlier in the thread to that very point....

Why do you keep talking about people visiting the country being rude, then, when that isn't the situation?

TheJoyOfWriting · 08/09/2025 13:25

Theoturkeyfliessouth · 08/09/2025 13:13

No she definitely should not be in prison
But some countries actually have rules that your expected to follow if you visit
Even in UK that would cause offence, not enough for a prison sentence at the moment, but who knows the way starmer is going
Sometimes you have to read the room , before doing stupid shit

You're the stupid one. She is an activist making a deliberate protest, knowing very well the consequences.

She should not be in prison
But equally she she not choose to wear inflammatory suggestions on t shirts ,in a country that will take offence

It's her country : she did it to challenge the blasphemy laws. She is a native Morpccan and feminist activist.

Why Can't you bother to read the post properly?

It's not about 'reading the room' :she wants there to be a right to offend & no blasphemy restriction on free speech. So she's sacrificing her freedom to protest.

Would you tell the Freedom Riders in the Deep South : read the room? Or Gandhi on his salt marches? Free speech is a crucial right.

If Starmer does lose his mind and do something similar w free speech laws, we should protest. If we were all ad submissive as you seem to be, goodness knows what would happen.

A very inspiring woman. How about a bit more 'I applaud her courage' and less 'put up, shut up, and don't offend Islam'. On the feminist board, no less!

What's that about her having cancer? If so, she's even braver, and I hope can get treatment.

Do YOU believe that free speech is important? Can't you see that has to include offensive stuff to different groups, or it's meaningless?

TheJoyOfWriting · 08/09/2025 13:18

TempestTost · 08/09/2025 10:46

I would say they were more critical of Islam in a serious way.

Allah is a lesbian is similar to saying something like "Jesus likes to wank in the toilet". Kind of offensive, but it's just not that meaningful, it's a poopy-bum-face level of comment.

The cartoons the pp was referring to were pointedly critical of real elements of Muslim thought and religion.

It's not necessarily, though I agree the sexuality-God link seems to be taking the mickey a bit.

Otoh attempts to depict God as a feminine figure are often more serious in intent, not just 'want in toilet' level. I'm reminded of the artist Harmonia Rosales' homage to The Creation of Adam with God as a black woman. (This isn't a new idea, the 1980s black feminist activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes said her mother had a similar poster on her wall, apparently partly as a gesture of rebellion against the v male-dominant leadership of her church.)

I must admit I had a quick look late last night after I started the thread and thought it must be the US participants.

Comments are shocking, but also which is becoming another problem, nobody bothers to read the full article.

It makes starting threads a bit depressing because if you pick out a few bits you can bet the whole thread will be hijacked by someone who gets fixated on one bit.

The article is about a women who whether she calls herself a feminist or not isn't the issue.

The defence said wearing the T-shirt fell under freedom of expression, a constitutional right in Morocco, and called the charges unconstitutional.

Long known for provocative activism, Ms Lachgar, 50, is a psychologist and co-founder of the Alternative Movement for Individuals Freedoms, known by its French acronym MALI.

Whether her form of protest is one any of us would do isn't the issue.

It is about the supposed right to free speech.

Which in Morocco seems not to exist if you want to talk about the Monarchy or Isalm

And as a Moroccan she must have been aware of the likely punishment.

Some might even think her brave.

And just as I think that in the UK we have a right to protest I support her right.

Admittedly I would have a different response if some european tourist turned up and did the same.

I would actually like to hear the official explanation as to why saying Allah is a Lesbian is offensive.

For saying Allah is a woman.

For saying Allah is same sex attracted.

I wonder if in fact in choosing this slogan she has lost the support of those in Morocco who want to support free speech.

Why is it offensive??
Well to you and me it's not ..

Why should a diety wanting to have sex be being awful? Loads of faiths have them having sex so why should the State deprive a citizen of her freedom just because it may offend people?

some gender critical people feel that way because they're religious and/or culturally conservative.

How can you be religious and/or culturally conservative and gender critical? They are pretty opposing positions!

They're gender critical in the sense that they think that gendered behaviours are linked to biological sex, but masculine women and feminine men are still women and men reslectflively, bc biological sex is how you ultimately determine sex.

It's hardly as bad as the infamous Muhammad cartoons various papers have done.

What is so bad about a cartoon?

One of the Danish ones had Muhammad w a bomb for a turban! Besides, Islam is against ANY depiction of Muhammad, even a polite one.

I support them, BTW.

I don't know how that's relevant, however, most certainly, yes. The overwhelming majority of German citizens supported the Nazi party in its time. Were you a German citizen at that point in time then the likelyhood that you would have also supported them happens to be very high.

Yes that is my point. But you think we should have appeased them for that reason?

TheJoyOfWriting · 08/09/2025 13:03

Alicealig · 08/09/2025 10:41

It's doesn't surprise me to see feminists being absolutely outraged and triggered for the fact they're starting to see opposing comments or posts that sometimes challenge their opinion. After all, we live in society where free speech should be valued. If youre opinion or views regarding any topic are sound, logical and well thought through, why would you be disappointed to see opposing views that you could easily counter and make a point of explaining how it's wrong?

If you value free speech, why are you apparently defending the blasphemy law?
