'The case of double amputee surgeon Andrew Neil Hopper, who infected his own legs with dry ice so they could be amputated because he had a fetish for amputations has opened a window into a truly bizarre world of dark web pornography and weird sexual fantasies for cut-off limbs and "stumps that look so sexy".
At a sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court today (Thursday September 4) it was heard how Hopper had throughout his life felt that he was in the wrong body and wanted to be a woman, but could not talk to anyone about it in the small rural village in Wales where he grew up.
The court was told how Hopper went to medical school where met his wife and future mother of his children and confided in her about his gender issues but never to his colleagues for fear he would be cast out out and left isolated. Neither did he confide to anyone about his body integrity disorder and the deep-rooted loathing he had for his legs and feet.'

THAT is the exact phrase I thought of.

And to which they’d probably say ‘Oh no, we didn’t mean that.’

That's an interesting paragraph if you consider he had a sexually motivated fetish and was a doctor. They are saying he took his fetish to work and that his personal behaviours were so much part of his identity they could not be separated from his professional life.

Take your whole self to work.

THAT is the exact phrase I thought of.

Just read the article in the Guardian - interesting that they even mentioned gender dysphoria was argued as a defence here, given their previous stance on matters! - if this doesn’t show the trans movement for what it is, then nothing will.

kinfauns · 01/08/2026 09:49

The Guardian article is really grim reading. Could we please bombard the Guardian letters page pointing out the similarities between this and “gender affirming care”? I.e lopping off healthy body parts with no medical benefits whatsoever. I doubt any would get printed but at least someone at the Guardian might read them.

Yes - and don't kink shame as NSPCC staff demanded when one of them was outed for sharing his rubber kink fetish in works place toilets. 🙄

Neversofaraway · 01/08/2026 09:31

He could have been put in a trial to see if chopping off his feet helped his mental state. Perhaps start with removing one foot then a year later the second foot?

Why not? It's no different to the puberty blocker trial.

Incredible that the tribunal can see this when its body dysmorphia but celebrate it when trans activists do exactly the same things

RedToothBrush · 01/08/2026 09:22

But when Hopper’s fitness to practise was assessed at a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing in May this year, which looked at whether Hopper should be allowed to continue as a doctor, the tribunal found “an extremely high level of seriousness and risk in this case, and that Dr Hopper has not demonstrated any meaningful insight or remediation into the impact of his behaviour on public protection”. Recommending that he be struck off the medical register, Robert Dudley, on behalf of the GMC, said: “The doctor’s professional life cannot be separated from his personal behaviours.”

That's an interesting paragraph if you consider he had a sexually motivated fetish and was a doctor. They are saying he took his fetish to work and that his personal behaviours were so much part of his identity they could not be separated from his professional life.

His defence barrister told the court that Hopper had suffered from lifelong gender dysphoria, as well as body dysmorphia, which manifested in a loathing for his feet. “They felt like an unwelcome extra.” He had tried to fill his life with family and work, but could not quiet the “constant noise” and “persisting, never-ending discomfort” caused by the idea of his feet. (Gustavson’s legal team had made similar arguments at Gustavson’s trial: that he had body integrity disorder and had simply been offering a service to others like him.) But the sexual content, both in the videos Hopper watched and in the communication he sent Gustavson while he was harming himself, are undeniable. Hopper was aroused by what he saw, and what he did

These are not an insignificant comments.

Good grief. That's a grim read. And of course he claims to have "gender dysphoria".

His poor wife and children discovering that this is who he really is. To think that he was a powerful surgeon in the NHS - no surprise there I'm afraid.

Shocking article about this case and about his patients today:

We need distinctions between mental health conditions and fetishes!

He didn't look down and see a leg that didn't look like his, he looked down and got an erection at the thought of having his feet cut off, and found it such a turn on that he took steps to make it a reality.

Then swindled his insurance company.

Exactly.

Body dysmorphia is a recognised mental health condition. And I have heard of that before, where people feel a part of their body doesn't belong and experience the urge to cut of their own limbs, etc. This guy sounds like he was mentally unwell to me. It must be horrible if you look down and your leg doesn't feel like yours.

This is a reply. The original query was posted by someone who believes themself to be a transman/transmasc and also to have undiagnosed Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple alters/be a ‘system’):

I just think the whole thing is problematic in a myriad of ways. The unnecessary reliance on mobility aids, the cost to the state in such benefits and equipment… I think it needs an exposé!

TheUnusuallyQuerulentMxLauraBrown · 09/09/2025 14:51

I find myself concerned re: potential crossover (deliberate or accidental ) with the young women/transmen who identify as a disabled/self ‘prescribe’ mobility aids (compounded by exploitation via Only fans etc).

Funnily enough I stumbled across a ‘we need to restrict all the questions re: purchasing mobility aids’ post on r/disability earlier…

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2025 14:47

'How may of you find it arousing?'
'All of us'
'All of us, but don't talk about it because it looks bad'
'All of us and I'm not ashamed'

(obviously I'm paraphrasing)

I must admit I found myself having a quick glance at that Reddit section and it really disgusted me

Edited

Yeah, the constant ‘we don’t want the public to think BIID is a sex thing’ immediately followed by ‘obviously it CAN be a sex thing, we just want to keep that part a secret’ is really troubling.

Presumably this is how people with such disordered thinking find each other - online?

I can't help looking back to the days when social disapproval helped put in place boundaries - especially for the young. Men had to go into a sex shop to purchase porn or get it sent through the post (and sometimes confiscated) and for all the extreme stuff, they had to go into a back room.

The risk of being seen by neighbours - gossip etc must have kept countless young men away from the seedy adults pushing their fetishes. Now of course, they get state funding to access the young. 😞

But another side of me thinks it’s easier to police online maybe

Agreed. I think access online via websites, dark web, porn, and communities found on the likes of Reddit, the pit that is 4chan etc. have fuelled such disgusting fetishes conveniently and easily.

Bring back shame! Shame provides a social barrier and purpose in reducing dangerous and harmful fetishes like these.

There's a subreddit ... Confused
