Men are pushing women over in the street - as a trend

Experts fear that new types of misogyny and harassment – including spitting and pushing women over – are taking hold in the UK as they move offline

This type of targeted shoulder barging has a name: butsukari otoko. The term, which originated on the streets of Japan in 2018, describes a type of violence against women that is done in a crowded public space, most commonly train stations.

It could at first appear accidental, but it is actually intentional; it is gendered (men doing it to women), and done for misogynistic reasons.

Researchers fear it is gaining traction in the UK, spreading from online videos to real-life encounters. “It’s come out of a subculture that existed years ago in Japan,” says Megan Hughes, a researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Centre for Emerging Technology and Security, which tracks online extremism. “It is something that’s been around for a long time, and people are now recognising it and are speaking out, but it’s a really difficult thing to track.

“They are sometimes subtle collisions, which are designed to appear accidental. They’re making victims second-guess intent or motive, and that then makes it really difficult for people wanting to report a crime. So it’s really hard for us to monitor.”

Street harassment isn’t new, but many believe it’s getting worse. A poll by Zencity, which surveyed 1600 women, found that 69 per cent said they had first or secondhand experience of women being ill-treated within the last 12 months; 75 per cent of women surveyed said violence and harassment was a serious problem and asked whether it had got worse in the last five years – 42 per cent agreed, and 30 per cent thought it was the same.

Incidentally, "reaching the rank of captain" simply means he was still alive and in the army at the end of three years after his promotion to lieutenant, and promotion to lieutenant would have been automatic after he'd spent two years as a second lieutenant, the lowest available rank after being an officer cadet at Sandhurst. It's being promoted to major that means they think you are worth trying to hang onto. If as Wiki says he served in "Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq", he was probably eased out because he wasn't suitable for a majority.

He had a medal. This doesn't mean he did anything spectacular; some are what are called "warm body gongs" by the people who have them. And the one he is said to have had was the Diamond Jubilee Medal, which essentially would mean he was in the forces in 2012.

However, there seems not to have been enough evidence that the pusher was Nicholas Brandram for the police to get him charged with the crime, so we may never know for sure whether he did it or not.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/09/2026 16:34

Huh. He pushed her and she ended up in the road. He swerved in order to push her. I doubt that he swerved by accident, or pushed her by accident.

oldtiredcyclist · 18/09/2026 09:43

This makes interesting reading. I wonder if it is true that one of his two ex wives notified the police? There are posters on the car forum I was banned from, saying that the jogger didn't deliberately push the woman into the road. I do sometimes wonder about the reasoning of some people.

We need to recignise misogynistic violence like the Putney Pusher's as a hate crime.

Yes, that is very obviously what it was. But of course whenever they make hate crime legislation it completely sidesteps protecting women because abuse of women is so overwhelmingly common and normalised that the fashionable thing they are trying to protect would be swamped by the requirement to supply the same protection to women and girls.
I am struggling to explain this well, but I think to address only the worst instances would open the can of worms about whether that means lesser instances should not be policed for other hatecrime-protected groups too.

Honestly, I'm starting to get really annoyed at the sentencing in this country. Violent crime, rape, nothing. Shoplifting, the police don't even come in the first place. But dodgy tweets? Prison for you.

I'm starting to feel like I must be a rabid right-winger.

The rabid right wingers laid into a woman at the Reform conference... I don't think you are one of them!

At the risk of derailing I do also agree with Lucy Connolly punishment for tweet inciting violence- calling for migrant hotels to be burned down with people inside is not so different to the rhetoric emboldening men to hurt women in plain sight.

We don't need to pit violent rhetoric against violent actions. They both need cracking down on.

OTOH if that's not the kind of tweet you're referring too and it's just policing opinions you're objecting to- I agree!

He had form for collisions. He was on a Harley Davidson and ran into a woman cyclist and rode off without stopping. Claimed he never felt the impact. They walk, run, and ride powerful motorbikes among us these women hating madmen.

Jesus, I didnt know that. Grim.

INeedAPensieve · 17/09/2026 07:50

The Putney pusher was deliberate he veered towards her to push her she would have died if not for that bus driver's quick actions. And he just jogged on and ignored her and the crowd of people helping her when he came back the same way. The motorbike incident and his "royal" connections plus army/banking etc makes sense why he wasn't charged at the time. One less misogynistic man in this world; I'm sorry for his family and children but I can't say I feel sad he's killed himself. It would have been better if he'd faced up to his actions.

I was just thinking about this guy the other day. Blimey

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/09/2026 18:10

My grief at his death is certainly containable.

RoamingToaster · 16/09/2026 18:09

Just came on mumsnet after seeing the news. Clearly a very disturbed man. At least he won’t be endangering any more women.

mrshoho · 16/09/2026 17:52

Didn't see that coming I must admit.

LikeStrawberriesAndCream · 16/09/2026 17:52

Wow.
It was just such a sinister attack on that woman, wasn't it. It wasn't just that she was in his way, he actually veered across to her, to push her. That's a real dark hatred of women.

Reading this thread reminded me of this I saw the other day

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cglj43pn525o

Obviously I wasn't in the court or privy to the deliberations of the jury but I was aghast when I read the article. It reminded me of the other recent case of a 16 yo boy who stabbed and killed a 9 yo girl but wasn't even found guilty of manslaughter.

That is an absolute disgrace.

An ex army bloke with royal connections was recently interviewed or arrested , haven’t seen any follow up, but at least case still open?

I don't think pushing a woman off a bus, into a road, or off a sea wall is just because 'men don't treat us like delicate princesses'. It's violent, thuggish, misogynistic behaviour and should be punished harshly.

There's a long space between treating women like delicate flowers and shoving them into oncoming traffic. Most men who exist in the middle seem quite capable of treating women as they themselves would wish to be treated. The ones at the violent end of that line should be in prison.

Exactly. I'm 60 now and have never been treated like a delicate princess in my entire life. But in the last ten years or so casual male aggression in public places has definitely increased. When I'm out and about I'm almost always alone, so that makes me even more of a target. There is no way that man on the IoW thought it was funny, except to men who hate women, that is.

mumumental · 20/07/2026 23:43

That has never happened to me, but I was shoved in to a phone box as an older teen (17?) and justled around roughly by half a dozen young men. It was in a busy bus station too. Nobody did anything about it.

moto748e · 20/07/2026 23:34

There is some awful rhetoric out there on SM, and reports like that from the poster upthread about a recent deterioration of her workplace regarding working with male colleagues, far from the first, alongside this recent spate of incidents, does strongly suggest, most worryingly, that things are actually getting worse.
