Lisa Nandy wears ‘Protect the Dolls’ T-shirt at Pride event

It's not clear what she thinks she is trying to communicate - surely her intended audience think she is a hypocrite, given that she hasn't said anything to contradict the government position that the SC decision provided 'much needed clarity'?

Yes Kumquat,it’s a reference I’d only heard previously on RuPaul’s Drag Race, which makes more sense in that context in terms of being in make up and costume, a performance.

I can’t stand the way these stupid Americanisms dominate this discourse - it just shows how easily people will parrot these lines (‘bathroom bill’ ‘government name’ etc) without any critical thought whatsoever.

It's a widely reviled slogan in the trans community because it's paternalistic, and hearkens back to a previous generation of campy gay man drag culture - all the associations modern day TRAs would like to avoid invoking. (although in fairness who wouldn't want to protect the Mr. Humphries of the world it's just that: what does it have to due with TRs?) Likewise, It's no surprise that tone deaf, out-of-the-loop 'CIS' allies would be attracted to such an atrocious campaign slogan.

I suspect fromorbit that Nandy ignores the red flags. She seems to have strong incentive to do so, and partly in sunk cost at this time.

Whats odd to me is that 'dolls' puts trans identifying men firmly in gay men culture, nothing to do with women.

'Protect the dolls' to mean that these gay men should be treated as if they are women make no sense.

Did Nandy ever row back on 'prison of their choosing'?

She really will hand her seat on to Reform at the next election.

Just thinking ahead... election night in four years' time will be a confusing one for us Labour voters!

Here is the Telegraph article. To be fair Nandy almost certainly doesn't know about the dolls/bricks division. Those who know about that stuff either eventually start to Peak because they discover about the deeper sexist crazy inside gender ideology and reality starts to bite or are so deep in that they ignore all the red flags.

Nandy is doing herself no favours. She has various enemies at the top of the party who will seize on this.

That’s in part why that Reddit thread, who are likely to fall more into the latter category as most of these men do, aren’t universally delighted with her gesture.

I gather from Reddit and also an article in the Telegraph (which I can’t now find), the protect the dolls relates to a specific type of TW - basically those who pass. Those who don’t are sometimes referred to as bricks (not my terminology). Seems like LN is rather selective in her support.

I didn't need any more reasons for not voting for her, but LN continues to provide them. Appalling woman, Keeping Wigan out of the hands of Reform would be a tough ask by any measure, but she's killed it dead.

She's really as thick as mince, isn't she. Not as thick as Whittome, but that's setting the bar so low a worm couldn't limbo under it.

They really are so self obsessed that they have no idea how much Nandy beclowns herself for their cause. Sad times.

Hey Lisa! Get that slogan on the door of every male toilet and changing room. Trans women are protected in this space.

Personally I have always thought dolls quite scary and weird. Not sure why anyone would want to be described as one.

If they want to dehumanize themselves as "dolls" then let them, I say. Better than calling themselves women.

I feel really let down. I've always respected her. She's been a reliable panellist on Question Time and has always impressed me - she seems decent and level- headed. It's such a shame that her decency and common sense seems to have gone missing here.

I know we sometimes take the piss out of David Lammy, but Lammy can be thoughtful and intelligent when he puts his mind to it. You just have to shake him out of his laziness.

But Nandy's presence in the cabinet boggles my mind. She's such a silly woman.

Nandy can't spell dolls; she makes mince seem clever. She typifies the low intellectual and moral calibre so many ' unfit for duty' politicos.

I just look at the last two elections and the number of UKIP/Con/Reform voters. Its likely the Tory vote will completely collapse.

Add in an incumbent government penalty to Labour and it looks tight.

They will push the narrative of the out of touch MP who spends too much time in Westminister and not in Wigan. And it will stick with stuff like this.
