Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Reflections on Trans Arguments

I've noticed a lot of general discourse about trans people that is based on misinformation, some of it dangerous, most of it born out of ignorance, so here's a handy reference to counter some of the claims I've seen.

Trans People are extremist! That's wot I done heard!
Transgender extremism doesn't exist - it's just a right-wing talking point used to discredit legitimate healthcare and equality efforts.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/02/gender-critical-beliefs-under-the-microscope

Puberty Blockers are Dangerous! My total lack of medical knowledge says so!
Puberty blockers are often lifesaving interventions. They're prescribed only after long assessments involving NHS gender clinics, parents, and specialists. They are fully reversible and shown to reduce the risk of suicide in young people with persistent gender dysphoria.

I Heard They're Changing Kids' Genitalia!
No people under 18 are getting genital surgery in the UK. NHS policy and private clinics alike restrict this to adults.
Indeed, more cisgender teens receive breast reduction surgery on the NHS than trans teens receive chest masculinisation surgery. The procedures follow similar approval processes, yet only one group is routinely scrutinised.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02/10/revealed-thousands-of-trans-surgeries-carried-out-by-nhs/

They're in Women's Sports! I read it on teh internets!
There are only a small number of openly trans athletes competing at a professional level in the world, and none are dominating their fields.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/61346517
https://feeds.bbci.co.uk/sport/athletics/65051900

But, but, but, Women's Sports! No men!
Sex-segregated sports were historically introduced to exclude women, not because men were being beaten. The idea that it was about fairness is a myth.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jun/13/how-the-fa-banned-womens-football-in-1921-and-tried-to-justify-it
https://research.birmingham.ac.uk/en/publications/health-gender-and-inequality-in-sport-a-historical-perspective

Ok, but Trans-women are Stronger. That ain't Fair!
There is no consistent biological advantage for trans women in elite sport. Oestrogen therapy significantly reduces muscle mass, strength and performance over time. Regulations often require minimum hormone levels and transition periods before competing.
https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/55/15/865
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/59312313

Trans-Women are Men!!!!!! Any fule knowe that!
Identity is personal. “Man”, “woman”, “boy”, and “girl” are social roles - that’s gender. Not to be confused with biological sex - male and female. No trans woman claims to be biologically female, and no trans man claims to be biologically male. That’s another right-wing straw man argument.

https://www.stonewall.org.uk/resources/lgbtq-hubs/trans-hub/the-truth-about-trans

Trans History is Different to Women's History
The idea that trans women have a “separate history” to cis women echoes the same tactics once used to exclude Black women and disabled women from womanhood.
https://blog.bham.ac.uk/socialsciencesbirmingham/2024/03/08/international-womens-day-trans-women-cannot-be-left-behind/
https://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/news/trans-and-disability-justice-how-are-our-struggles-linked
Tall women, Black women, trans women - these are all adjectives describing different types of women. Every woman’s experience of womanhood is unique. If you exclude trans women from being women, what condition are you using to define womanhood? There isn’t one necessary condition. So trans women cannot be excluded from womanhood on this basis.

Trans-Women are Men in Dresses! I read it in the Daily Mail!
Crossdressing is not the same as being trans. Many cis men crossdress and are not trans.
https://fiorry.co/glossary/crossdresser/

But Anybody can be Trans in an Instant! I'm scared!
The risk of coming out as trans due to internalised homophobia and sexism is a real thing but is not as common as many would have you believe. That’s why the NHS has a structured care pathway with long waiting times and assessments. No one can simply walk in and access hormones or surgery. Many people are left in limbo for years unless they are in crisis or suicidal.
https://www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/referral-pathway-for-children-and-young-peoples-gender-services-community-and-hospital-paediatric-services/
https://transactual.org.uk/trans-lives-21/

Organisations are Convincing Kids They're Trans! Think of the Children!
No one is trying to “convince” people they’re trans. If you feel deep discomfort with the sex you were assigned at birth, you might be trans - but that’s for you to explore, not for anyone else to decide. The queer community is generally very good at spotting people who are dealing with internalised issues - no one wants anyone to transition unless it’s truly needed. This whole “kids being convinced” thing is another empty scare story.
https://transactual.org.uk/healthcare-professionals/inclusive-healthcare/
https://www.england.nhs.uk/long-read/referral-pathway-for-children-and-young-peoples-gender-services-community-and-hospital-paediatric-services/

Now, I'm very aware of the MN reputation for shutting down the threads - and removing the accounts - of anyone who doesn't go along with the anti-trans-hate-cult, but for the short time this thread remains up it's worth taking some time to actually look at the links, to think about the status of trans-women in the current society, and consider how this judgement - and the subsequent interpretation of the same by those who are a little hard of thinking - might reflect on us as self-assumed rational, reasonable human beings.

It's not possible to be feminist and prioritise the wants of penis people over the needs of vagina people, which is what trans activists demand we do.

The truly remarkable thing about trans ideology - and once you see it, you can't unsee it - is that every single permutation and consequence of it benefits male born people and disadvantages or is at best neutral for female born people.

This applies irrespective of what anyone is identifying as or calling themselves.

The most obvious example is in sport.

