@quantumbutterflyyou are absolutely right that university students must be able to cope with their beliefs being challenged. In the most memorable lecture I had at Glasgow, the lecturer (Dr Chris Berry) said university was about the pursuit of truth and as a first year, I found that very inspiring. It’s mind blowing to me now that the university has been held hostage to people who deny the truth.

Bit of a worry when students at a top university feel unsafe having their ideas challenged.

I joined the GUU in 1990 and it was still noticeably more conservative than the QM, which was the hotspot for student protests. That’s what I find so worrying. It just shows how entrenched this bullshit is in Scotland.

Yes, it did mix first. I actually voted against mixing because I feared that the men would simply take over. Left for my year abroad and when I returned the vote to mix had gone through and the president of QMU was a man.

I remember the days when GUU didn't allow women into the Beer Bar...and ran the infamous 'Freds' for entertainment.

I am also an alumnus. As far as I know the QMU was originally the "women's union" but did become mixed first. Like you @WearyAuldWumman I'm rather surprised as I thought the GUU was more conservative - certainly was in my day. However clearly still a bunch of over entitled misogynists. Plus ca change etc

GU is my alma mater. We had two separate unions until 1980. Typically, QMU - the women's union - mixed first and was then more or less taken over by men so far as the governing board was concerned. When I got back from my year abroad in '81 GUU had mixed.

I'm surprised that this has happened at GUU - it was always much more conservative. I guess that times have changed. [Actually, you might be right. The misogyny has stayed the same.]
