The most openly misogynistic men (and actually spiteful about women) I have ever met have been gay. One of them once told me "we don't want to get into your gash, so why should we care about you on any other level". I suppose he had a point. Why do so many women think gay men relate to us. Gay men are just men (with all that entails) who don't even want us sexually.

there are just too many common themes going on between cinematic sci fi, trans humanism, trans and also to porn and then also seemingly bondage as demonstrated by the Wachowski brothers, now both trans, who did the matrix and then fetishistic child abuse as uncovered by Genevieve Gluck via the eunuch archives and WPATH files.

Warrior, I watched this (Alien Earth) last night too, and had similar thoughts.

The children's brains being put into "synth" adult bodies certainly reminded me of the situation with puberty blockers, and again raised the question - who benefits from there being people who are legally adults but have pre-pubertal bodies/minds?

Or as in Alien Earth, who benefits from children's minds in adults bodies? I wondered if they were going for a comedy aspect but that wouldn't fit with the overall framing.

I smelt a rat as soon as he started being gender non conforming, hoped it was just that, and it distracted me from the story. The Chinese girl comment was about all I remembered from the whole series.

As an aside I heard the director or producer of the new Alien Earth series on Disney yesterday, talking about it on 6 music.. It’s a prequel to Alien. (Spoiler alert.)

he played a song by the bloke who was Anthony and the Johnsons but is now identifying as a woman and has another name I can’t remember. It was all about “you’re my sister.” 🙄

started watching it last night (as alien is obviously a work of art) - the cinematic framing is good but there’s too much going on. Bit on the ship at first was good. However the story is VERY trans human esque and thereafter it was all about this.

they (a megalomaniac very young man, a nod to Elon musk I feel) put poorly/ dying children’s minds into manufactured super strong “synths” and made a comment about “adults brains being too inflexible to make the transition.” So they’re plopping a child into an adult body. (“At least” the bodies were all faithful to the child in that the adult body looked roughly what the child looked like, skin, hair, eyes wise, and no cross sex mixing ffs)

these synths are the heroes so far as a ship with aliens on crashes to Earth and they’re the ones (with kids brains) who are strong enough to cope. Thats where I got to.

ugh I’m going to have to wade through the rest of it when I’m not about to go to sleep and it’s not going to piss me off!

Come to think of it, I'm not sure a female version of QAF would be possible. The two scenes are just too different, and you would have to tell a completely different kind of story about the relationships involved.

Sugar Rush was fun, but that's very different again (and 20 years ago). It's almost as if the sexes are not the same.

I am now trying to imagine what a female version of QAF would look like, as a theoretical screenplay pitch. It might be called Sensible Shoes.

The more RTD speaks on this, the more I think he's deflecting. Look over there at the scary orange man, not at me.

What was edgy and groundbreaking for the time now seems seedy and sleazy. I think in multiple scripts his writing has revealed him to be a bit of a sleazebag, perving over very young, often blond things. He's made a career out of putting his sexual fantasies and everyday-man self-insert protagonists on screen. QaF especially is of an era before porn was mainstream and productions didn't commonly have intimacy coordinators, so God knows how it's aged.

I don't know if I'd like to rewatch his stuff, with the knowledge of male depravity that we have nowadays. No wonder he blamed mothers in It's a Sin. He probably hates women who can see what's happening in the world and instill proper boundaries to protect their children.

I'd never honestly heard of Lip Service, it seems to have had 12 episodes (BBC3 / Scotland production). The promo pics are sexy women in clinches and fashionable lifestyles, synopses are a bit soap-y but it doesn't seem to have had much reach / impact

That's how I remember it; a bit soapy, it but was OK. I don't think it made much of a splash.

Another gripe about RTD is the amount of indulgence he was given in re Dr Who. I'm a bit younger than RTD with similar fond memories of 1970s / 80s Who, like Gatiss et al. I give RTD full credit for intelligently reviving it in 2005 by encoding that self-referential nostalgia in stories fit for the C21st. His 2005 onwards stint was very good. But he didn't create or own it and neither did the boys' club of 'showrunners' that came after who had a stranglehold on it. Bringing RTD back with added rainbow woo politics has been the last nail.

Sally Wainwright seems to have written a large chunk of popular UK TV drama centred on women (alongside Kay Mellor and Heidi Thomas) and she strives to have lesbian characters along with all the other kinds of women in there - the only one centred on lesbians being history drama Gentleman Jack - I'm cynically suspicious it was cancelled by Netflix before the end of the story for having too much coal mining and canals and not enough sexy bodices and shagging.

I missed the reference to Lincoln as a 'Chinese girl' in the script that the article refers to. I always thought his character was an example of a gender non-conforming boy. Dressing as he pleased, but still a boy called Lincoln. I also thought the transhumanism story, which included a mention of the ships anchored offshore previously doing cheap quick 'gender transitions', as being a pop at gender ideology. RTD's been a bonkers misogynist longer than I thought then. 🙄

Gareth's book is great. I read it in one sitting.

I was just thinking, PD James was putting openly lesbian characters in her detective novels in the 1970s, and even in the 1960s she'd write about female "friends" who had been living together for years and were obviously coded lesbian.

60 years later, TV dramatists don't seem to have heard of this strange and obscure demographic. We're about as likely to get a drama about Mongolian throat singers as lesbian relationships.

Gareth's book is one of the most readable, and certainly the funniest, of the books written about the madness. I highly recommend.

Sorry I strongly disagree with this. You're saying people who cannot vote (actually they can now) and drive a car and buy a drink can't consent to sex, but want rules interfering with the private lives of people over 18 and under 25?! But they can do all of the things you list. So then would you be campaigning to push back voting and driving and drinking (not at the same time) to 25 as well?

I would not live in a country with extreme state interference like this. We have to trust that people will make their own decisions once they reach a certain age, even if those are not the decisions we would like them to make or which we would make for them.

It's almost like, all evidence to the contrary, the tras want the tiny handed orange one to be homophobic. Almost like if they didn't have gay rights to parasitise they know they'd have even less support.
