Pronouns in work signatures- how do I stop it?

My employer has just mentioned they want people to start putting pronouns in email signatures. They have said it isn't mandatory. My question is, should I contact management to explain why this isn't a good idea, and if so, what sources can I provide?
Thanks all

I work in a captured unit and some people put pronouns in signatures etc. Nothing has been said about it by HR but I'm sure post Peggie and also Linzi, HR depts across the land will move to more neutral ground - especially as the legal landscape is becoming clarified and it's going to become so darned expensive to get it wrong.

There are job cuts where I am so I'm lie low Lil as I need my job.

Dandelionsand4leafclover · 17/07/2025 10:34

If its not mandatory, which of course it shouldn't be, just choose to do what you want ie if they hadn't sent the email what would you do? If they follow it up then you can explain that in your view it isn't necessary etc. Most people where I work don't bother and haven't been asked about it.

Abhannmor · 17/07/2025 09:59

Ask if your pronouns can be Allahu Akbar.

I'll just get me coat ....

anyolddinosaur · 17/07/2025 09:30

The Linzi Smith v Northumbria Police judgement could be quoted. If you embrace pronouns in emails you are possibly creating an environment which is perceived to be hostile to those with sex realist beliefs. If your employer has any sort of duty of impartiality this could be seen as demonstrating bias, certainly if it was ever made mandatory.

I think it's interesting that in the Sandy Peggie employment tribunal the fact that IB's email signature included "LGBT ally", was noted by NC. The broader point NC is certain to be make is that TWs' desire to access women's sss's competes with women's rights, and that stating you're an "LGBT ally" (without so much as mentioning women or any other protected characteristic) implies that you're not impartial when adjudicating those rights in an organization and that puts the organization as a whole at risk to exactly the type of lawsuit NHS Fife finds itself in.

There's a difference between having "LGBT ally" in you signature and having pronouns since it could be argued that pronouns have some functional justification. But I don't think it's correct to think they are neutral. They obviously signal you subscribe to a very particular (and oftentimes activist) ideology. In this respect their inappropriateness is amplified when they are optional since it signals that people with GC beliefs (those without pronouns) shouldn't expect impartial treatment from those that do have them.

BezMills · 17/07/2025 06:31

Yeah there are a few he/himmers in my organisation. Basically almost all the grads/new-in-career kids, and some of the key players higher up in HR and UK country leadership.

I won't be joining them, my gender identity has nothing at all to do with work, and I'm keeping it to myself.

FWIW I use my abbreviated name at work, always have done - it's in my email address and every single other work identifier. Almost nobody knows that my real name is quite a bit longer.

My husband works for a big company and he's received a few emails saying something similar, he's just ignored them all.

SerendipityJane · 16/07/2025 17:06

What are the issues around having a different name for work than outside work (I find myself wondering). You might be "Jane Doe" in everyday life, but when you get to your desk you become "John Doe" for the purposes of work ?

If you can choose your pronouns then why not chose your name instead ?

(This is merely refining existing practices where some customer facing staff get assigned fake names for their own safety anyway).

If you fight wire with fire, you fight bollocks with bollocks surely ?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/07/2025 17:03

We had an email/stuff on the intranet about this the other week - my workplace is 100% captured, but it also said it wasn’t mandatory. I put “Ms” before my name on mine and no pronouns.

I have a colleague (a gay man) who says everyone should be referred to as “they” unless they tell you otherwise. 😬

If you really believe that using pronouns spontaneously in everyday language is the same as "declaring" YOUR pronouns, then I don't know how to help you.

Luckily others here do.

Really? I call bollocks.

I have a name that confuses people: feminine in my parents' mother tongue, obscure or possibly masculine in English. Yes, people were often confused when meeting me in person or on the phone, having assumed from written communication that I was a man. Never caused me any problems.

I later realised that people assuming me to be male gave me gravitas (in their heads!) and I was taken more seriously. It was much easier to establish myself with new contacts when I signed off as Jelly Saurus than when I signed off as Jelly Saurus (Ms), or as Jelly Saurus (Miss).

Me too! I work in a profession where especially Americans think I’m a man until they talk to me. Fabulous. I can throw my masculine weight around and don’t have to “be kind”.

It's one woman who has an issue with something that has no impact on her whatsoever. If everyone chooses to ignore this and not put their pronouns in their signatures then nothing changes. If many people do, then that's how culture change works in an organisation, and maybe OP's opinion isn't as widely shared as she assumed! Demanding that HR does what SHE thinks is right will get her nowhere.

My view on women is the same as NATO.

An attack on one is an attack on all.

SloppyThePoodle · 16/07/2025 13:28

MrsSunshine2b · 16/07/2025 11:20

Mind your own business. It's not up to you to tell other people they can't use pronouns in their email address or dictate the culture of your workplace.

My main issue is that I was thinking of perhaps telling HR why it might not be a good idea, not that I want to tell people what they can and can't do. For example, I don't want it to become some kind of virtue signal and anyone with no pronouns in their signature becomes a target. Or vice versa.

I've already posted about why I care, if you look through my posts you'll see my reasoning.

Hi op. With respect I wasn’t directing the question to you but to the poster I quoted who was dismissing the issue entirely and IMHO trying to brush the issue aside as not being important. Similar to the “why do you care” question.

Apologies - I think i quoted you by mistake!

Your post has at least 8 pronouns in it. What’s your problem?

RobinEllacotStrike · 08/07/2025 13:56

to add - pronouns don't tell you if some is male or female.

It tells you how someone feels about their own internal sense of "gender identity". Frankly I have zero interest in this. Its like knowing someones fave M&M colour.

I do not care.

You don’t know what pronouns are. There’s 111 in British Grammar and they are nothing to do with how people feel!!

….and just like that we have a prime example.

it’s highly likely that there is more than just OP who objects to this.

and it absolutely does matter and does have an impact on her.

Don't- ive already explained why I don't agree with it but people appear to not be reading the full thread before asking this question again and again!!

thats right women, just STFU & leave it to the transwomen & handmaidens to do all the dictating of what is acceptable "workplace culture"

Quite right too. What business is it of the staff what their workplace culture is ? They should just do their fucking jobs.
