Duolingo is trying to queer us again.

Not content with describing JK Rowling as 'gemein' mean, Duoling's German course is busy normalising BDSM/kink to users of all ages. Here - image attached - we learn that single Dad Eddy has a leather suit and a whip in the cupboard. Duolingo encourages users to sign up via its family plan. But I wouldn't really fancy explaining this one to younger members of my own family.

Duolingo is trying to queer us again.

Afraid not.

Perhaps if you actually listened to trans and non-binary people, to the very many gay and lesbian people who either also identify as queer or are comfortable sitting within the queer umbrella, you may get things wrong a bit less.

Or you know, if you actually said what you think these things are, instead of playing "no, not that, no not that, ugh no not that", maybe people wouldn't have to guess what you mean and end up getting it wrong?

You are a lesbian person I believe? Would you not be the ideal person to explain properly? Because this whole "you have to guess and I'll tell you that you are wrong and insinuate you should know better but I'll never actually give a straight (no pun intended) answer" is really not doing anything to address the issues you seem to have with people getting things wrong.

myplace · 25/08/2025 18:56

In some circles, queer=everyone else but me and thee. And I’m not that sure about thee.

So queer is just something people identify as?

Here you are literally admitting that it means spicy straight.

The idea of gay and straight non binary people is fucking hilarious.

So you believe you're neither male nor female but you also know you are attracted to people of the same/the opposite sex to yourself.

Righty-oh.

Oh good, not just me then.

Given how many genders there are supposed to be, even the idea of being attracted to a specific gender doesn’t really work. If you identified as an obscure gender or multiple genders, you might be a bit stuck.

This is not an innocent stumbling this is a language app listed company including a child user in an adults sex life.

If a person was to open that type of conversation with a child via the internet it would be recognised as grooming behaviour and this for profit company is allowing that interaction to take place on its platform.

Not based on the previous poster's account, where it is exactly depicted as an innocent stumbling on items that are explained away as the parent being a lion tamer.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 25/08/2025 18:20

FlirtsWithRhinos · 25/08/2025 18:15

Ok, I'll try to follow your logic but I will need to unpack it a bit so please bear with me.

What do you mean by a non-binary heterosexual person? Do you mean they are only attracted to other non-binary people?

What is the definition of "straight" and how does that differ from "heterosexual"? The two were always synonymous when I was growing up.

Indeed, what in your understanding is the difference between "straight" and "queer", since you think they are mutally exclusive terms?

If a straight monogamous person who enjoys BDSM sees themself as queer, are they wrong?

(I will re-iterate my inital point that you do seem to be using a different definition for queer than I thought was common usage these days.)

I’m using straight to specifically refer to non-queer people, not just heterosexual. Someone might be non-binary and heterosexual and identify as queer for example.

Someone yes BDSM is not something that only queer people do.

As the thread has gone on though the claim that any unacceptable sexualising of children is ‘queering’ - even if it’s done by AI, or regardless of motive - is wrong and it is used with a very specific and hateful intent.

Here you are literally admitting that it means spicy straight.

The post you quote literally gives an example of someone who might be heterosexual and queer.

I use 'straight' to refer to someone who is not queer.

Did someone dare you to wedge as many logical (and actual) fallacies into one sentence?

It now turns out that the context of this is some sort of (I'd say) ill judged innuendo based joke about a parent who claims to be a lion tamer, and a child taking that explanation at face value.

Of course that sort of comedic trope - child stumbling innocently across some aspect of their parents sex life to the mortification of the parent - is a pretty age old and hackneyed feature of e.g. movies aimed at both adults and children. You can like it or not. I don't.

But unless you think a large number of family movies over the last number of decades are all about 'queering', the OP's claim remains absolute nonsense, and a desperate effort to get the concept of queerness mashed together with nefarious intentions towards child sexualisation.

Edited to add - in case wondering about those fallacies. Hundreds/thousands of lesbians marched in London Pride. I guarantee you not one of them was asked for their openness to trans women as sexual partners in order to do so. There is also no new focus on fetishism in Pride - kink/fetish has been a very small part of pride for a long time and this year was no different.

No it doesn't.

Yes it does. The L, G and B cover literally anyone who is same sex attracted. So the Q can only mean heterosexual.

TempestTost · 25/08/2025 17:54

I tend to agree that as content for adults, it is no differernt than hundreds of perfectly fine films, televisions and books, using that exact same joke set up.

Where Duolingo have gone wrong I think is because a lot of their users are underage, and schools etc will recommend it for kids. And it's a bit weird as a joke in a language learning program. For the same reason it would have been a weird joke to see in your french textbook at age 15.

I expect it is because the AI doesn't understand that kind of social nuance.

Sure, but the media I'm referring to is not adult specific. It is often stuff in the 'family friendly' genre that needs to be accessible for kids while still entertaining adults.

Your post is a good demonstration on why OP is nonsense though.

AI constructing a weird means of language learning using the same trope as many family movies is not queering anything. OP is just determined to wedge queerness and child sexualisation together and to hell with facts.

No it doesn't.

so that’s another phrase you do t know the meaning of. It’s ok. Honestly. We can’t all know everything. I mean, you accused me, a NB of not knowing what non binary meant instead of politely asking.

SionnachRuadh · 25/08/2025 18:01

Hi Planet, you've said the same thing on previous occasions. In fact, when challenged, you've gone out of your way to deny that there is indecent exposure at Pride and those of us who have seen it shouldn't believe our lying eyes.

Either you haven't been to Pride in a long time or you're making shit up. Which is it?

EmpressaurusKitty · 25/08/2025 17:54

I think it means challenging/breaking boundaries around sex (in the sense of sexual fantasies or activity) now, whether or not that was its original intention. That’s why Pride now seems to be about transgenderism and sex fetishes, and excludes lesbians who aren’t prepared to become bisexual.

I use 'straight' to refer to someone who is not queer.

And yet you can not define queer or to queer or straight in a way which facilitates effective communication

AirborneElephant · 25/08/2025 14:12

I still fondly remember my primary school Latin book which included the scene “O mea Cara! Da mihi osculum!”. That was about as explicit as it got though.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2025 01:51

soupyspoon · 24/08/2025 16:17

Yes this, Im surprised someone has to ask this. Its not about gay or straight anymore, its about being your true self. Whatever that is.

Thank you. @PlanetJanette IMO your understanding is out of date. Please be specific in why the term “queering” doesn’t apply to BDSM.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/08/2025 01:46

PlanetJanette · 24/08/2025 18:11

It’s not though. The concept of queering is inherently related to challenging norms around sexuality and gender.

Claiming that any example of inappropriate sexualisation of children is ‘queering’ is both wrong and dangerous.

It has a broader meaning, of smashing boundaries around sexuality, but maybe you weren’t aware of that, Janette. It’s not an accident that many “queer theorists” are fans of BDSM.