Trans women have taken hormones and been allowed to compete in women's sporting categories despite still having a massive advantage over female athletes, allowing mediocre male athletes to perform well in women's categories. Meanwhile trans men have to make a choice between hormones and sport, because if they take testosterone they will be banned from all competitive sports including in men's categories, even though taking testosterone does not give them a physical advantage over men's.

Heads, the penis people win, tails, the vagina people lose.

Anyone who peddles this ideological bullshit can piss off, and if they peddle it whilst calling themselves a feminist, they can piss off some more.

Like in this case. Doesn’t look like much long term assessment went on here.

The utter cheek to come here and try to convince informed women of your arguments with “facts” that are so easily refuted it’s laughable. You tried so hard to lecture us with a pinch of condescension but bless, you just don’t seem intelligent enough for that

Awwwww!!!

I see we are all just sock puppets again for 6 feminists. Or has the number increased or decreased?

It is amazing that no matter how many polls in different countries show it, people who prioritise male people’s gender identities over female people’s needs are the majority of the population.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gish_gallop

The Gish gallop is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm an opponent by presenting an excessive number of arguments, without regard for their accuracy or strength, with a rapidity that makes it impossible for the opponent to address them in the time available. Gish galloping prioritizes the quantity of the galloper's arguments at the expense of their quality.

Strategy
During a typical Gish gallop, the galloper confronts an opponent with a rapid series of specious arguments, half-truths, misrepresentations and outright lies, making it impossible for the opponent to refute all of them within the format of the debate. Each point raised by the Gish galloper takes considerably longer to refute than to assert. The technique wastes an opponent's time and may cast doubt on the opponent's debating ability for an audience unfamiliar with the technique, especially if no independent fact-checking is involved, or if the audience has limited knowledge of the topics.
The difference in effort between making claims and refuting them is known as Brandolini's law or informally "the bullshit asymmetry principle". Another example is firehose of falsehoods.

Countering the Gish gallop
Mehdi Hasan, a British journalist, suggests using three steps to beat the Gish gallop:

  1. Because there are too many falsehoods to address, it is wise to choose one as an example. Choose the weakest, dumbest, most ludicrous argument that the galloper has presented and tear that argument to shreds ("the weak point rebuttal").
  2. Do not budge from the issue or move on until having decisively destroyed the nonsense and clearly made the counter point.
  3. Call out the strategy by name, saying: "This is a strategy called the 'Gish Gallop'—do not be fooled by the flood of nonsense you have just heard."

Generally, it is more difficult to use the Gish gallop in a structured debate than a free-form one. If a debater is familiar with an opponent who is known to use the Gish gallop, the technique may be countered by pre-empting and refuting the opponent's commonly used arguments before the opponent has an opportunity to launch into the Gish gallop.

Thanks for the real time lesson in Gish Gallop OP.

Its very effective. We were totally sucked in. Honest Gov.

Remember - this is all they've got.
If they had better, they'd throw it at us. This is literally it. The sum total of how they've arrived at their really logical and ethical, inclusive belief that just happens to include bullying women.

You can see why people like fox-botherer are capitalising on it!

Oh no, I have been assured on here by one TRa poster that they have evidence and research that a man can literally become a woman. They just won't show it to me because I'm a bigot whose mind is made up, so even scientific proof won't convince me! We're just not worthy of the good stuff!

LostInCatsFur · 19/06/2025 13:51

Ha, have you only just noticed that? 99.9% of threads are anti trans. That is not feminism, if it was there would be a range of important subjects being discussed. I take comfort from the fact that it's the same tiny amount of posters with these views, repeated day in, day out. Therefore I cannot take it seriously. It's like a cult, they all just repeat the same things ad infinitum.

Edited

Anti-trans?!

It is not possible to be anti something that can not exist. No-one can change sex, therefore no-one can transition, therefore it is not possible to be anti-trans.

This forum is full of people who are passionate about parity / fairness / equality / truth / accuracy / science / etc. It comes under feminism because the biggest set of people impacted by the trans lies told by Stonewall and others are women who have had their very existence denied and threatened. But... equally it could sit elsewhere as most of the replies are debunking inaccurate posts.

As for repeating the same thing again and again - that might be because the truth doesn't change.

Born a man - always a man
Born a woman - always a woman

It doesn't matter if you post 1,000 threads somehow expecting others to be subordinated to your theories - the facts remain the same, so continually you will get the same response... It is a little surprising considering that the same consistent response (factual, biological, legal, reality) each time doesn't make you stop and realise that it is the same because it sits there unvarnished in truth...

Or, put another way, "I found all them long words and complicated statements tricky. Plus, there was am awful lot of links to read."

Don't worry, we get it. But take heart, the nice thing about education when you're an adult is you don't have to engage with it or admit you find it challenging. You can just ignore it. Or, better still, why not make yourself feel cleverer than you are by chirruping along with what you perceive as the crowd?

Meanwhile, back over in the rational world, the number of private, positive reactions to the OP perfectly satisfy us that this thread, and the statements provided - and backed up - at the outset, have merit. 😘

What about the many posters who have read your linked sources and shared quotations from them that show you've fundamentally misunderstood - or not read - them? (Including myself).

It's no good ignoring this and just generalising in the way you do above, if you're genuinely seeking to convince us of your superior arguments and understanding. This actually has the opposite effect - of making posts like yours above appear far more applicable to yourself.
