Gender incongruence in surgeon who amputated legs

I don’t know. I agree it’s likely but it takes a lot of digging to find figures separated by the sex-based prison estate, though tbf they are available if you do dig. It must be said there are also a few women who commit sexual crimes as an enterprise with other women.

The figures being from 2017, a few of that 125 will have been male as well. Though not, for example, Sarah Jane Baker, who I think of in this context as they are another self castrator, who remained in male prisons throughout.

I suspect that the number of women who are in prison for committing a sexual crime who acted alone is a lot less than 125. Most were accomplices of men.

The Guardian article is terrifying (and very well written imo). They make it carefully clear that part of the fetish/pornography was arousal due to pain, other people’s or their own. No wonder past patients who had pain are kicking off.

Part of the problem is a kind of innocence. You’d need I think a board of quite experienced psychiatrists and surgeons to investigate the clinical cases together.

I do wonder if the conversion legislation could somehow be used to prosecute the people on these message boards who aim to normalise this utterly extreme shit.

There's that male surgeon (tw Marcie...?) who castrated Jennings. Iirc he talked about porn when conducting a physical examination of the poor child. In a jokey way, but still!😨He's made a good, financially and status, career of it.

The doctors only deal with the problem in front of them at the time. They saw damaged feet that needed sorting out and once sorted moved on to the next patient. At that time, no criminal offence had been committed.

Exactly @MrsOvertonsWindow . Hopper's status as a surgeon and specialist in that field surely swayed them? Besides , doesn't sepsis normally occur as a result of some other, usually long-standing, problem? Often some very serious illness. It's not like strep throat or a dodgy knee ffs. He was a fairly young otherwise healthy man.

There's big issues with consultants being untouchable gods - not helped by hospitals desperately trying to keep waiting lists down at all costs.

Put a consultant on sick/suspension and all the hospital stats go to shit and you get hell from all his (unfortunately this is a male problem) well connected mates.

A nurse or junior doctor doesn't want to be a whistle blower because they know how badly the NHS treats them.

As @Abhannmor points out, there must have been countless NHS staff who saw inappropriate behaviour yet ignored? denied? failed to exercise professional curiosity about it.

There's a massive problem with the culture of the NHS. It's played out in maternity services. It's played out in repeated child abuse reviews where medics are seen to have dismissed repeated non accidental injuries. It's played out in countless scandals where predatory or incompetent / dangerous medics have caused harm with whistleblowers being ignored.

Yet we are only meant to praise the "angels" and ignore the repeated dangers and scandals which allows men like Hopper to thrive and abuse the system (and it's feared, patients).

(I know this will feel unfair to the countless hard working ethical staff but until this culture of keeping quiet is effectively addressed, the Hopper's of the medical profession will continue to thrive)

Absolutely. Decades ago a friend's then injured his genitals and she had to take him to hospital. He said it was the result of an accident with his zipper. But the consultant took her to one side and said the injury had to have been self inflicted - it was inconsistent with his story.

The hospital checked with his GP and he did have previous mental health issues. Now that was a long time ago and a far less serious episode but still they were onto it straight away. No way they didn't have suspicions about this surgeon.

Agree. If you genuinely had dysphoria how on earth would you find yourself working in an area where most of your job involved working with the body part on others that you are dysphoric about yourself?! He presumably either always had this weird fetish and deliberately specialised in this area because of it, or somehow developed it because of the area he worked in.

I don't know much about how and why fetishes develop but there should be more research on it, or more education for the public if the knowledge is already there, as there are so many of these creepy fuckers out there inserting themselves into what for most people are everyday situations because for them they are sexual.

There needs to be an investigation into the surgeons who removed his legs. Because they can’t have not known there was something dodgy about the injuries that wasn’t in keeping with sepsis. They must have known it was self inflicted and there must have been signs it was dry ice or such an injury. But no one said anything.

I don't believe he actually has dysphoria or deep distress about either issue. I think it's sexually motivated rather than motivated by distress.

I talk about this a lot in the trans threads. Ive worked with multiple people who have tried to cut their limbs off, some have been successful, or made themselves deaf or who want to be blind etc etc

It is absolutely linked in my view to the same issues with trans, except that ideology has taken over one and continued to rightly view the other as a MH condition needing treatment and protection to prevent someone chopping off their arm

Some of it might be fetishisation but most of it is bog standard MH disorders of dysmporphia.

Having been intimately involved in a case where an NHS surgeon was not fit to practice and carried on for ten years before professional standards kicked in, I very much doubt that the NHS trust in question has the data available to show that his surgical outcomes and behaviour was poor. And outcomes might not be cross referenced against e.g. time of surgery.

Yes I've just read this piece and it is truly horrific. That poor guy who had himself castrated , he was mentally unwell at the time. It was also shocking to read this graphic expose of the fetish in the Guardian of all places.

One couldn't help but think , if this was a young boy or girl who wanted to change sex they would be on the other side of the argument. The psycho surgeon left it late to claim he has gender dysphoria though? Last ditch attended to garner sympathy I suppose.

I wondered what level of investigation they’d carried out to assure patients he hadn’t been a risk and turns out it’s about the level of investigation I’d expected 😡
It’s disturbing that he’s due for release soon. I hope there’s very good tracking on him after release.
