Donate £10 to Lumos and have dinner with JKR

JKR has made a very generous offer on Twitter:

J.K. Rowling

I mean this, by the way. Donate £10 to lumos, I'll draw three names out of a hat and we'll have dinner. It could be KFC, but the wonderful JamesChiavarini has just suggested his restaurant, so it might be there instead (travel and accommodation on me if you're not in London).

Offer stands! Applications close at midnight on Monday. A £10 donation means your name will go into the draw.

https://wearelumos.org/how-you-can-help/donate/

If your name’s chosen and you’re outside London (or the UK) I’ll pay for travel and accommodation.

Once donations have been verified with Lumos I’ll select three donors’ names at random (can’t promise a literal hat, but who knows).

I’ll match the total sum donated to Lumos between first offer and midnight Monday.

And once my three fellow diners have been chosen, we’ll have a vote on whether we’re having KFC or going to Il Portico.

Additional offer from John Boyne:

John Boyne

£10 donated to Lumos. Whoever has the good fortune to win the raffle and have dinner with you, I'll donate £1,000 to the charity of his or her choosing.

This was inspired by JKR's ongoing twitter spat with Jolyon:

I've never sought to auction dinner with myself at a Michelin-starred restaurant with ‘a selection of wines from [my] own cellar’ as you have, Jolyon, but if anyone wants to bung Lumos £10, I'll draw a name out of a hat and we'll split a KFC bargain bucket.

I'll donate. But if I win then i wonder if I can send my dd. She would murder me if I went to meet jkr and didn't take her!

I can absolutely understand the urge to scoop up seemingly abandoned children and take care of them. But the amazing thing about JKR is that she looked at what happens to put the children in that position, and she is addressing the root cause. Being reunited with their families is the best possible outcome for those kids and for the people who love them.
Proud to donate to this charity. Thank you OP.

myplace · 01/06/2025 17:35

@Myalternate a charity she not only set up, but endowed so that all the running costs are covered. Every penny donated goes to help disadvantaged children.

John Boyne has got some integrity, having apologised to Glinner. I highly recommend his book The Echo Chamber, it’s a hilarious commentary on the world of woke

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/06/2025 17:26

Ahh, this would be a literal dream come true. Just donated.

It's a charity that works worldwide to try to reunite children in care with their families.

Thank you! I’ll gladly donate

God no thanks! And I love a KFC.
Good charity though.

You can still donate even if you don’t want a chance of dinner with JKR. Just do it from Tuesday onwards.

😢 I feel out of the loop…stamps feet!

I’d love the opportunity to meet JKR but I’ve no idea who/what Lumos is 🤷‍♀️

I normally donate a tenner to Lumos on her birthday, so that's just brought it forward a little.

Thanks so much for the heads up!.

Done. What an amazing offer from an amazing woman.

Glovenove · 01/06/2025 16:44

Done. Also fully expecting a sorting hat scenario.

Plasticwaste · 01/06/2025 16:40

She is such a heroine. Plays the fame game perfectly.

TheAutumnCrow · 01/06/2025 16:38

I have to rewrite my will soon.

I've donated to Lumos, and will also remember the charity in my will. I genuinely think JKR is inspirational.

I might leave Jolyon my Omron blood pressure monitor.

Thelnebriati · 01/06/2025 16:28

Unless the winning tickets are drawn from an actual sorting hat I'll be very disappointed.

wantmorenow · 01/06/2025 16:28

Donated 🥳

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 01/06/2025 15:57

i wonder how many people are torn between never donating to anything to do with JKR, but also wanting to donate over and over again so they might have a chance to explain their completely evidence based and logical beliefs

bellinisurge · 01/06/2025 15:48

Done. I’ve never had a KFC

Llamasarellovely · 01/06/2025 15:41

I have edited because I had assumed he was raising money for the GLP but actually it was for Ukraine. So whilst I still think he's a twat, on this occasion he was being slightly less twatty.

NewBinBag · 01/06/2025 15:40

Best raffle prize ever!

I was also wondering how they get the details via link pay but it doesn't really matter, it's a bit of fun for a great charity.

Thethingswedoforlove · 01/06/2025 15:26

I’ve done it too. Hope they would know how to reach me as I donated via Apple Pay!
