Hamas and 'genocidal sexual violence'

A very hard read, inevitably.

I skipped parts.

The broader point raised is about sexual violence in conflict, and how it can be prosecuted.

People visit the memorial site for the victims of the 7 October 2023 attack on the Nova music festival, near Kibbutz Re'im, southern Israel (6 October 2024)

Hamas used sexual violence as part of 'genocidal strategy', Israeli experts say

The Dinah Project, an all-women group, lays out "a legal blueprint for prosecuting these crimes", which Hamas has denied committing.

If people actually studied Hamas before all of this and most certainly their origin and what they ultimately stand for - why would anyone be so shocked at this? They are evil. Im not saying Israel is without fault, but Hamas and their warped ideological views are barbaric and evil. Simple as that. Anyone who thinks they stand for the Palestinian people really are either completely ignorant of this so called organisation or even worse, agree with them.

I cant read what they did, no different to I cant read the released reports of the Southport killings. Its awful, but with Southport killings I am sure we are all in agreement that the ugly evil that murdered those girls should burn for eternity. Hamas have done so much, not just in that attack, but over a long period but people still for some reason support them! I hate them no different to hating IDF soldiers committing atrocities or anyone else in the world that demonstrates evil.

A powerful article from Andrew Fox.

I have seen things no one should ever have to see. As the rapporteur for a visit of retired senior military officers to Israel, I was given access to the 7 October massacre evidence at an IDF base in Glilot. The evidence went beyond the infamous 49-minute video. I have seen photographs so graphic and horrifying that they made me physically recoil. Even now, simply recalling those images makes my throat tighten and the hairs on my arms stand on end.

When I visited the evidence room in Glilot, it was in a controlled setting. Retired military senior leaders were shown the raw footage and photos behind closed doors. There was zero doubt among those who saw it that these horrors occurred. I saw hardened former soldiers leaving the room sickened and silenced, their faces etched with shock.

The attacks on 7 October were coordinated to maximise terror and humiliation on Israeli civilians, employing rape and other forms of sexual torture as tactical weapons of war. This conclusion carries significant weight; it indicates these acts were not the reckless actions of a few individuals but part of a planned strategy to dehumanise and terrify a population. From ISIS’s genocide of Yazidis to Boko Haram’s kidnappings, we have seen sexual violence recognised as a weapon of warfare in other conflict zones. Now we understand that Hamas belongs in that same hall of shame.

This is a personal issue for me, as it should be for anyone with a conscience. I am not Israeli, but as a human being, as a man, as a former soldier and writer about war who stood on that charred ground in the Gaza Periphery and later held back tears talking with survivors and hostage families, I feel an obligation to amplify their truth. We must ensure that the rape and sexual torture of 7 October are recognised globally for what they were: crimes against humanity. The dehumanisation that Hamas practised, in which Jewish civilians were not only to be killed, but degraded most intimately, needs to be utterly condemned by every decent person, no matter their politics on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Did you take this from the CITME thread? Sexual violence in war has been happening since the dawn of time. Why all of a sudden are we taking notice just because Hamas committed the atrocious act?

Are you by chance suggesting that Hamas not be hung out and dried for this? That Hamas should get a bye because rape and sexual violence have always happened in war? Because if you are, you are part of the problem - almost a Dr. Pangloss, in fact.

User37482 · 09/07/2025 09:29

I think that interventions like this are basically aimed at legitimising Hamas. Theres a “we don’t need to talk about this” vibe to it because it’s disruptive to the freedom fighter narrative. People generally don’t like to know their heroes are rapey perverts.

I don’t understand how anyone can be pro Palestinian and pro Hamas tbh. If someone refused to let me vote, taxed me to build tunnels instead of clinics, terrorised journalists, stole my aid and then sold it back to me and then started shooting people in the legs for complaining about them I’d think they were a bunch of fucking pricks tbh. Who would want to live with that?

womanbornn · 09/07/2025 08:39

people love to make out that Hamas is a legitimate government and not the terrorist group it actually is. The denial and justification of the wide-scale rape they carried out (on dead as well as living bodies) is vile.

I agree with you. I don’t support the vile actions of the IDF but Hamas are a brutal terrorist group that dont care how many Palestinians die.

Sexual violence in war is sadly not new and we should call investigate it and discuss it and make sure the world knows about it every time it happens.

User37482 · 09/07/2025 08:43

I really wish rape apologists would just do it elsewhere other than the feminist boards. Theres plenty of “well you know who else got raped!?” On the CITME boards already where you can minimise rape of people you don’t approve of to your hearts content.

I don’t care who it is, every person who is raped is a victim of a horrible crime.

Blurrywateryeye is unwise to bring in 'whataboutery', as there are wars and armed conflicts and forced displacements going on around the world that don't get much media attention, which could be used for a different kind of 'whataboutery'. User37482 has referred to the horrors happening in Sudan, for instance.

What was striking about coverage of the October 7th massacres was the extent to which the sexual violence against women was either downplayed or entirely denied. 'Even' the UN ignored it as an issue for so long that the disregard and disrespect for the women victims and survivors was blatant.

I would add that not only is the use of sexual violence against women on Oct 7th denied in some quarters, I have seen online comments in the past couple of weeks denying that the Oct 7th massacres ever took place at all.

It's ironic to accuse this board of ignoring rape in war and armed conflicts, and then complaining when an example of it is mentioned. You either want it discussed, or you don't Blurrywateryeye.

it’s very true. And people also denied (and still do) The Holocaust

We had similar on threads on.this board discussing it before. But also some very thoughtful and insightful posts, some from people with family in the area who'd been affected.

