My DD hates that I’m a TERF!

TheLizardQueen · 18/06/2025 20:59

My teenage DD says she is embarrassed of my GC views. I’ve tried to educate her on women’s spaces, women’s sports etc but she doesn’t agree with me and says I embarrass her with my views and not to expect her to want to spend time with me when she leaves home. I’m gutted but she will not change my mind. I’ve told her that my views are that a person cannot change sex but she has some trans friends and thinks that I hate trans people. I absolutely do not hate trans people but I do not think that TWAW and as such shouldn’t be welcome in women’s only spaces. Please help me navigate this. I fear that she will hate me because of my views but I cannot accept her views but I don’t want her to be embarrassed of me either 😕

My kind, loving (autistic) 17 ds is also dismayed by my Terfism, I think this is a good thing. I think it is worrying that their generation believe that every good person has to think and feel exactly the same about every subject and anyone who veers even slightly away from this mindset must be unspeakably evil. I tell him that our different sex, generation, cultural reference and life experiences mean it is inevitable we will sometimes have different viewpoints. I think his confusion and discomfort that someone he loves and respects is embracing an unthinkable position and yet somehow managing not to also be torturing small children and kittens is forcing him to question this rigid cult thinking a little. We mostly don't discuss our differing opinions on this, but I make sure he knows my views and I don't actively try to change his, even though this is a very important subject to me. Learning to respect and accept other people's views kind of cuts both ways. I am optimistic that this might be a first step to him not blindly accepting the 'approved list of good person viewpoints' and thinking more for himself.

You sound like an excellent parent. 🩷

MyQuirkyTraybake · 18/06/2025 23:52

I'd tell her to arm wrestle all her friends. Some things must be shown, not told, including reality.

BuckaDuck · 18/06/2025 23:51

That's the issue right there. People are born different. Science proves this

Proves what?
Born different how?
Since when has science proven males are born female?
Stop spouting crap and explain yourself like a grown up ffs.

Your language, "dodgy rainbow families" is just hateful.

utter pish. Is there a shift system working this week on MN. So much hyperbolic bullshit being spouted.

The Jeffrey March tactic of encouraging children to cut off their families is what is hateful and totally dodgy.

Most young people identifying as trans these days are girls and young women who are same sex attracted, or neurodivergent, or survivors of abuse, or a combination of those things.

It's not hard to see why they want to opt out of womanhood, but affirming them in their belief that taking testosterone and cutting their breasts off will fix their problems is just evil.

Why is that wrong? To pick one aspect of your statement:
Studies suggest ND people are more introspective and therefore more in tune with their feelings.

I believe that there are, and always have been, more trans people that thought previously and it is just that society is more open to people expressing themselves as who they are and so they're doing that.

Another reaponse showing an inability and unwillingness to let others have different opinions. And they're different so you mock them. 🤦‍♀️

we are talking about facts, not opinion.

Some opinions however, do not deserve respect; flat-earthers for example.

Gender is regressive bullshit. Sex is our material reality and is immutable.

Have you told her this OP? Maybe it would be helpful to have a conversation directly with her about how both of you can navigate situations where your views differ.

Funnily enough, my 3 year old called "daddy" yesterday and that was my new name. 🤷‍♀️😂

So does that make you the father now and not the mother?

Mocking is bullying. Doesn't help your cause and just shows you as intolerant. It's common behaviour, though.

I personally feel bullied by those who persist on enforcing lies and harmful ideology upon me.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/06/2025 23:18

What’s a “mum”? How do you tell which you are? Are you sure you’re not actually a dad?

Is it an option just to agree to disagree? Not only is she at an age when anything your parents say is a) wrong and b) terribly embarrassing, but it's an age where it's so easy to be idealistic. I can remember lecturing one of my teachers about the need to save whales (I'm not sure how she kept a straight face Grin ) and I cringe now at how bloody sanctimonious I could be!

But there was an urgent need to save whales, so although I see what you mean, it's not quite analogous.

They cut off their real families because they've been manipulated by their new and not at all dodgy rainbow families on the internet.

Really? Did you read Screamingabdabz's post at 21:48? And you wonder why transkids cut off their families?

Will do. Good night to you.

justasking111 · 18/06/2025 23:25

OH I wouldn't discuss it. Teenagers are such drama llamas. She's entitled to her opinion. Keep yours on the down low.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 18/06/2025 23:20

We aren't the ones ending friendships and going no contact with family members for having a different opinion. That would be the "be kind" lot.

I’d start with the religion analogy. Some people believe TWAW. some people are gender critical. Some people believe Jesus is the son of god. Others don’t. We live in a pluralistic and tolerant society where different people with different beliefs can still be friends. So ask if she can be friends with someone with different beliefs. And if not, why not?

give her time and space to think, don’t expect to change her mind. Just listen and work towards a state where you agree to disagree.

later as she gets older, she may move closer to your point of view.

I think this is a great approach and I use it with my kids and other adults who are full on genderists.
You choose to believe in a particular religion/ god / gender / whatever and I don’t share that view but that’s fine - we can respect each others right to hold different opinions and diversity of thought is a valuable thing. I don’t compromise on facts tho - tell me sex is a spectrum and I will tell you it’s bollocks!

AuntMarch · 18/06/2025 23:21

Screamingabdabz · 18/06/2025 21:48

I would absolutely rip the piss out of them. Then watch them try to pay for their own uni education without my support. Not happening. Suck it up buttercup. People can’t change sex.

That'll save the relationship 🙄