Jesus christ, have a look at yourself, would you say that about Sudanese women who are currently being brutalised.

Blurrywateryeye · 09/07/2025 00:52

I think I’ve been clear on my point. Why is this only an issue now?

It's been an issue since Oct 7th 2023, it's just those Leftist's who are hard of hearing, have refused to acknowledge the atrocity that happened on that day. It doesn't fit their narrative of being Hamas 'victim's' you see.

Why are you objecting to it being raised now, does it inconvenience your narrative as well?

Shortshriftandlethal · 09/07/2025 08:18

The problem for some in even mentioning the sexual violence and mutilation that occured on October 7th - is that acknowledging it in an honset way would create too much cognitive dissonance, of the sort that would disrupt the ongoing campaign of villification of a whole population.

Blurrywateryeye · 09/07/2025 00:52

It isn't. It was a major 'issue' at the time and the graphic and appallling nature of it is what led to the ongoing situation in Gaza; yet many didn't want to acknowledege that in an honest or open way.

ArabellaScott · 09/07/2025 08:11

IwantToRetire · 09/07/2025 01:54

I think most of us on FWR and other feminist discussions are aware of the fact that women and children are the victims of sexual violence in war (and natural catastrophies).

And that includes UK soldiers.

What happened after the attack on 7 October (and I am sure this happens elsewhere) those tasked with dealing the horrors were not and did not look at what they say from a VAW perspective.

But within I think 24 hours or so, a group of Israeli feminists, some active in rape crisis support work' got together and went to as many of the scenes of violence and recorded what they saw and what it indicated about sexual violence.

This was published in full in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz but was not considered an "official" report. There was a thread based on the article on FWR.

At some later date UN representatives asked to make a full investigation but were refused permision by the Israeli Government to come to Israel to carry out an investigation.

So because the UN hadn't done their own report, and the only existing one at that time was the voluteer feminist one, there was no "official" comment from the UN. This is what led to the endless newspaper reporting about how no women's groups had condemned Hamas. (Not forgetting all the other areas of the world where women and being subjected to sexual violence in war zones, but nobody cares because they are in Africa or Asia.)

As far as I know this recent article is not the actual report but a long extract published in the Times last saturday https://www.thetimes.com/article/2e4199e3-ef9f-43d6-91c7-353cc731e203 ( https://archive.is/Q8yQe )

And if this report makes a difference to how the men in charge on both or how ever many sides in an area of armed conflict respond to acts of sexual violence against women, that would be a break through.

But some of you might remember there was a summit in London under the joint auspices of Angelina Jolie and William Hague that was attended by representative of any number of governments all swearing and signing up to ending these acts of violence. Sadly, if anything, it seems to have got worse. Or maybe there are more areas on violence in the world.

(I've found a link. This international committment was 11 years ago. https://www.reuters.com/article/world/africa/angelina-jolie-uks-hague-vow-action-against-sexual-violence-in-war-idUSKBN0EL0PX/ )

Edited

Thanks for that. The silence on the subject afterwards was astonishing. Especially from the UN.

Do calm down. Calling out hypocritical behaviour is hardly misogynist. What about all the women and children this happened to before October 7th? Why is no one advocating for them?

'Whataboutery' has no purpose, I suggest, other than to deflect.

Probably because it was widely denied at the time...and not even reported on by much of the mainstream media.

I don't think that sexual violence has been ignored, or certainly dismissed in other situations; certainly not here.

Delphin · 09/07/2025 07:55

"Why all of a sudden are we taking notice just because Hamas committed the atrocious act?"

Because Hamas livestreamed and posted all over the Internet for the world to see? They've tried to delete and deny, but the world has kept copies.
Men from these videos have been identified.
Women have always been taking notice, it's only men who ignore or deny or deflect (I wonder why?).

I am living in a peaceful country, born long after the last war, and even I know two(!) women who were raped in war or the child of a rape (both 2nd WW). It was never an issue until about 25 years ago or so, when the first books about it were published. Good on the Israeli women for not being quiet, and for not letting themselves being shut up by the men (in their own government, fgs!).

Its not. This board frequently has discussions on this topic, both the Oct attacks and others.
One of the many things that horrifies me about these particular attacks is how we immediately get people like you trying to minimise and challenge us for taking about them, despite the fact that this was one of the most brutal mass sexual attack on women in recent history.
Your trying to shut that discussion down shows just how far we have to go in raising awareness on the topic, and thst we need to talk about this more not less.

On what date should everyone have taken notice? And are the people who failed to take notice on this arbitrary date barred from doing so at any point in the future? What if you weren't born when an atrocity happened? Does that mean you may never notice it at any point? You claim to be calling out hypocrisy but that isn't what you're doing at all, is it?

Sexual violence is a huge problem in warfare, but the perpretators don't usually film themselves committing these atricioties, as some Hamas members did on 7 October.

The response of the Israeli army to the attack does not negate the appalling violence carried out that day.

Nobody says it it does.

And the idea that filming, or photos haven't happened elsewhere in situations which were are least as bad if not worse, is just not credible.

Every time someone tries to make out that this was somehow exceptionally worse than elsewhere is just not useful.

Nor is using the word genocidal.

As if in other parts of the world an element of ethnic cleansing or "genocide" doesn't happen. All this does is feed into what has already happened making this atrocity a political football, rather than acknowledging that sadly this is happening in many countries to women and children.

Sadly implying that other women aren't important.
